Based on case studies spanning time and geography from the Spanish
to the Nigerian civil wars, to government repression in Argentina
and genocidal policies in Guatemala and Rwanda and, finally, to
forced population removal in Australia and Israel, this collection
represents a focused attempt to come to grips with some of the
strategies used to publicly engage with traumatic memory work. The
various essays offer a kaleidoscopic perspective of new approaches
to show how such memory work contributes to transitional justice
efforts, demonstrating the complexities of achieving justice and
reconciliation through the open expression of shared memories of
violence.
Much has been written about the historic nature of the Obama
campaign. The multi-year, multi-billion dollar operation elected
the nation's first black president, raised and spent more money
than any other election effort in history, and built the most
sophisticated voter targeting technology ever before used on a
national campaign. But what is missing from these accounts is an
understanding of how Obama for America organized its formidable
army of 2.2 million volunteers - over eight times the number of
people who volunteered for democratic candidates in 2004. Unlike
previous field campaigns that drew their power from staff,
consultants, and paid canvassers, the Obama campaign's capacity
came from unpaid local citizens who took responsibility for
organizing their own neighborhoods months-and even years-in advance
of election day. In so doing, Groundbreakers argues, the campaign
enlisted citizens in the often unglamorous but necessary work of
practicing democracy. How did they organize so many volunteers to
produce so much valuable work for the campaign? This book describes
how. Hahrie Han and Elizabeth McKenna argue that the legacy of
Obama for America extends far beyond big data and micro targeting -
to a transformation of the traditional models of field campaigning.
As the first book to analyze a presidential contest from the
perspective of grassroots volunteers, Groundbreakers makes the case
that the Obama ground game was revolutionary in two regards not
captured in previous accounts. First, the campaign piloted and
scaled an alternative model of field campaigning that built the
power of a community at the same time that it organized it. Second,
the Obama campaign changed the individuals who were a part of it,
turning them into leaders. Obama the candidate might have inspired
volunteers to join the campaign, but it was the fulfilling
relationships volunteers had with other people and their deep
belief that their work mattered that kept them active. Moreover,
the lessons learned from the Obama campaign have and will continue
to transform the nature of future campaigns, in both political and
civic movements, nationally and internationally. Groundbreakers
proves that presidential campaigns are still about more than
clicks, big data and money, and that one of the most important ways
that a campaign develops its capacity is by investing in its human
resources.
Sandra Blow (1925-2006) is among the most important British artists
of the later twentieth century. During a time of rapid change in
the art world, her commitment to abstract painting resulted in a
large and diverse body of work of distinctive power and subtlety.
Michael Bird's fascinating survey of Sandra Blow's life and art is
now available for the first time in a handsome paperback edition.
Compiled in collaboration with the artist during the last years of
her life, it provides a definitive overview of her career. The book
is lavishly illustrated throughout with a fully representative
selection of Blow's work. In this highly readable account, Michael
Bird looks in depth at Blow's evolving studio practice and the
personal nature of her abstract vision. He places Blow's
achievement firmly within the wider context of British and
international art movements of the post-war period and late
twentieth century. He also casts new light on the role played in
her life by Alberto Burri and Roger Hilton, two influences she
acknowledged to be crucial to her art. Through close attention to
Blow's working methods, this book provides a unique insight into
her creative process. It reveals the intensity of emotional
engagement and technical experimentation that lie behind the
apparent spontaneity of her vivid handling of materials, colour and
form.
In The New Testament In Its World acclaimed biblical scholar N. T.
Wright draws on a lifetime of distinguished scholarship to provide
a thorough overview of the New Testament for students, church
leaders, and everyday Christians. Wright, along with prominent New
Testament scholar Michael Bird, explores the history, literature,
and theology of the New Testament with an emphasis on its relevance
for Christians today. Beginning with an overview of how to read the
New Testament, the authors then survey its historical background to
orient readers to the world of Jesus and the early church. This is
followed by an in-depth study of Jesus' inauguration of the kingdom
of God through his life, ministry, death, and resurrection. The
next section explores the life and theology of Paul, who continues
to unfold the significance of Jesus' life and ministry, and applies
these to the issues faced by the early churches. Wright and Bird
survey all of Paul's letters, providing a compact commentary on
each, while explaining contemporary scholarly discussions on Paul
and his teachings. They then turn to the gospels, written after
Paul's letters, followed by the general epistles and Revelation,
explaining the background, critical issues, important teachings,
and contemporary applications for each. This is followed by a
description of how the New Testament came to be, guiding the reader
through issues of textual criticism and canonization. A concluding
section brings all of the previous threads together to encourage
readers to consider how their personal story fits into the larger
story of God's redemption narrated in the New Testament. Students
of the New Testament will not only be equipped with all of the
technical information needed to understand the New Testament today
but will see it as one cohesive story in which they are invited to
play a vital role through their own lives and circumstances.
