Spiritual Capital seeks to re-focus discussion on core social
values, on individuals' value systems and the internal dynamics
that impel human beings to live by truth, goodness and love. This
book defines, refines and disseminates the concept of spiritual
capital. Contributions by practitioner-scholars in applied
spirituality, who have practical experience of spiritual capital at
work in diverse human situations, provide accounts of concrete
expressions of spiritual capital and create an interdisciplinary
discussion between spirituality practitioners, artists, ecologists,
sociologists and others on the frontiers of change in contemporary
culture.
Increasingly, it is being recognized that spirituality, defined
here as "a multiform search for a transcendent meaning of life that
connects them to all living beings and brings them in touch with
God or 'Ultimate Reality,'" is an aspect of almost every sphere and
aspect of social life. It appears in humanity's dealings with
nature, home and community, healing, economics and business,
knowledge, and education. The Routledge International Handbook of
Spirituality in Society and the Professions is a stimulating
collection that summarizes the most important issues, frameworks,
discussions, and problems relating to spiritually inspired
activities in different fields of social life. The contributors
explore how spirituality is a part of existence and present
approaches and models for professionals working in diverse areas.
Presented in seven parts, the book provides a full overview of
current research and practice. Part II, "Facets of spirituality,"
explores topics including philosophy, psychology, theology, and
culture. Part III, "Nature," looks at ecology, agriculture, cities,
and tourism. Part IV, "Home and community," presents chapters on
various life stages, disability, gender, and culture. Part V,
"Healing," examines medicine, mental and physical health, and
ill-health. In Part VI, "Economy, politics, and law," contributors
discuss business, leadership and the workplace, peace, and
policing. Part VII, "Knowledge and education," includes chapters on
science, design, fashion, literature, and the arts. In the final
part, "Way forward," the editors look to the future with a chapter
on inter-spirituality and the renewal of social practices. Driven
by contemporary research and new developments, this Handbook is an
innovative and interdisciplinary collection that provides an
essential overview of contemporary spirituality and society from an
international selection of contributors. The Routledge
International Handbook of Spirituality in Society and the
Professions offers accessible, diverse, and engaging international
research, and its scope will appeal to academics and students of a
wide range of subjects, including aging and addiction, psychology,
theology, religious studies, sociology, business studies, and
philosophy. It will also be an important work for professionals in
medical and social services, the clergy, education, business, the
arts, religious communities, and politics, and members of
organizations looking at the links between spirituality, religion,
and society.

From a Church that once enjoyed devotional loyalty, political
influence, and institutional power unrivaled in Europe, the
Catholic Church in Ireland now faces collapse. Devastated by a
series of reports on clerical sexual abuse, challenged publicly
during several political battles, and painfully aware of plunging
Mass attendance, the Irish Church today is confronted with the loss
of its institutional legitimacy. This study is the first
international and interdisciplinary attempt to consider the scope
of the problem, analyze issues that are crucial to the Irish
context, and identify signs of both resilience and renewal. In
addition to an overview of the current status and future directions
of Irish Catholicism, The Catholic Church in Ireland Today examines
specific issues such as growing secularism, the changing image of
Irish bishops, generational divides, Catholic migrants to Ireland,
the abuse crisis and responses in Ireland and the United States,
Irish missionaries, the political role of Irish priests, the 2012
Dublin Eucharistic Congress, and contemplative strands in Irish
identity. This book identifies the key issues that students of
Irish society and others interested in Catholic culture must
examine in order to understand the changing roles of religion in
the contemporary world.

As we celebrate the tercentenary of Nano Nagle's birth in 2018,
this timely publication considers the untold contribution made by
the founders of the Presentation Sisters to the field of social
justice in Ireland and abroad, and also provides a fascinating
exploration of her enduring legacy for Christians today. The
editors have invited leading scholars and theologians to engage
with various pertinent facets of Nagle's life and the resulting
essays offer a rich insight into the social milieu in which Nano
Nagle was born, her pioneering role as a champion of Catholic
education and the formative years of the Presentation Sisters; the
book also highlights how the charism of the congregation's early
members has remained a defining characteristic of their mission
today. Nano Nagle and an Evolving Charism also analyses the vision
of the Presentation Sisters, the order's immeasurable impact on the
lives of the impoverished both at home and overseas, and the great
example their mission offers to educators, leaders and
care-providers across the globe in the twenty-first century.
