R81 Discovery Miles 810 Ships in 10 - 20 working days

Seasons 3 and 4 of the perennially popular British sitcom set in a holiday camp in the late 50s/early 60s. In 'Nice People with Nice Manners', Yvonne and Barry hold a party in their chalet for the staff they consider to be 'socially acceptable'. But when Peggy mixes up the invitations, they get a few unexpected guests. In 'Carnival Time', Joe enlists Ted's help in organising a float for the town carnival. 'A Matter of Conscience' sees the staff at Maplin's attempting to thwart the local council's plans to build a new hospital right next to the camp by making as much noise as they can. In 'The Pay-Off', the council is still determined to go ahead with its plans to build the hospital, so Joe resorts to bribing the local councillors. In 'Trouble and Strife', Ted's ex-wife is demanding that he pay up his maintenance arrears. Ted has to act quickly - and cunningly - to raise the cash in time. 'Stripes' sees Joe promoting Gladys to Head Yellowcoat after a secret visit to the camp. In 'Co-Respondent's Course', Jeffrey's wife sends her new boyfriend to ask Jeffrey for a divorce. When Jeffrey is reluctant to give grounds, her boyfriend decides to try to unearth some evidence himself. 'It's a Blue World' sees Ted arranging a special late-night showing of an adult film for the male campers. In 'Eruptions', Ted retaliates after having his act rudely interrupted by a volcano in the ballroom. In 'The Society Entertainer', Spike is a changed man after falling head over heels for one of the female campers - much to the detriment of his act. Meanwhile, Jeffrey has decided that Radio Maplin would benefit from having a new voice on the airwaves. In 'Sing You Sinners', Jeffrey finds himself standing in for the local chaplain to conduct the Sunday Half Hour - with unnerving results. 'Maplin Intercontinental' sees the troupe competing for a very special prize in this year's Best Yellowcoat Competition: a transer to the new Maplin's Holiday Camp in the Bahamas. In 'All Change', Joe appoints a new supervisor for the Yellowcoats, but is less than delighted when he discovers that she insists on having a chalet all to herself at the peak of the season when the camp is filled to capacity.

