This text presents a wide variety of common types of models found in other mathematical modeling texts, as well as some new types. However, the models are presented in a very unique format. A typical section begins with a general description of the scenario being modeled. The model is then built using the appropriate mathematical tools. Then it is implemented and analyzed in Excel via step-by-step instructions. In the exercises, we ask students to modify or refine the existing model, analyze it further, or adapt it to similar scenarios.
Exploitation filmmakers played a significant role in revolutionizing American cinema during the 1960s and early 1970s, churning out a string of independent Westerns, biker films, nudie-cuties and horror flicks in record times and often on shoestring budgets. With titles like ""Horror of the Blood Monsters"", ""Cycle Savages"" and ""The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant"", these films pushed the boundaries of acceptable on-screen violence and nudity and kept the American theater industry afloat as several major studios teetered on the brink of financial collapse. This work tells the story of that 'other' Hollywood through interviews with 16 directors, performers, screenwriters, and stuntmen who helped bring these zero-budget films to the screen against incredible odds. The interviews give insights into exploitation filmmaking from the perspectives of pioneering directors Al Adamson and Jack Hill, actors Jenifer Bishop and Robert Dix, and stuntmen Gary Kent and Gary Littlejohn, and others. The work includes more than 50 photographs, including many rare behind-the-scenes images of the filmmakers on set.

In the second half of the 20th century, landmark works of horror film history were as much the product of enterprising regional filmmakers as of the major studios. From backwoods Utah to the Louisiana bayous to the outer boroughs of New York, independent, regional films like Night of the Living Dead, Last House on the Left, I Spit on Your Grave, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Evil Dead stood at the vanguard of horror cinema. This overview of regionally produced horror and science fiction films includes interviews with 13 directors and producers who operated far from mainstream Hollywood, along with a state-by-state listing of regionally produced genre films made between 1959 and 1990. Highlighting some of the most influential horror films of the past 50 years, this informative volume celebrates not only regional filmmaking, but also a cultural regionalism that is in danger of vanishing.
Part Of The Jones And Bartlett Learning International Series In Mathematics Written For The One-Term Introductory Probability And Statistics Course For Mid- To Upper-Level Math And Science Majors, Essentials Of Mathematical Statistics Combines The Topics Generally Found In Main-Stream Elementary Statistics Books With The Essentials Of The Underlying Theory. The Book Begins With An Axiomatic Treatment Of Probability Followed By Chapters On Discrete And Continuous Random Variables And Their Associated Distributions. It Then Introduces Basic Statistical Concepts Including Summarizing Data And Interval Parameter Estimation, Stressing The Connection Between Probability And Statistics. Final Chapters Introduce Hypothesis Testing, Regression, And Non-Parametric Techniques. All Chapters Provide A Balance Between Conceptual Understanding And Theoretical Understanding Of The Topics At Hand. Key Features Of Essentials Of Mathematical Statistics: - End-Of-Section Exercises Range From Computational To Conceptual To Theoretical. - Many Sections Include A Sub-Section Titled "Software Calculations" Which Gives Detailed Descriptions Of How To Perform The Calculations Discussed In The Section Using The Software Minitab, R, Excel, And The TI-83/84 Calculators. - Provides A Clear Balance Between Conceptual Understanding And Theoretical Understanding - Exercises Throughout Vary In Level Of Difficulty And Scope.
