Written by leading scholars in a range of disciplines (from law,
philosophy, politics and sociology to media studies and translation
studies), this book provides key insights into the globalization of
violence and the role of translation in this context, and includes
detailed empirical analyses of media representations and
translators accounts.
This is the first handbook to provide a comprehensive coverage of
the main approaches that theorize translation and globalization,
offering a wide-ranging selection of chapters dealing with
substantive areas of research. The handbook investigates the many
ways in which translation both enables globalization and is
inevitably transformed by it. Taking a genuinely interdisciplinary
approach, the authors are leading researchers drawn from the social
sciences, as well as from translation studies. The chapters cover
major areas of current interdisciplinary interest, including
climate change, migration, borders, democracy and human rights, as
well as key topics in the discipline of translation studies. This
handbook also highlights the increasing significance of translation
in the most pressing social, economic and political issues of our
time, while accounting for the new technologies and practices that
are currently deployed to cope with growing translation demands.
With five sections covering key concepts, people, culture,
economics and politics, and a substantial introduction and
conclusion, this handbook is an indispensable resource for students
and researchers of translation and globalization within translation
and interpreting studies, comparative literature, sociology, global
studies, cultural studies and related areas.
Industrial Applications of Machine Learning shows how machine
learning can be applied to address real-world problems in the
fourth industrial revolution, and provides the required knowledge
and tools to empower readers to build their own solutions based on
theory and practice. The book introduces the fourth industrial
revolution and its current impact on organizations and society. It
explores machine learning fundamentals, and includes four case
studies that address a real-world problem in the manufacturing or
logistics domains, and approaches machine learning solutions from
an application-oriented point of view. The book should be of
special interest to researchers interested in real-world industrial
problems. Features Describes the opportunities, challenges, issues,
and trends offered by the fourth industrial revolution Provides a
user-friendly introduction to machine learning with examples of
cutting-edge applications in different industrial sectors Includes
four case studies addressing real-world industrial problems solved
with machine learning techniques A dedicated website for the book
contains the datasets of the case studies for the reader's
reproduction, enabling the groundwork for future problem-solving

*This highly original book is the first to show how a consideration
of translation can expand and develop the field of sociology and
shows how translation relates to and intervenes in the most
pressing social and political issues of our times * Authored by a
specialist in both sociology and translation, this has wide appeal
across the humanities and social sciences and will be recommended
reading for courses on translation and society and within social
theory and cultural sociology *Fills a real gap in the literature
for books about how translation can inform and transform the study
of other fields and is the first in a new series of books aiming to
continue this development
Social theories of the new cosmopolitanism have called attention to
the central importance of translation, in areas such as global
democracy, human rights and social movements, but translation
studies has not engaged systematically with theories of
cosmopolitanism. In Cosmopolitanism and Translation, Esperanca
Bielsa does just that by focussing on the lived experience of the
cosmopolitan stranger, whether a traveller, migrant, refugee or
homecomer. With reference to world literature, social theory and
foreign news, she argues that this key figure of modernity has a
central relevance in the cosmopolitanism debate. In nine chapters
organised into four thematic sections, this book examines: theories
and insights on "new cosmopolitanism" methodological
cosmopolitanism translation as the experience of the foreign the
notion of cosmopolitanism as openness to others living in
translation and the question of the stranger. With detailed case
studies centred on Bolano, Adorno and Terzani and their work,
Cosmopolitanism and Translation places translation at the heart of
cosmopolitan theory and makes an essential contribution for
students and researchers of both translation studies and social
theory.

The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Media provides the first
comprehensive account of the role of translation in the media,
which has become a thriving area of research in recent decades. It
offers theoretical and methodological perspectives on translation
and media in the digital age, as well as analyses of a wide
diversity of media contexts and translation forms. Divided into
four parts with an editor introduction, the 33 chapters are written
by leading international experts and provide a critical survey of
each area with suggestions for further reading. The Handbook aims
to showcase innovative approaches and developments, bridging the
gap between currently separate disciplinary subfields and pointing
to potential synergies and broad research topics and issues. With a
broad-ranging, critical and interdisciplinary perspective, this
Handbook is an indispensable resource for all students and
researchers of translation studies, audiovisual translation,
journalism studies, film studies and media studies.

The mass media are of paramount importance in the formulation
and transmission of messages about key developments of global
significance, such as terrorism and the war in Iraq, yet the key
mediating role of translation in the reception of speeches and
addresses of figures like Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein has
remained largely invisible.
Incorporating the results of extensive fieldwork in key global
news organizations such as Reuters, Agence France Press and Inter
Press Service, this book addresses central issues relating to the
new pressures on translation arising from globalization, analyzing
new texts from major news agencies as well as alternative media
organizations. Co-written by Susan Bassnett, a leading figure in
the field of translation studies, this book presents close readings
of different English versions of key Arabic texts circulated in
Western media to demonstrate the ways in which a cultural and
religious 'Other' is framed in different media.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 15th
Conference of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence,
CAEPIA 20013, held in Madrid, Spain, in September 2013. The 27
revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 66
submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on
Constraints, search and planning, intelligent Web and information
retrieval, fuzzy systems, knowledge representation, reasoning and
logic, machine learning, multiagent systems, multidisciplinary
topics and applications, metaheuristics, uncertainty in artificial
intelligence.
