Stotty 'n' Spice Cake - Stories and traditional recipes of North East cooking (Paperback, Revised edition): Bill... Stotty 'n' Spice Cake - Stories and traditional recipes of North East cooking (Paperback, Revised edition)
Bill Griffiths
R380 Discovery Miles 3 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Stotty 'n' Spice Cake brings together regional recipes, dialect, social history and kitchen technology to give us an insight into how kitchen skills, tools and diets have developed. Bill Griffiths takes us on a journey through cooking history - from the griddle on an open fire and the 'beehive' oven to the widely used, much loved and polished kitchen range (th' yuven). This book describes the changing tastes - as well as changes in supplies of meat, fish and grain over the years to include traditions such as the popularity of oatcakes, broth and bread. Recipes from across the region, such as Leak Pudding, Carlins, Singin'-hinny, Taffle Apple, Barley Broth and wartime recipes 'Warton Pie' (Wartime Pie) of course, all served with much home grown North East humour. A joyous celebration of the history of the food and its people from the North East of England.

Three Rocks - The Story of Ernie Bushmiller: The Man Who Created Nancy: Bill Griffith Three Rocks - The Story of Ernie Bushmiller: The Man Who Created Nancy
Bill Griffith
R453 Discovery Miles 4 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From Bill Griffith, the acclaimed creator of Zippy the Pinhead, comes the story of Ernie Bushmiller and his iconic comic strip Nancy, told in an original graphic novel that recounts the history of comics and the secrets of comic book storytellingFrom Bill Griffith, creator of Zippy the Pinhead and Nobody’s Fool, comes Three Rocks, a biography of cartoonist Ernie Bushmiller, creator of the iconic comic strip Nancy. But this graphic novel is more than just the bio of a single comic book artist. It is the story of this American art form, tracing its inception in 1895 with the Yellow Kid, the creation of Nancy in 1933, and all the strips that followed, including Peanuts and The Far Side. When Bushmiller died in 1982, Nancy was running in almost 900 daily newspapers—a number few syndicated cartoonists ever achieve—and today it is experiencing a resurgence thanks to the work of new writer/artist Olivia Jaimes.Nancy is hailed as the “perfect” comic strip by fans and cartoonists alike. The title Three Rocks refers to the trope of three hemispherical rocks often seen in a Bushmiller landscape—enough to communicate environment to the reader (two wouldn’t read properly, and four is one too many). This distillation helped contribute to the iconic, diagrammatic look of Nancy, making it a comic strip not about childhood, like Peanuts, but about the nature of what it means to be a comic strip—the perfect avatar for Griffith to expand upon his philosophy of creating comics, specifically humorous comics.

With enormous enthusiasm for the language of ordinary northerners, this scenic portrait of coastal peoples combines history, etymology, and recollections to record a folk culture that strives to survive against current worldwide trends of uniformity. The examination delves deep into the boat and fishing traditions that shape this small angler community, including smuggling, the scenery, and the surrounding wildlife. The increasing threat that globalization poses to these sea populations makes this an important preservation--as well as an excellent source of factual information and reference material about those who live on the North Sea.

"Tapper's Ripple" (Paperback): Bill Griffith "Tapper's Ripple" (Paperback)
Bill Griffith
R422 Discovery Miles 4 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tapper Morre was a lucky, fairly happy person enjoying New Orleans in the late 60's. There was a lot going on, and he was having a pretty good time. However, the Vietnam War was escalating and the threat of being drafted was real. A lot of Tapper's friends had been given an all expense paid trip to Southeast Asia courtesy of the U.S. Army, Navy, or U.S. Marine Corps after they let their grades slip, or got put on suspension for one reason or another. Upon graduation from College, Tapper decided to go to Graduate School rather than be drafted. He just hadn't decided to declare war on Vietnam yet. Until they invaded South Louisiana he was going to be content to further his education. His College Advisor recommended Law School, and signed him up for the LSAT against his wishes. He had no interest in Law. It wasn't what he had planned for his future but, as luck would have it, he scored in the upper ten per cent, and along with his grades, which were pretty good, found himself in Law School at Tulane University- New Orleans, Louisiana. This was not the worse place to be at that time. There were plenty of pretty girls around, the Race Track was near to bet on horses, a card game was in the back room of a thousand bar rooms, and the food was good in and around New Orleans. This is the adventure of Tapper Morre.

