WELCOME TO HELL CITY, MARS Jimmy Martin has a sore head. He's used to smuggling illegal data in his headspace. But this is the first time it has started talking to him. The data claims to be a distinguished academic, author and civil rights activist. It also claims to be a bear. A bear named Honey. Jimmy has nothing against bioforms - he's one himself, albeit one engineered out of human stock - and works with them everyday in Hell City, building the future, staking mankind's claim to a new world: Mars. The problem is that humanity isn't the only entity with designs on the Red Planet. Out in the airless desert there is another presence. A novel intelligence, elusive, unknowable and potentially lethal. And Honey is here to make contact with it, whether Jimmy likes it or not.

Marguerite Guzman Bouvard
R2,496 Discovery Miles 24 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Social Justice and the Power of Compassion looks at how a single person, or a small organization, working at the grassroots level can make great strides in helping the marginalized and disenfranchised. Marguerite Guzman Bouvard weaves the personal stories of the founders and directors of such organizations as the Polaris Project, MADRE, and the Harpswell Foundation to show how they have dealt with social problems of many kinds that have been invisible for too long. From dealing with climate change to giving housing and giving medical care to the homeless these people and their organizations have created models that have been replicated around the country and successfully given widespread attention to these important issues.

Marguerite Guzman Bouvard; Contributions by Mirna E Carranza, Susan Duenke, Nancy Gerber, Trish Green, …
R2,203 Discovery Miles 22 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mothers of Adult Children elucidates what happens when children come of age and leave home, creating new lives in the realms of work and relationships. Mothers from around the world learn that this is the point in which their relationships with their children must drastically change. Mothers often come to terms with the changes by accepting differences and providing moral and emotional support when needed. However, the evolutionary nature of mothers' roles throughout the course of their children's lives is not only determined by the mother-child dynamic. The mothering of adult children is a transformative role, and the stories presented here show that the dynamics between mother and child are also influenced by cultural events. Accidents, disasters, war, and other hardships also intervene in these stories of multicultural motherhood. This book reveals the problems mothers of adult children face and celebrates the outstanding accomplishments of those who mother through hardship.

Marguerite Guzman Bouvard
R1,166 Discovery Miles 11 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Women Reshaping Human Rights, ordinary yet extraordinary women tell their stories, in their own words. Their deeds span continents and have profoundly affected millions worldwide.Readers will meet Vera Laska, who as a teenager joined the resistance against the Nazis in Czechoslovakia; Dai Qing, who fights the Communist Party's grip upon the media and government in the People's Republic of China; and Juana Beatrice Gutierrez and the Mothers of East Los Angeles, who challenge drug dealers and toxic polluters threatening their neighborhood. Professor Bouvard provides a complete biography of every activist. The stage is thus set for each individual, who recounts real-life stories of courage that sadly until now have gone unnoticed. Finally we hear the voices of those who have transformed the quest for human rights. This volume is divided into five sections: Confronting Authoritarian Governments, Struggling with Race and Ethnicity, Seeking Enviromental Justice, Upholding Women's Rights as Human Rights, and Making the World Safe for Childern.

Revolutionizing Motherhood - The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Paperback): Marguerite Guzman Bouvard Revolutionizing Motherhood - The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Paperback)
Marguerite Guzman Bouvard
R1,110 Discovery Miles 11 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Revolutionizing Motherhood examines one of the most astonishing human rights movements of recent years. During the Argentine junta's Dirty War against subversives, as tens of thousands were abducted, tortured, and disappeared, a group of women forged the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo and changed Argentine politics forever. The Mothers began in the 1970s as an informal group of working-class housewives making the rounds of prisons and military barracks in search of their disappeared children. As they realized that both state and church officials were conspiring to withhold information, they started to protest, claiming the administrative center of Argentina the Plaza de Mayo for their center stage. In this volume, Marguerite G. Bouvard traces the history of the Mothers and examines how they have transformed maternity from a passive, domestic role to one of public strength. Bouvard also gives a detailed history of contemporary Argentina, including the military's debacle in the Falklands, the fall of the junta, and the efforts of subsequent governments to reach an accord with the Mothers. Finally, she examines their current agenda and their continuing struggle to bring the murderers of their children to justice.

A comprehensive survey of the work of the legendary Swiss artist, this book illustrates and examines more than 100 of his sculptures, paintings, drawings, and prints This lavishly illustrated retrospective traces the early and midcareer development of the preeminent Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), examining the emergence of his distinct figural style through works including a series of walking men, elongated standing women, and numerous busts. Rare paintings and drawings from his formative period show the significance of landscape in Giacometti's work, while also revealing the influence of the postimpressionist painters that surrounded his father, the artist Giovanni Giacometti. Other areas of inquiry on which Alberto Giacometti casts new light are his studio practice-amply illustrated with photographs-his obsessive focus on depicting the human head, his collaborations with poets and writers, and his development of the walking man sculpture, thanks to numerous drawings, many of which have never been shown. Original essays by modern art and Giacometti specialists shed new light on era-defining sculptural masterpieces, including the Walking Man, the Nose, and the Chariot, or on key aspects of his work, such as the significance of surrealism, his drawing practice, or the question of space. Mobile Barrages and Intakes on Sediment Transporting Rivers - IAHR Monograph Series (Hardcover): M. Bouvard Mobile Barrages and Intakes on Sediment Transporting Rivers - IAHR Monograph Series (Hardcover)
M. Bouvard
R9,090 Discovery Miles 90 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rapid growth in water requirements makes it necessary to increase the amount of water drawn from rivers. The dams necessary for capturing river water have to be built to resist damage when large floods occur, and an idea of the possible destructive power of floods is given by the front photograph. The need for protection results in thick sill structures fitted with gates, and "upstream" and "downstream" cut-off walls. Sediment transported by rivers settles forming deposits behind dams, where flow velocities decrease. On the other hand, where flow velocities are high through hydraulic machinery (pums and turbines) fed from the dam, it can be necessary to remove even fine sand from the water, and also to remove floating debris. Various hydro-mechanical installations (including gates and screens) are introduced into the flow circuits to deal with sediment and debris problems.
Many emperical solutions to definition of very important details complement standard design procedures. Understanding of their use is facilitated by numerous illustrations.

