This book is an imaginative exploration of a place that has fascinated, intrigued and perplexed visitors for centuries. Instead of seeing Stonehenge as an isolated site, the author sets the stones within a wider landscape and explores how use and meaning have changed from prehistoric times right through to the present. Throughout the millennia, the Stonehenge landscape has been used and re-used, invested with new meanings, and has given rise to myths and stories. The author creatively explores how the landscape has been appropriated and contested, and invokes the debates and experiences of people who have very different and often conflicting experiences of the same place. Today, heritage managers, archaeologists, local people, free festivallers, and druids come to the place with entirely different understandings and agendas. The book demonstrates that the creation of spaces and places for people to express divergent viewpoints is powerfully constrained by social and political forces that allow some voices to be heard while others are marginalized. With dialogues and illustrations that range from the conventional to the cartoon strip, this multi-vocal book not only presents a wide range of views in an innovative way, but provides important new insights on how people shape and are shaped by landscape.
The causewayed enclosures of the neolithic era were the first monumental structures in the British Isles. But the uses to which these vast concentric rings of raised walkways were put remains confused. Archaeological evidence suggests that these sites had many different, and often contradictory functions, and there may have been other uses for which no evidence survives. How can archaeologists present an effective interpretation, with the consciousness that both their own subjectivity, and the variety of conflicting views will determine their approach. Because these sites have become a focus for so much controversy, the problem of presenting them to the public assumes a critical importance. The authors raise central issues which occur in all archaeological interpretation, especially in sites that have been put to a variety of uses over time. The authors have not tried to provide a comprehensive review of the archaeology of all these causewayed sites in Britain, but rather to use them as case studies in the development of an arcaheological interpretation. These techniques and approaches can be applied to sites of many periods.

Landscapes are not just backdrops to human action; people make them
and are made by them. How people understand and engage with their
material world depends upon particularities of time and place.
These understandings are dynamic, variable, contradictory and
open-ended. Landscapes are thus always evolving and are often
volatile and contested. They are also always on the move - people
may or may not be rooted, but they have 'legs'. From prehistoric
times onwards people have travelled, but the process of
people-on-the-move - as tourists, or on global business, as migrant
workers or political or economic refugees - has vastly accelerated.
The term 'landscape' was coined in an emergent capitalist world to evoke a particular set of elite experiences - a particular 'way of seeing'. But other people also have landscapes. The authors of this book are Geographers, Anthropologists and Archaeologists, and they explore landscape as something subjective, something experienced, something that alters through time and space, that is created by, and creative of, historical conditions and geographical emplacement. The articles range in time from 6000 BC to the present, and in space from Alaska and Melanesia to Belfast and Berlin. They show how the cultural and political analysis of landscape cuts across many disciplinary boundaries and how perceptions of the land and its history are created, negotiated and contested.
