Japan's Changing Generations argues that 'the generation gap' in Japan is something more than young people resisting the adult social order before entering and conforming to that order. Rather, it signifies something more fundamental: the emergence of a new Japan, which may be quite different from the Japan of postwar decades. It argues that while young people in Japan in their teens, twenties and early thirties are not engaged in overt social or political resistance, they are turning against the existing Japanese social order, whose legitimacy has been undermined by the past decade of economic downturn. The book shows how young people in Japan are thinking about their bodies and identities, their social relationships, and their employment and parenting, in new and generationally contextual ways, that may help to create a future Japan quite different from Japan of the recent past.
Weigh pivotal healthcare ethics, law, and public policy issues that resulted in tipping-point legal actionsWeighing the ethical considerations in healthcare and drug issues can be emotionally difficult and mentally challenging. Drugs, Ethics, and Quality of Life: Cases and Materials on Ethical, Legal, and Public Policy Dilemmas in Medicine and Pharmacy Practice is a fascinating casebook that clearly discusses the most contentious ethical conflicts that resulted in legal actions. This easy-to-read text provides all sides of controversial real-life cases that provoke spirited debate while teaching the fundamentals of pharmacy law and ethics. The book is a unique exploration into the basic principles of bioethics, end of life care, and drug research. Drugs, Ethics, and Quality of Life explains in detail the concepts of ethics, quality of life, beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice. Recent cases provide illuminating backdrops for the exploration of these concepts, making them easily understood. A special introduction includes important information about ethics and the pharmaceutical code of ethics. Two appendixes provide further opportunities for discussion and the examination of law and decisions, and resources about drug use decisions and situations. This thought-provoking textbook plainly shows the crucial role ethics plays in today's society. Ethical topics explored in Drugs, Ethics, and Quality of Life includes legal cases on: tobacco COX-2 inhibitors medical marijuana the morning after pill and other emergency contraceptives pain medications and palliative care drugs physician-assisted suicide drug use in medically futile situations gene therapy Drugs, Ethics, and Quality of Life is valuable, insightful reading as well as a good adjunct text for pharmacy students, pharmacists, medical students, physicians, bioethicists, students interested in bioethics, institutional ethics committee members, and anyone interested in bioethics.

Progress in nanoscale engineering, as well as an improved understanding of the physical phenomena at the nanometer scale, have contributed to the rapid development of novel nanostructured semiconducting materials and nanodevices. Using new approaches, semiconductor structures can be fabricated with sub-nanometer accuracy and precisely controlled electronic and optical properties. The immense technological potential and new exciting physics have stimulated interest in semiconductor nanostructures over several years. This book brings together a single comprehensive overview of recent progress and future directions in nanoscale semiconductor research. Fields ranging from materials science to physics, chemistry, electrical and microelectronic engineering, circuit design, and more, are represented. Topics include: quantum dot theory, growth and optics; single quantum dot spectroscopy; charge and spin; Si/Ge quantum dot structures; bio-quantum dots; electric force microscopy and charge injection; transport; Si nanocrystals and nc-Si superlattices; Si/Ge nanostructures; bioactive nanostructures; lithographic techniques and lateral nanopatterning; semiconductor nanowires and nanotubes; metallic and rare-earth-doped nanoparticles; theoretical studies and numerical simulations in Si/SiGe nanostructures and applications of Group IV nanoscale materials.
Secondary mathematics teachers working in the Australian education sector are required to plan lessons that engage with students of different genders, cultures and levels of literacy and numeracy. Teaching Secondary Mathematics engages directly with the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers to help preservice teachers develop lesson plans that resonate with students. This edition has been thoroughly revised and features a new chapter on supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students by incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and ways of knowing into lessons. Chapter content is supported by new features including short-answer questions, opportunities for reflection and in-class activities. Further resources, additional activities, and audio and visual recordings of mathematical problems are also available for students on the book's companion website. Teaching Secondary Mathematics is the essential guide for preservice mathematics teachers who want to understand the complex and ever-changing Australian education landscape.