This 2005 edition (ISBN 0-9743472-4-8 in the Cultural Classics Series by Ria University Press) contains an exact replica copy of the complete first edition of Robert C. W. Ettinger's 1972 cultural classic, MAN INTO SUPERMAN. Additional (2005) materials include three paper contributions: (1) "A Short History of Transhumanist Thought" (By Nick Bostrom, Ph.D.); (2) "A Brief History of Modern Transhumanism" (By R. Michael Perry, Ph.D.); and, (3) "My Dog Is A Very Good Dog -- Or -- The Unprecedented Urgency Of New Research Priorities To Dismantle Doomsday And Cultivate Transhumanity" (By Charles Tandy, Ph.D.). >>> In the 1960s Ettinger founded the cryonics (cryonic hibernation) movement and authored THE PROSPECT OF IMMORTALITY. In the 1970s Ettinger helped initiate the transhumanist revolution with his MAN INTO SUPERMAN. Ettinger sees "discontinuity in history, with mortality and humanity on one side -- on the other immortality and transhumanity." >>> Cryonic hibernation (experimental long-term suspended animation) of humans may provide a "door into summer" unlike any season previously known. Such patients (individuals and families in cryonic hibernation) may yet experience the transhuman condition. Ettinger argues for his belief in "the possibility of limitless life for our generation." We should become aware of the incorrect, distorted, and oversimplified ideas presented in the popular media about cryonics and transhumanism. Ettinger believes that the cool logic and scientific evidence he presents should lead us to forget the horror movies and urban legends and embrace great expectations. >>> An abstract of Dr. Bostrom's paper follows: Transhumanism in Western history (partial listing oftopics): Our ambivalent quest to transcend natural limits; Rational humanism as a root of transhumanism; Ben Franklin as favoring suspended animation; Darwin and possibility that most evolution remains in future; Frankenstein (1818) and science fiction; Racism and totalitarianism in the 20th century; Julian Huxley (1927) uses term "transhumanism"; Artificial Intelligence; The Singularity; Molecular Nanotechnology; Uploading of Minds; Robert Ettinger (1964) advocates experimental long-term suspended animation now (cryonics and the likelihood of transmortality and transhumanity); F. M. Esfandiary and UpWingers; Max More and the Extropy Institute; Nick Bostrom and the World Transhumanist Association; James Hughes and the new 21st century politics of biotechnology. >>> An abstract of Dr. Perry's paper follows: In 1964, Ettinger advocated freezing the newly deceased for possible future reanimation. But the transhumanist camp that emerged is not limited to cryonicists. Transhumanist thought includes (to cite only a few): Alan Harrington (1969) THE IMMORTALIST (Scientific conquest of death); F. M. Esfandiary (1970) OPTIMISM ONE (UpWing, instead of Left-Middle-Right, philosophy); Eric Drexler (1986) ENGINES OF CREATION (Molecular nanotechnology); Damien Broderick (1997) THE SPIKE (During the 21st century we will become a new family of life-forms); According to Frank Tipler (1994) THE PHYSICS OF IMMORTALITY and R. Michael Perry (2000) FOREVER FOR ALL, the more distant future may include scientific resurrection of all the dead. >>> An abstract of Dr. Tandy's paper follows: Particular cultural traditions have informed each civilization's felt educational needs to become "us" or "human" (instead ofbarbarian) or to become "educated" or "transhuman" (instead of merely human). The twentieth century surprised many of us with its world wars and doomsday weapons (WMDs). If we survive all doomsday dangers over the next few years and decades and centuries, then our future as humans or transhumans may be longer -- much longer -- than the mere 10,000 years of past civilizational existence. Our pasts are short and almost non-existent compared to the potential reality of a very long future. This paper explores the educational implications of such a complex reality.

Anthropic Bias - Observation Selection Effects in Science and Philosophy (Hardcover): Nick Bostrom Anthropic Bias - Observation Selection Effects in Science and Philosophy (Hardcover)
Nick Bostrom
R4,156 Discovery Miles 41 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book breaks new ground by drawing attention to certain kinds of biases that permeate many parts of science. Data are constrained not only by limitations of measurement instruments but also by the precondition that there is some suitably positioned observer there to 'have' the data (and to build the instruments). This simple truth turns out to have wide-ranging implications for fields as diverse as cosmology, evolution theory, imperfect recall problems in game theory, theology, traffic analysis, the foundations of thermodynamics and the interpretation of quantum mechanics.
Yet, disturbing paradoxes lie in ambush. The infamous Doomsday argument is one of these, but it is merely the tip of an iceberg. By means of thought experiments and careful philosophical investigation, the book develops a precise theory, cast in a Bayesian framework, of how to reason when our evidence has an indexical component or we suspect that observation selection effects have biased our data, the theory caters to legitimate scientific needs while showing how to resolve the philosophical paradoxes. It offers new conceptual and methodological tools for thinking about the large-scale structure of the world and the place of observers within it.

