Paul Deleage, a young correspondent attached to the prestigious
French newspaper Le Figaro, was sent to report on the Prince
Imperial's African adventure during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. In
fact, Deleage was the only French journalist to cover the war. His
account of the three months he spent with the British High Command,
to which Prince Louis Napoleon was seconded, was published in
French, 125 years ago. This translation from the original Trois
Mois Chez les Zoulous brings to life an extraordinary piece of
history. It provides a unique and intimate picture of the last few
months in the life of the French Prince Imperial, before his death
by an assegai spear in a lonely valley in Africa.
Written by twelve historians and two archaeologists, this history
of Natal for more than 20 years is edited by two professors of
history in the University of Natal. This book deals with a number
of myths about the colonial past and unseats the 'old' truths.
Environmental history in southern Africa has only recently come
into its own as a distinct field of historical inquiry. While
natural resources lie at the heart of all environmental history,
the field opens the door to a wide range of inquiries, several of
which are pioneered in this collection.
"South Africa's Environmental History" offers a series of local and
particular studies followed by more general commentary and
comparative studies.
