Stormwater infiltration is the most complete approach to stormwater management. Only infiltration can simultaneously solve problems of water quality, flood control, streambank erosion, aquifer recharge, and maintenance of downstream base flows and wetland hydroperiods. Stormwater Infiltration is the first book to explain the principles of natural science on which infiltration is based, how to apply infiltration to any region of the country, and what kinds of results can be expected. It brings into one publication the complete range of necessary information on soils, vegetation, infiltration, hydrology, design criteria, site layout, construction process for surface and subsurface basins, porous paving materials, feasibility, maintenance, and performance. It draws more than half a century's actual experiences from all over the United States to place stormwater management in a context of environmental balance and quality for human life.
A Philosophy of Landscape Construction outlines a philosophy of
values in landscape construction, demonstrating how integral
structures, such as pavements and walls, constitute a key element
to how people interact with and inhabit the final design. The book
discusses how these structures enable, assist and care for people,
negotiating between the dynamic processes of site ecosystems and
the soil on which they are founded. They articulate spatial,
functional, cultural and ecological meanings. Within this
theoretical framework, designers will learn to recognize and insert
a set of core values into the most technical design stages to reach
their full potential. By offering a new perspective on landscape
construction, moving away from the exclusively technical
characteristics, this book allows landscape architects to realise
the ideal vision for their designs. It is abundantly illustrated
with examples from which designers can learn both successes and
failures and will be an essential companion to any study of built
landscapes.

Pavements are the most ubiquitous of all man-made structures, and
they have an enormous impact on environmental quality. They are
responsible for hydrocarbon pollutants, excess runoff, groundwater
decline and the resulting local water shortages, temperature
increases in the urban "heat island," and for the ability of trees
to extend their roots in order to live. Porous pavements, despite
their ability to mitigate these factors, remain the object of much
skepticism and controversy. Written by a renowned expert with 25
years of experience in urban watershed management, Porous Pavements
is the first comprehensive "encyclopedia" of porous pavement
materials. The book begins with five chapters that lay a foundation
for all porous pavement materials and applications, introducing the
types of materials and arrangements, their roles in the urban
environment, and the principles of pavement structure, hydrology,
and rooting space. The following nine chapters outline the costs,
maintenance requirements, advantages and disadvantages for
different applications, installation methods, sources of standard
specifications, and performance levels for each family of porous
pavement materials. Relying on case studies and factual data from
observed experience, and containing abundant references for further
information, Porous Pavements gives responsible practitioners a
complete toolbox from which to select the appropriate material for
site-specific conditions, providing a "green" alternative to
impervious pavements.
"Understanding and Addressing Girls' Aggressive Behaviour
Problems" reflects a major shift in understanding aggressive
behaviour problems among children. Researchers used to study what
went wrong with a troubled child and needed to be fixed; we now aim
to understand what is going wrong in children's relationships that
might create, exacerbate, and maintain aggressive behaviour
problems in childhood and adolescence. In this volume, leading
researchers in the aggression field examine, with a particular
focus on girls, how problems develop for children in relationships
and how we can help them develop healthy relationships.
Individual chapters explore biological and social contexts,
including physical health and relationship problems that might
underlie the development of aggressive behaviour problems. The
impact of relationships on girls' development is shown to be
particularly important for Aboriginal girls. Contributors discuss
prevention and intervention strategies that help aggressive
children build the requisite skills and relationship capacities and
also shift dynamics within critical social contexts, such as the
family, peer group, classroom, and school.
The support of healthy development not only of children but of
their parents and other important adults in their lives, including
teachers, has been shown to be effective in reducing the burden of
suffering associated with aggression among children and
adolescents--for youth themselves as well as their families, peers,
schools, communities, and society.

This work gives a comprehensive overview of the new field of
housing microfinance practice worldwide. The contributors provide
guidance to practitioners and policymakers on what works best, and
look at the applicability of developing experience for housing
microfinance in the US.