Such communications are designed to contain, in readily usable form, the information that people need to make informed decisions about risks to health, safety, and the environment. The approach draws together methods from the natural and social sciences, providing a framework for interdisciplinary collaboration. It is demostrated with varied examples including electromagnetic fields, climate change, radon, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Anthropic Bias - Observation Selection Effects in Science and Philosophy (Paperback): Nick Bostrom Anthropic Bias - Observation Selection Effects in Science and Philosophy (Paperback)
Nick Bostrom
R1,383 Discovery Miles 13 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Anthropic Bias explores how to reason when you suspect that your evidence is biased by "observation selection effects"--that is, evidence that has been filtered by the precondition that there be some suitably positioned observer to "have" the evidence. This conundrum--sometimes alluded to as "the anthropic principle," "self-locating belief," or "indexical information"--turns out to be a surprisingly perplexing and intellectually stimulating challenge, one abounding with important implications for many areas in science and philosophy. There are the philosophical thought experiments and paradoxes: the Doomsday Argument; Sleeping Beauty; the Presumptuous Philosopher; Adam & Eve; the Absent-Minded Driver; the Shooting Room. And there are the applications in contemporary science: cosmology ("How many universes are there?", "Why does the universe appear fine-tuned for life?"); evolutionary theory ("How improbable was the evolution of intelligent life on our planet?"); the problem of time's arrow ("Can it be given a thermodynamic explanation?"); quantum physics ("How can the many-worlds theory be tested?"); game-theory problems with imperfect recall ("How to model them?"); even traffic analysis ("Why is the 'next lane' faster?"). Anthropic Bias argues that the same principles are at work across all these domains. And it offers a synthesis: a mathematically explicit theory of observation selection effects that attempts to meet scientific needs while steering clear of philosophical paradox.

World War One changed the course of history. And not only on a global scale as borders shifted and battles raged, but on a local level, when sons failed to return home, and whole villages were emptied of their young men. Oxford was no exception. Many of its young scholars left the dreaming spires to become junior officers, with 170 joining the local Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry Regiment before the end of 1914. University buildings were turned from places of study into hospitals and cadet training centres. No college was left untouched. An Oxford College at War is the story of one college's experience of the war: Corpus Christi, one of the smallest and oldest Oxford colleges, lost a number of its students. Based on the moving accounts contained in the College Roll of Honour of those who fell in the Great War, this book looks not only at students' deaths, but also at the role of Corpus - as an exemplar Oxford College - in the War, and the wider role played by the University. From those fighting on the front and on the home front, to the aftermath of the War for survivors and those left behind, An Oxford College at War provides an unparalleled insight into the extraordinary bravery and everyday courage of citizens and students alike.

Arthur Bostrom; Foreword by Rick Wakeman 1
R318 Discovery Miles 3 180 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Based on a favourite character from BBC TV sitcom `Allo `Allo! In this delightful book, Officer Crabtree's masterly grasp of 'Fronch' falls under the spotlight as never before. From 'Ploose may I hov a kippy of the dooly nosepooper?' to 'frigs logs', 'scrimbled oggs' and 'fosh and chops' the book is a tribute to mangled words and phrases. Arthur Bostrom, who played Officer Crabtree on stage and screen, mixes vowels and pronunciation trying to educate those less gifted in the French 'longwodge'... For example: 'Criss chunnel fairy'... 'Which bonk do you bonk with?'... 'Would you lick a drunk?'.... Illustrated by John Cooper and ideal for travellers and fans of `Allo `Allo! alike, Good Moaning France! is a wake-up call for anyone who thinks they are competent in French (or English or any other language). Readers' questions are answered in Ask Crabtree, there are examples from Crabtree's 'poloce newtberks' and a most unhelpful 'Undex'. In a Foreword music legend Rick Wakeman recalls how he fell off his chair laughing on seeing the character created by screenwriters David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd at the start of the second series (the book is published by permission).

Celebrate the differences that make life richer and more interesting with this inclusive board book about a budding friendship. Making friends is something all children do, but sometimes it can feel scary. They might worry that no one will like them or that they are too different to find a friend. In this sweet board book, the narrator lists all the ways children can be different from a prospective friend: "I wake early. You're up late. My hair's curly. Yours is straight. I can swim, but you can skate. Will you be friends with me?" Instead of worrying that these differences will make friendship impossible, the narrator decides that: "We are different. That's okay! Life is much more fun that way." Perfect for children heading to school or any child in a new situation trying to make friends, this encouraging book reassures readers that diversity is what makes friendship--and life--so interesting.
