Brian O Conchubhair, Samuel K. Fisher
R1,431 Discovery Miles 14 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bone and Marrow/Cnamh agus Smior: An Anthology of Irish Poetry from Medieval to Modern is the most inclusive and comprehensive anthology of Irish-language poetry to date. Impressive in its breadth and scholarly in its depth, this collection casts a wide net, and in tracing Irish history since the sixth century to the present day, it makes evident that so much of the bone and marrow of Irish history and culture is poetry. Across the turbulent and often traumatic centuries, poets witnessed and gave witness to a multiplicity of Irish experiences; the rich and multifaceted tradition they created is both a reckoning with Irish, European, and global realities, and an imaginative response to them. Capturing the power and beauty of this diverse tradition, this indispensable volume reveals poetry's centrality to Irish history and culture. Meticulously researched by a team of twenty-two renowned international scholars, it features many new translations, introductory essays, and explanatory headnotes. This bilingual anthology should prove of inestimable value to students, academic, educators, and all those interested in Ireland's ever-evolving poetic traditions and culture.

R1,430 Discovery Miles 14 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in Irish in 1937, this collection of journal and diary entries is a compelling first-hand account of Douglas Hyde's eight-month fundraising odyssey through the United States from 1905 to 1906. Published for the first time in a bilingual edition, complete with newly discovered archival material and extensive illustrations, this book navigates Hyde's thoughts on his journey in their original Irish, accompanied by a faithful English translation Hyde's work on this tour, undertaken on behalf of the Gaelic League, was both culturally and politically vital. The finance he raised contributed to the hiring and training of Irish-language teachers and organisers who travelled across Ireland spreading the Gaelic League message. These funds sustained the cultural revolution, which, in turn, gave rise to the political uprising from which Irish sovereignty would ultimately flow. This collection is beautifully designed and colour illustrated with a wide selection of original images and hand-written postcards. With an introduction by President Michael D. Higgins, and punctuated with entertaining pen pictures of prominent figures in US history (including President Theodore Roosevelt), this study recounts an important part in the life of one of Ireland's most under-appreciated leaders and captures an Ireland on the very brink of seismic change.

Almost a century ago a small body of men engaged in combat with the armed forces of an Empire. Militarily they were weak. Their strength lay in their faith in their cause and in the unflinching support of a civilian population which refused to be cowed by threats or by violence. This new edition of Kerry's Fighting Stories features stories and reports from every aspect of the conflict, from the formation of the Volunteers in Kerry early in the twentieth century, through the first casualties as the Easter Rising took its toll and on to the campaigns in the East and West of the county during the war of Independence itself. With barracks attacks, ambushes, shootings and even engagements with warships, it brings to life a conflict that is fading from the collective memory of the county and country.Kerry's Fighting Stories offers a fascinating perspective on the struggle for independence in Kerry directly from the men who took part in the actions themselves.

The Irish Revival - A Complex Vision (Paperback): Joseph Valente, Marjorie Howes The Irish Revival - A Complex Vision (Paperback)

R1,328 Discovery Miles 13 280 Out of stock

The Irish Revival has inspired a richly diverse and illuminating body of scholarship that has enlarged our understanding of the movement and its influence. The general tenor of recent scholarly work has involved an emphasis on inclusion and addition, exploring previously neglected texts, authors, regional variations, and international connections. Such work, while often excellent, tends to see various revivalist figures and projects as part of a unified endeavor, such as political resistance or self-help. In contrast, The Irish Revival: A Complex Vision seeks to reimagine the field by interpreting the Revival through the concept of "complexity," a theory recently developed in the information and biological sciences. Taken as a whole, these essays show that the Revival's various components operated as parts of a network but without any overarching aim or authority. In retrospect, the Revival's elements can be seen to have come together under the heading of a single objective; for example, decolonization broadly construed. But this volume highlights how revivalist thinkers differed significantly on what such an aspiration might mean or lead to: ethnic authenticity, political autonomy, or greater collective prosperity and well-being. Contributors examine how relationships among the Revival's individual parts involved conflict and cooperation, difference and similarity, continuity and disruption. It is this combination of convergence without unifying purpose and divergence within a broad but flexible coherence that Valente and Howes capture by reinterpreting the Revival through complexity theory.
