"Sonic Resource Guide" is a reference book for the application of
set theory principles to jazz improvisation. It is meant for the
musician who wants to explore new sounds for improvisation or
composition. The aim of "Sonic Resource Guide" is to bridge the gap
between highly mathematical pitch class theory books and the often
limited scope of jazz improvisation methods by demonstrating
various musical relationships that an improviser can use to create
fresh sounding musical content. The book reduces note relationships
down to two hundred and twenty prime forms. Endless combinations of
notes can be derived from these prime forms which are commonly
referred to as pitch class sets. The various melodic and harmonic
relationships of these pitch class sets are listed to help a
musician locate and utilize these relationships within their own
playing. Along with each pitch class set is a listing of possible
related jazz chords.Where appropriate a listing of all three and
four note chords can be found to aid in creating varied and unique
harmonic pallettes, as well as three, four, six and eight note
subset relationships to help in exploring subset based musical
ideas.Jazz musicians will find this book user friendly because all
relationships are listed as both pitch names and scale degrees. Set
theory students will find each pitch class set is also expressed in
its prime form.An index containing a simplified set list is also
included to help in locating a prime form's scales from any note
combination. There is also a brief theory section exploring some of
the uses of the information presented. Further books will explore
these theoretical relationships in depth.

Do you want to finally clear up any misunderstandings about the
Major, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian
scales? Do you want to see how they fit with chord progressions and
see a step by step process for applying them to the guitar? Here is
the book that will demystify these modes for you through simple
targeted exercises that apply these scales directly to the guitar.
You will also learn about the diatonic chords contained in all
these scales which will greatly help your ability to understand
chord progressions and get you on the path to writing your own
progressions. This book also continues with chord theory exercises
that were started in the New York Guitar Method Primer Book One
book. These theory exercises concentrate on 7th chords and apply
this information directly to the guitar fretboard which is crucial
to making music theory second nature. All the commonly used 7th
chord voicings are included with some truly effective ways to get
these chords memorized fast. The most commonly found Barre Chords
for thirteen different chord types which includes; Major 7th, Minor
7th, Dominant 7th, -7b5, Dom7sus4 Diminished7, MinorMajor7,
Major7#11, Major7#5, Dominant7b5, Dominant7#5, Major 6th, Minor 6th
are also covered. Simple chord progressions are presented to help
you apply these newly learned chords. If you have 1/2 hour a day
and really want to improve the nuts and bolts of guitar playing
this is the book for you. 151 Page book
Ever wonder what those chromatic notes are that jazz, rock and
fusion guitar players use when they are not playing scales and
arpeggios? Want to get that jazz sound where you can play a melody
without chords and hear the chord progression go by just based on
the melody? Look no further. The 24 chapters of this book cover all
aspects of using this more advanced way of playing called approach
notes. It gives you a way to organize your practice of these
approach notes but it doesn't stop there. It gives you all the
fingerings for 13 different arpeggios in 4 positions on the guitar.
If includes all the upper four string chord voicings so you can
bring your funk, R + B, and jazz chord playing to another level. It
also demystifies Passing diminished scales and gives you a detailed
list of how chords and scales interact. A Chord Reharmonization is
also included to show you how you can change chord progressions to
make them more interesting and dynamic. A must own for any
guitarist that wants to understand the advanced knowledge that most
progressive rock, fusion and jazz players posses. 150 Page book
This edition comes with no CD. You must purchase either the
associated CD separately or digitally download the CD from an
on-line vendor. Otherwise this book is exactly the same as the
book/CD edition.Just as an artist must know every color in order to
create a beautiful painting, a musician must know and hear all the
notes of the musical "palette" in order to create good music. This
ear training method has been developed to teach the student how to
hear the way musical sounds are organized within a key. With proper
application, the student will be able to: . Recognize notes without
depending on an instrument. . Identify which notes other musicians
are playing. . Instantly know what key a chord progression is in. .
Sing or transcribe the notes in a given melody. These are all
invaluable tools for both playing and composing music. It takes
time to develop a truly exceptional ear. This book presents a
long-term process, whereby pitch perception can be steadily and
significantly improved. The basic concepts of how to use this
method are followed by many pages of exercises making this book a
lifelong companion. All exercises in this book should be used with
the aforementioned separately available audio CD. This CD has the
same title as this book. The audio portion of this book is also
available in MP3 format. Both formats can be purchased from various
on-line vendors. A list of recommended vendors can be found on the
muse-eek.com website. This book is a required text at New York
University and Princeton University and is recommended for music
students ages 13 and up.
The New York Guitar Method series is structured to enable a total
beginner to learn the tools necessary to become a master musician
from the ground up. This Primer Book One should be used as a first
step toward New York Guitar Method Primer Book Two and Primer
Ensemble Book Two. All three books are prerequisites for students
entering NYU as a jazz guitar major and for students wishing to go
to the New York Guitar Summer Program at NYU.
"Set Theory for Improvisation Ensemble Method" is a series of books
exploring the relationships of post tonal theory to contemporary
improvisation. The series includes a theory book and several
ensemble books. The theory book gives the underlying information on
how each pitch class set can be applied to contemporary
improvisation while the ensemble method gives examples of applying
this information in the form of etudes.
For the intermediate to advanced jazz, rock, heavy metal or blues
guitarist who wants a BLACK BELT in scales - this is the Holy Grail

Break out of the box go way beyond just scales and their fingering
patterns forget about buying every new Shred video that comes out.
This book gives you the theory behind all the cool licks you ever

After this book, you will definitely have a black belt in Scales
Although this book is about learning to read on the guitar, at its
heart it is much more. If you feel that your rhythm isn't up to
par, your understanding of how to apply scales to chord
progressions needs improvement, your fretboard knowledge of notes
is weak or your ability to read chord charts is hit or miss then
this is the book for you. Each of the 24 chapters takes you through
a series of exercises to improve all these crucial aspects of your
guitar playing. These time tested exercises are highly targeted and
with a short 1/2 hour commitment each day you can truly transform
your guitar playing. As Joe Satriani says "If you are going to
study, study with a jazz player." This book is the next best thing
and will really improve your rhythm, time, form, fretboard
knowledge, and understanding of the application of 22 different
scales to chord progressions. If that is your goal then look no
further. 491 Page book
