Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it. Connecticut, 1666: An ancient spirit awakens in a dark wood. The wildfolk call him Father, slayer, protector. The colonists call him Slewfoot, demon, devil. To Abitha, a recently widowed outcast, alone and vulnerable in her pious village, he is the only one she can turn to for help. Together, they ignite a battle between pagan and Puritan – one that threatens to destroy the entire village, leaving nothing but ashes and bloodshed in their wake. This terrifying tale of bewitchery features more than two dozen of Brom’s haunting full-color paintings and brilliant endpapers, fully immersing readers in this wild and unforgiving world.
As elders are living longer and healthier lives, these additional years call for what author Olga Spencer explains is a new vision and fulfillment of the senior stage. Here psychologist Spencer pinpoints how we can transform our perception of aging, changing from seeing senior years as a time of decline, to seeing this stage as a great opportunity for final, ultimate development. We can all transform our lives, to recognize new, unexpected and vital experiences and potentials, she explains. Enlisting fields as diverse as psychology, medical science, physics and cosmology, Spencer shows us the new frontiers in aging, and how our choices determine our destiny. Spencer also focuses on peak experiences, those moments that are for us validation of life lived fully and with passion, and their importance to seniors to not only fulfillment but also biological wellness and independence ce. Three of her book's major points are that aging begins in the mind, that aging is an obsolete concept, and that lifestyle (not age) determines successful aging. This thought-provoking book, written with the assistance of two medical doctors and a registered dietician, will interest any readers over 50 who want to live their senior years to their fullest, as well as their family members and loved ones, in addition to social workers, mental health professionals, medical professionals, clergy and other professionals in roles caring for seniors.
This book provides a state-of-the-art guide to the rapidly growing field of traumatic stress. It reviews and integrates the many scientific findings from psychology, psychiatry and sociology into an encompassing model. This general model is applicable to the reactions to war stress, disaster, violence, accidents and bereavement. Topics such as normal and disturbed coping patterns, social support and various risk factors are also discussed. In addition to the theoretical model, a number of treatment methods for posttraumatic stress disorders is described. Theoretical and practical issues of these treatments are presented. The efficiency of the methods is elucidated by the description of a psychotherapy outcome study on these methods. Information of prevention programs for victims of serious life events is also provided. This integrative approach is of interest to researchers, clinicians, public health workers, physicians, personnel workers, and all other professionals who are involved in research and/or health care with regard to traumatic events.
Helping Children Cope with Trauma bridges theory and practice in examining emerging approaches to enhancing resilience and treating traumatised children. Adopting a child-centred perspective, it highlights the importance of the synergy between individual, family, community and social interventions for recovery from post-traumatic stress. Consisting of chapters by an international range of contributors, the book is presented in three sections, reflecting the ecological circles of support that facilitate healthy development in the face of traumatic circumstances. Section 1, Individual, addresses the impact of exposure to trauma and loss on post-traumatic adaptation, focusing on biological aspects, attachment patterns, emotion regulation and aggressive behaviour in children. Section 2, Family, looks at the concept of family resilience, the impact of trauma on playfulness in toddlers and parents, innovative models for working with children traumatised by war, domestic violence and poverty and describes the challenges faced by refugee families in the light of intergenerational transmission of trauma. Section 3, Community, broadly explores the concept of community resilience and preparedness, the centrality of the school in the community during times of war and conflict, post-traumatic distress and resilience in diverse cultural contexts and the impact of trauma work on mental health professionals who live and work in shared traumatic realities. The book concludes with a theoretical discussion of the concept of Survival Mode as an organisng principle for understanding post-traumatic phenomena. Helping Children Cope with Trauma will provide mental health professionals, child welfare workers, educators, child development experts and researchers with a thorough understanding of the needs of children after trauma and how those needs may best be met.
Africa's Last Romantic: The Films, Books and Expeditions of John L. Brom captures the drama and excitement of John L. Brom's film expeditions from 1949 to 1962 through sub-Saharan Africa. Brom was the only explorer to follow the footsteps of Henry Morton Stanley and in a documentary interviewed the two last survivors of Stanley's expeditions from 1874 to 1890. In 1955 he also interviewed the famous nineteenth-century East African slave trader Tippu Tip's grandson, who defended his grandfather's trade. Brom's expedition was the basis for his bestseller 20,000 Miles in the African Jungle, which was translated into eleven languages. Brom managed to interview and film the rulers and tribes he encountered before they were decimated in the civil wars of the Congo after independence, and his historic films are now preserved in the Human Studies Film Archives of the Smithsonian Institution. Over 500 articles were published on Brom's work on both sides of the Atlantic during his lifetime. Africa's Last Romantic is a useful addition to college courses in Third World cinema, cinema studies, and African history.

This book is intended to raise parents' awareness of stress they and their children go through as they face the pressures of modern life. When parents become aware of these pressures they can deal with them, model a positive attitude to their children, and help children express and manage their emotions in order to ensure a healthier development of children and a better relationship in the family. The book is divided into four chapters: Chapter 1 explores sources of stress in modern life while Chapter 2 demonstrates how stress impacts parenting through the elements: academic pressure, extracurricular activities, and toys. Chapter 3 lays out the intellectual, emotional, physical and social symptoms suffered by children of stressed-out parents. Ways out of the rat race are portrayed in Chapter 4.

Waste has plagued almost every industrial-age firm for the past century. In this powerfully argued alternative to conventional cost management thinking, experts H. Thomas Johnson and Anders Broms assert that any company can avoid the waste that is generated through excessive operating costs in the short run and excessive losses from market instability in the long run. To gain more secure levels of profitability, management must simply change how it thinks about work and how it organizes work. "Profit Beyond Measure" details how two extremely profitable manufacturers, Toyota and the Swedish truck maker Scania, have rejected the traditional mechanistic mindset of managing by results that generates waste. Johnson and BrAms explain how Toyota and Scania achieve their legendary cost advantage through a revolutionary concept they call "managing by means" (MBM). Instead of being driven to meet preconceived accounting targets, the production systems of Toyota and Scania are governed by the three precepts that guide all living systems: self-organization, interdependence, and diversity. Amid a wealth of new insights into Toyota's vaunted system, Johnson and Broms introduce the tools of MBM to show how design, production, and profitability analysis are done to customer order. They demonstrate that by following the principles that emulate life systems, even a lean and profitable company can organize work to greatly lessen its long-term earnings instability and sharply reduce its short-run operating costs. Scania has achieved sixty-five years of financial stability and longevity in the face of fierce competition. Toyota has amassed a market value since 1988 that has rivaled -- or sometimes surpassed -- the American "Big Three" automakers combined. The principles that Johnson and Broms set forth in "Profit Beyond Measure" can guarantee the same richer, longer life to any company that applies them. |
