This volume contains a collection of articles on state-of-the-art developments in the construction of theoretical integral techniques and their application to specific problems in science and engineering. Chapters in this book are based on talks given at the Seventeenth International Conference on Integral Methods in Science and Engineering, held virtually in July 2022, and are written by internationally recognized researchers. This collection will be of interest to researchers in applied mathematics, physics, and mechanical, electrical, and petroleum engineering, as well as graduate students in these disciplines and other professionals for whom integration is an essential working tool.
The intersections of aging, media, and culture are under-explored given trends in population aging, rapid increases in the mediation of everyday life, and the growing cultural significance of media consumption at the global level. This book brings together an international collection of critical scholars, both well-established and up-and-coming, from the various academic disciplines that share a common interest in the future study of aging and media. This anthology of original articles integrates aging theory and media studies through a study of core issues including the media's influence on the construction of "old age," the reciprocal influence of aging on media industries, age-based identities in a mediated world, issues of gender and sexuality in an aging society, and the practical implications of a more integrated approach between the two fields. The chapters explore the intersections between aging and media in the realms of advertising/marketing, television, film, music, celebrity and social media, among others.
One of the main ideas in organizing the Summer Institute of Cargese on "Bifurcation Phenomena in Mathematical Physics and Related Topics" was to bring together Physicists and Mathematicians working on the properties arising from the non linearity of the phenomena and of the models that are used for their description. Among these properties the existence of bifurcations is one of the most interesting, and we had a general survey of the mathematical tools used in this field. This survey was done by M. Crandall and P. Rabinowitz and the notes enclosed in these proceedings were written by E. Buzano a]ld C. Canuto. Another mathematical approach, using Morse Theory was given by J. Smoller reporting on a joint work with C. Conley. An example of a direct application was given by M. Ghil. For physicists the theory of bifurcation is closely related to critical phenomena and this was explained in a series of talks given by J.P. Eckmann, G. Baker and M. Fisher. Some related ideas can be found in the talk given by T. T. Wu , on a joint work with Barry Mc Coy on quantum field theory. The description of these phenomena leads to the use of Pade approximants (it is explained for instance in the lectures of J. Nuttall) and then to some problems in drop hot moment problems. (cf. the lecture of D. Bessis).

The purpose of this book is to review our state of knowledge about the neurobehavioral and psychosocial processes involved in behavioral inhibitory processes and to provide an insight into how these basic research findings may be translated into the practice of drug abuse prevention interventions. Over the last decade, there has been a wealth of information indicating that substance use disorders do not simply reflect an exaggeration of reward seeking behavior, but that they also represent a dysfunction of behavioral inhibitory processes that are critical in exercising self-control. A number of studies have determined that individuals with substance use disorders have poor inhibitory control compared to non-abusing individuals. In addition, the fact that the adolescent period is often characterized by a lack of inhibitory control may be one important reason for the heightened vulnerability for the initiation of drug use during this time. Controlled experiments utilizing neuroscience techniques in laboratory animals or neuroimaging techniques in humans have revealed that individual differences in prefrontal cortical regions may underlie, at least in part, these differences in inhibitory control. Although a few excellent journal reviews have been published on the role of inhibitory deficits in drug abuse, there has been relatively little attention paid to the potential applications of this work for drug abuse prevention. The current book will provide both basic and applied researchers with an overview of this important health-relevant topic. Since translational research cuts across multiple disciplines and most readers are not familiar with all of these disciplines, the reading level will be geared to be accessible to graduate students, as well as to faculty and researchers in the field. The book will be organized around three general themes, encased
within introductory and concluding chapters. The first theme will
review basic neurobehavioral research findings on inhibition and
drug abuse. Chapters in this theme will emphasize laboratory
studies using human volunteers or laboratory animals that document
the latest research implicating a relation between inhibition and
drug abuse at both the neural and behavioral levels of analysis.
The second theme will move the topic to at-risk populations that
have impulse control problems, including children, adolescents and
young adults. The third theme will concentrate on prevention
science as it relates to inhibitory control. Chapters in this theme
will be written by experts attempting to develop and improve
prevention interventions by integrating evidence-based knowledge
about inhibitory control processes. In all of the chapters, writers
will be asked to speculate about innovative approaches that may be
useful for the practice of prevention.
Unlike many of the works on the Yugoslav wars written during and just after the crisis, Yugoslavia Unraveled delves beyond 'who did what to whom' to examine underlying issues regarding the sources of religious nationalism and inter-ethnic conflict, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states, and the principle of self-determination and the right of secession from an existing state. This volume raises essential questions pertaining to the legality and morality of military intervention by external powers without U.N. sanction, and to nation-building by outside powers in war-devastated territories. The book also explores the nature of media propaganda in times of war. Editor Raju G. C. Thomas and the prominent contributors provide fresh views and alternative explanations for the unraveling of a sovereign independent state following the end of the Cold War and in a world without countervailing power.
