Adrian IV The English Pope (1154-1159) - Studies and Texts (Hardcover, New Ed): Brenda Bolton, Anne J. Duggan Adrian IV The English Pope (1154-1159) - Studies and Texts (Hardcover, New Ed)

The year 2000 witnessed the 900th anniversary of the birth of Adrian IV, the only Englishman to sit on the papal throne. His short pontificate of four and a half years, distracted by crisis and controversy and followed as it was by an 18-year schism, could be judged a low point in the history of the papacy. The studies in this book challenge the view that Adrian was little more than a cipher, the tool of powerful factions in the Curia. This is the first large-scale work on Adrian since 1925, and is supported by a substantial appendix of relevant sources and documents in facing translation. Relations with the Empire, the Norman kingdom and the Patrimony are all radically reassessed and the authenticity of 'Laudabiliter' reconsidered. At the same time, the spiritual, educational and devotional contexts in which he was operating are fully assessed; his activities in Catalonia and his legatine mission to Scandinavia are examined in the light of recent research, and his special relationship with St Albans is explored through his privileges to this great abbey. These studies by leading scholars in the field, together with the introductory chapter by Christopher Brooke, reveal an active and engaged pope, reacting creatively to the challenges and crises of the Church and the world.

Innocent III - Studies on Papal Authority and Pastoral Care (Hardcover, New Ed): Brenda Bolton Innocent III - Studies on Papal Authority and Pastoral Care (Hardcover, New Ed)

Pope Innocent III has long been seen as a central figure in the history of the medieval papacy. The Imperial struggle, on which attention has most often focused, is not, however, Brenda Bolton's direct concern in these articles; she has rather sought to uncover the spiritual motivation of Innocent's mission as pope. The first item, newly written for this volume, brings out the importance to Innocent of the physical context of Rome - as the City of the Faith. The following studies look at his exercise of papal authority: first, as Bishop of Rome, to establish a position from which to implement reform; then in relation to secular powers and, in particular, to the establishment of the Cistercian Order. The second section turns to the theme of pastoral care, showing Innocent's concern for the needy and, more generally, emphasizing his generous response to those accused of heresy - his aim being to include, not exclude, and to channel popular enthusiasms to the benefit of the Church and Rome.

Elected pope in the wake of a rebellion, Eugenius III came to power as a relative unknown during a time of crisis. This book examines the controversial developments in papal justice and theological debate during his pontificate, his treatment of Cistercian monasteries, his relationships with France, Spain, and Rome, his work in the papal states, and the crusades. It offers a new view of an under-appreciated pope and the place of the church in a rapidly changing European society.

Ever since Innocent III's election in 1198, he has been regarded as il grande papa (the great pope) whose influence and contributions, as a canonist and political leader, have set the tone for Church history. This collection attempts to move away from such stereotypical views in order to seek a greater understanding of the Pope among a wider audience. Innoce nt III: the man and his faith; this is the basis for Brenda Bolton's selection of primary sources, drawing as it does on eyewitnesses and other contemporaries, including the bitingly critical satirists and even an opponent or two. Translations of key sources that are directly usable in students' own work. It provides texts central to medieval studies courses. The basic premise of the series is that translations must be accompanied by sufficient introductory and explanatory material.
