Sam Stone (Danny DeVito) is a hard-nosed, highly obnoxious money
man whose wife Barbara (Bette Midler) is kidnapped by bungling
youngsters Sandy (Helen Slater) and Ken Kessler (Judge Reinhold).
The problems arise when the kidnappers discover that their victim's
husband does not want her back.
Do You Hear What I Hear? is a delightful mixed-bag that makes for
interesting reading. It is one part the memoir of a small town
California girl who sets her sights on Broadway, and gets there.
This journey is described humorously and inspirationally. Another
part of the narrative concerns the adventures MARGE RIVINGSTON
experiences in those heady days of being in show business and being
young in New York.
There is another dimension, and that is the good solid advice the
author has for those aspirants of today who dream of the "bright
lights." As a voice coach, RIVINGSTON steps up with valuable
training methods for expanding, protecting, and projecting the
voice in the real world of eight shows a week. Not only are all the
exercises explained explicitly in the text, but the book contains a
CD for the learner to practice, imitate, and learn.
Do You Hear What I Hear? is a narrative that is a memoir, an
inspiration, a "how-to" book that is sometimes sad, serious and
often humorous-----but always interesting

The second screen adaptation of Ira Levin's best-selling novel (the
first, starring Katherine Ross, was made in 1974) is a darkly
satirical comedy, in contrast to the paranoid social critique of
the first version. Nicole Kidman stars as Joanna Eberhart, a wildly
successful New York career woman who, after suffering a nervous
breakdown, moves with her husband Walter (Matthew Broderick) from
Manhattan to the peaceful suburban community of Stepford,
Connecticut, where everything is chic, polished, and a little too
perfect for Joanna. She soon strikes up a friendship with cynical
and irreverent Jewish writer Bobbie Markowitz (Bette Midler) - and
together the two women discover the ominous secret that underpins
the social fabric of the too-good-to-be-true community in which
they find themselves.

and switched - one 'pair' go to a rich family, the other to poor
farmers. Years later, the poor twins head to New York for a
showdown with a corporation which plans to wipe out their home
town, only to find it headed by their real twin sisters. Bette
Midler and Lily Tomlin play two twins each in this zany comedy.
