This new evidence-based model, derived from a study of parents and
exemplary clinicians, offers a clear presentation of the complex
process of interaction between healthcare providers and parents of
seriously ill children. A unique aspect of the book is that it is
based on the study of excellence rather than focusing on what did
not go well. This model gives clinicians practical strategies for
optimizing interactions with parents of seriously ill children.
Moving beyond the prevalent idea of communication as a step-by-step
procedure, this book demonstrates the complex and holistic nature
of interaction in healthcare.
This book comes out of an in-depth, qualitative study of the
experiences of twenty-three families in which one parent was dying
of cancer. The study attempted to better understand the impact of
terminal illness on the entire family system and sought to develop
a theoretical framework that would guide the assessment of and
services to such families. As a result of interviews with patients,
spouses and their adult children over three phases of the study,
the process of ""fading away"" was identified and conceptualized in
terms of various phases which contributed to this process. The book
is not a research report but rather presents more generally the
ideas that developed from the study, with two purposes: to increase
the reader's understanding of particular experiences that families
encounter when dealing with terminal illness, specifically cancer.
The intended readership also includes families themselves: to
propose guidelines for care to be considered by practitioners
working with such families.
This text synthesizes, integrates, refines, and expands upon the
current information available on sibling bereavement. Exploring the
history of the study of sibling bereavement, it also covers the
immediate, short- and long-term responses and subsequent
generational effects. A chapter on caregiver implications is also
provided. Readers working with children - therapists,
psychologists, counselors, social workers, funeral directors, and
clergy - should find this book a useful resource.

When I go into a school and see behavior that needs attention, I
try to address my feelings as well as those of the students who are
affected. Rather than telling someone how to live their life, I'd
rather show in words what my experiences have led me to believe. We
all have the right to choose the path we wish to take, it's also
good to know what our options are.
This is the story of Walter Hart and his wife, Daisy. He, an
uneducated farmer and she, a lovely sophisticated scholar, grew up
in the early 1900's. They overcame tragedy and their life stories
told of a time and place that no longer exists. Their youngest
daughter, Betty, tells their story in a way that will enable you to
know them and retrace their journey. Her journey continues in their
footsteps. Interspersed with historic moments, this book gives the
reader a look into the heart of a daughter who believes this story
deserves to be shared. It culminates with a spiritual and physical
manifestation that assures the author that this story had to be
told.
The themes, words, and concepts in children's literature speak
to the whole Christian community. Virginia Thomas and Betty Miller
have examined children's literature and designed an extensive and
annotated list of children's stories, poems, folk tales, and
fiction that express faith, belief, theology, and Christian
principles. This unique resource gives churches the opportunity to
function as a united community of believers where children and
adults have the chance to study, learn, and grow together.