Spud's Experimental Year (Paperback): Bill Griffith Spud's Experimental Year (Paperback)
Bill Griffith
R515 Discovery Miles 5 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Spud Tatum, a native of South Louisiana, was given a second chance He was physically re-engineered and endowed with World Class Speed. With this talent he traveled to Savannah, Georgia and tried out as a "walk on" Defensive Back- (Strong Side Safety) with the "Savannah Colonels" at the insistence of Dan Wells, Head Scout for the Colonels. Dan was his girlfriend's Uncle, and a chance acquaintance. Blinding speed, perfect timing and opportunity turn Spud into an NFL Star with the "upstart" Savannah Colonels, a young Expansion Team that was not expected to go far in the league. Something intangible happens to the team, and they rally around Spud to play far beyond their means. Spud makes friends, helps others, and is consumed by a young lady, "Lessy," a teenager in a wheelchair. Savannah is a great city full of real characters and the story is a rolling account of how Spud keeps his head on his shoulders by fishing, hunting, and grounding himself with friends, and a "family" he constructs from scratch Something he sorely lacked, and didn't know it.

Roman Frontier Archaeology – in Britain and Beyond - Papers in Honour of Paul Bidwell Presented on the Occasion of the 30th Annual Conference of the Arbeia Society (Paperback)
Nick Hodgson, Bill Griffiths
R1,834 Discovery Miles 18 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Roman Frontier Archaeology – in Britain and beyond gathers contributions by some 30 leading archaeologists and historians in honour of Paul Bidwell. In a wide-ranging career Paul has been one of the leading excavators and pottery specialists of his generation, admired for his ground-breaking work both in the south-west and the military north of Roman Britain. Contributions reflect the wide range of Paul Bidwell’s interests. Studies of samian pottery use, coins, carved stone pinecones, multi-piece bone dice and agricultural strategies shed light on the economy and everyday life of a Roman frontier province. For the civil southern part of the province there are studies of place-names and various aspects of the public baths of the Roman cities, as well as the impact of changing sea-levels on coastal topography. A number of contributions focus on the problems of the military north and Hadrian’s Wall, including studies of the nineteenth century antiquarian pioneers and assessments of the purpose of the Wall, the possibility of destructive attacks by an enemy, the way in which Roman forts were designed, and the use of Iron Age tradition military gear by the Roman army. The papers also take us beyond Britannia to consider developments on and beyond Rome’s Eastern, Danube and North African frontiers. The collection will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in either the civil or military aspects of Roman Britain, or the frontiers of the Roman empire. Paul Bidwell (1949-2022) Tragically Paul Bidwell died after a short illness in November 2022 soon after being presented with this book by his friends and colleagues. What was conceived as a gesture to honour Paul has become, in effect, a monument to one of the most respected Roman archaeologists of his generation, and a testament to the wide range of his archaeological interests and achievements.

The Salt Companion to Geraldine Monk (Paperback): Scott Thurston The Salt Companion to Geraldine Monk (Paperback)
Scott Thurston; Contributions by David Annwn, Sean Bonney, Chris Goode, Bill Griffiths, …
R786 R691 Discovery Miles 6 910 Save R95 (12%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This exciting volume combines the diverse talents of an impressive range of writer-critics in an engaged and lively response to the poetry of Geraldine Monk. Monk's reputation as one of the most exciting and provocative writer-performers on the British scene has been established for some time and this new collection aims to reflect critically on a prolific career which has spawned fourteen major works in the last twenty five years. The contributions within pursue several lines of enquiry beginning with considerations of the early pamphlets published in the late seventies and early eighties, the substantial works of the mid-late 80s and 90s and the major collections of the beginning of the twenty first century. Unsurprisingly what many consider as one of Monk's finest books, 1994's Interrregnum (now available in the new Salt Selected Poems) - a stunningly complex evocation of the fate of the Pendle Witches - is examined from a variety of angles concerning its poetics of difficulty, its relationship to ideas of place, nature and eco-criticism, and its politics. Other contributors look at the presence of the 'eerie' in Monk's work; the role and function of children's games throughout her oeuvre and the ways Monk engages with the visual and the sonic aspects of language. This will be the first collection of critical responses to Monk's poetry and will be a must for any reader interested in engaging with this dynamic and strenuous writer.