A celebration of the huge linguistic diversity that is open to all of us at birth, and that has inspired and fascinated humans since the invention of speech This book opens with the first sounds a child hears in their mother's womb and their capacity for quickly learning more than one language. Hardach explores how this capacity has always been a necessary and normal aspect of human behaviour, from the earliest evidence of writing in different languages on Mesopotamian clay tablets to the role of trade in transmitting words across cultures and continents through families of multilingual merchants. She takes us into the 'book cemeteries' of medieval synagogues; describes the riddles of hieroglyphics and cuneiform, and the long struggle to decipher them; discovers the enigmatic lost language of Cypro-Minoan Britain; and reminds us, in an era of resurgent nationalism, that in the British Isles many languages have mingled in fruitful and fascinating ways. This is a book about languages and the people who love them. It is about the strange and wonderful ways in which humans have used languages since the days of the earliest clay records. About the linguistic threads that connect us all. Above all, it is about pleasure.

From Justice Department officials seizing people's homes based on mere rumors to the IRS and its master plan to prohibit the nation's self-employed from working for themselves to the perpetrators of the Waco siege, government officials are tearing the Bill of Rights to pieces. Today's citizen is now more likely than ever to violate some unknown law or regulation and be placed at the mercy of an administrator or politician hungering for publicity. Unfortunately, the only way many government agencies can measure their "public service" is by the number of citizens they harass, hinder, restrain, or jail. Already a major issue in the deliberations of the Congress that took office in January of 1995, the power and size of government is certain to be a prominent factor in the 1996 presidential elections. Lost Rights provides a highly entertaining analysis of the bloated excess of government and the plight of contemporary Americans beaten into submission by a horrible parody of the Founding Fathers' dream.

An all-inclusive panorama of the many achievements of Gustave Eiffel, one of the 19th century's most remarkable architectsGustave Eiffel was the man behind the landmark that became the symbol par excellence of Paris, and so the dominant image of France around the world. However, the work of Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) is not limited to the tower that bears his name. From 1856, when he was commissioned to design a railway bridge in Bordeaux (his first large-scale metal construction), he imposed his style all around the world. The bridge across the Douro in Portugal, the Garabit viaduct, the church in Manila, the Manaus Municipal Market in Brazil, and even the framework of the Statue of Liberty are just some of his more than 300 masterpieces. Then, disaster struck in 1892, when a report directly linked him to the Panama scandal that had come to light three years before. This was the start of a nightmare that would ultimately turn out to be completely unjustified. Deeply wounded, Eiffel withdrew, cloaking himself in his pride. His eldest daughter stuck by him, not only offering support, but also building up a remarkable collection of memorabilia and documents, a precious legacy which she left to her nephew Philippe Couperie-Eiffel. For the first time, to mark the 90th anniversary of his famous ancestor's death, Couperie-Eiffel has updated this treasure trove and offers us the chance to get to know the great architect and family man through a wide range of previously unpublished archives. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal, whose lock gates Eiffel designed and patented.

Organ-on-a-Chip: Engineered Microenvironments for Safety and Efficacy Testing contains chapters from world-leading researchers in the field of organ on a chip development and applications, with perspectives from life sciences, medicine, physiology and engineering. The book contains an overview of the field, with sections covering the major organ systems and currently available technologies, platforms and methods. As readers may also be interested in creating biochips, materials and engineering best practice, these topics are also described. Users will learn about the limitations of 2D in-vitro models and the available 3D in-vitro models (what benefits they offer and some examples). Finally, the MOC section shows how the organ on a chip technology can be adapted to improve the physiology of in-vitro models.

Social Justice at the Grass Roots (Hardcover): Marguerite Bouvard Social Justice at the Grass Roots (Hardcover)
Marguerite Bouvard
R4,255 Discovery Miles 42 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book Marguerite Bouvard explores the power of working for social justice and community building at the grass roots level. An experienced scholar of American politics, Bouvard reveals that while views may clash at the federal and state level, the local level is a very important venue, where individuals and groups can create understanding between different faiths and help marginalized people feel empowered. The leaders and founders of these groups have not worked from the top down, but reached out to people at their own level to work together for positive change. Their much needed emotional and social intelligence reveals how one person can indeed make a difference when problems seem overwhelming. American may live in a divided country, yet this book reveals how our different faiths and backgrounds are able to work together on such important issues such as climate change, promoting understanding among diverse religions, and legal and social help for undocumented immigrants. It also discusses grass roots approaches to providing health care for the poor and underserved as well as how to integrate people with disabilities as productive members of society. Two of the chapters feature young people who are working with these issues. Social Justice at the Grass Roots is meant to empower young people as well as adults and help them to understand that they can make changes that bring us together. It reveals that compassion can overcome fear and misunderstanding to celebrate our diversity and argues that a different kind of power, one based on moral values, can make it possible for heterogeneous groups to progress in solving important problems in our society.
