Any true baseball fan has heard the famous World Series stories about Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series, Bill Mazeroski’s Series-ending home run in 1960, and Bill Buckner’s blunder to end Game 6 of the 1986 Series. Many fans, however, may not be aware of other less well-known but equally engaging stories about the Fall Classic. Shadows of Glory recounts 18 of these stories. Readers will encounter some unlikely World Series heroes, such as Dusty Rhodes, the reserve outfielder whose clutch pinch-hits helped the New York Giants win the 1954 World Series, and Brian Doyle, the light-hitting utility infielder who was a batting star for the New York Yankees in their 1978 Series triumph. They will find stories shaped by world events, such as the Spanish flu pandemic and world wars, which significantly affected team rosters and thus the participants and outcomes of the 1918 and 1944 World Series. Baseball lovers will experience a range of emotions—heartbreak that Bill Bevens, an ordinary pitcher, came within an out of the first World Series no-hitter in 1947 and then lost the no-hitter and game on one pitch; outrage that umpire Don Denkinger received death threats after missing a call in the 1985 World Series; and amusement that Cliff Lee, stuck in a traffic jam on his way to start Game 1 of the 2009 World Series, hopped out of the cab he was in and made his way to the subway. Shadows of Glory will captivate casual and hard-core fans alike.
Japan's Foreign Relations in Asia has been specifically designed to introduce students to Japan's foreign relations in Asia since 1990, a period in which there have been dramatic developments in Japan, including the reinterpretation of the Constitution and expanded US-Japan defence cooperation. The geopolitical dynamics and implications of these new developments are profound and underscore the need for a new textbook on this subject. Covering not only the key regional players of China and the Koreas, this textbook also encompasses chapters on Japan's relations with India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand, along with its multilateral engagement and initiatives. Combined with transnational chapters on critical issues, key themes covered by this book include: An historical overview of key post-war developments. Japan's evolving security policy. Analysis of the region's escalating maritime disputes. An evaluation of Japanese soft power in Asia. Written by leading experts in accessible, jargon-free style, this new textbook will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students of Japanese politics, international relations and foreign policy and Asian affairs in general.

Large surface computing devices (wall-mounted or tabletop) with touch interfaces and their application to collaborative data analysis, an increasingly important and prevalent activity, is the primary topic of this book. Our goals are to outline the fundamentals of surface computing (a still maturing technology), review relevant work on collaborative data analysis, describe frameworks for understanding collaborative processes, and provide a better understanding of the opportunities for research and development. We describe surfaces as display technologies with which people can interact directly, and emphasize how interaction design changes when designing for large surfaces. We review efforts to use large displays, surfaces or mixed display environments to enable collaborative analytic activity. Collaborative analysis is important in many domains, but to provide concrete examples and a specific focus, we frequently consider analysis work in the security domain, and in particular the challenges security personnel face in securing networks from attackers, and intelligence analysts encounter when analyzing intelligence data. Both of these activities are becoming increasingly collaborative endeavors, and there are huge opportunities for improving collaboration by leveraging surface computing. This work highlights for interaction designers and software developers the particular challenges and opportunities presented by interaction with surfaces. We have reviewed hundreds of recent research papers, and report on advancements in the fields of surface-enabled collaborative analytic work, interactive techniques for surface technologies, and useful theory that can provide direction to interaction design work. We also offer insight into issues that arise when developing applications for multi-touch surfaces derived from our own experiences creating collaborative applications. We present these insights at a level appropriate for all members of the software design and development team. Table of Contents: List of Figures / Acknowledgments / Figure Credits / Purpose and Direction / Surface Technologies and Collaborative Analysis Systems / Interacting with Surface Technologies / Collaborative Work Enabled by Surfaces / The Theory and the Design of Surface Applications / The Development of Surface Applications / Concluding Comments / Bibliography / Authors' Biographies

HOW TO SEPARATE THE NEWS FROM THE NOISE: WHAT EVERY INVESTOR NEEDS TO KNOW There is no shortage of financial advice these days. From cocky cable pundits to nattering news columnists to off-grid online bloggers, there are more so-called experts than ever before--and the noise can be downright deafening. This no-bull, bottom-line guide from "The Reformed Broker" Josh Brown and Yahoo Finance's Jeff Macke will help you cut through the cacophony and make the most of today's media news. It's an eye-opening crash course in separating financial facts from fiction--featuring interviews with some of the world's most influential investors, including: JIM CRAMER ("Mad Money") takes you behind the scenes of his polarizing TV program--and talks about his clash with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. HENRY BLODGET (Business Insider) shares anecdotes about tangling with Eliot Spitzer, covering the Martha Stewart trial, and launching his Business Insider site as a "marked man." BEN STEIN ("Win Ben Stein's Money") reveals how he really feels about Bernanke, Bogle, Buffett, and bailouts. KAREN FINERMAN (CNBC's "Fast Money") exposes the hype behind the headlines--and the "show biz" demands on television news pundits. HERB GREENBERG (TheStreet.com) explains why investors need to follow social media, where the "real" news is disseminated. BARRY RITHOLTZ ("Bailout Nation") reveals his secret for "watching" financial TV. You'll also find invaluable insights from the original father of financial TV, Jim Rogers, and from James Altucher, the most shockingly honest commentator in the history of the medium. And you'll get a front-row seat for the processing and packaging of the news and learn everything you need to know about the talking heads who shape each day's narrative. Up-close. In-depth. All-true. "Clash of the Financial Pundits" is the one guide that will change the way you look at markets and investing forever. PRAISE FOR JOSH BROWN'S "BACKSTAGE WALL STREET" ""Much like Michael Lewis's Liar's Poker captured the essence of 1980s institutional Wall Street, Brown's Backstage Wall Street re-creates the boiler room retail brokerage culture of the 1990s and early 2000s in vivid color."" -- FORBES ""Joshua Brown may be the funniest writer on finance today, but Backstage Wall Street could make you cry more than laugh. The buffoons, manipulators, and incompetents Brown parades before us are the stewards of our retirement accounts."" -- BARRON'S ""Run don't walk to read Brown's chronicles of deception perpetrated by] those wonderful folks on Wall Street, who nearly bankrupted the world's financial system a few short years ago."" -- DOUGLAS A. KASS, Seabreeze Partners Management, Inc.
