Research in cognitive psychology, linguistics, and artificial
intelligence - the three disciplines that have the most direct
application to an understanding of the mental processes in reading
- is presented in this multilevel work, originally published in
1980, that attempts to provide a systematic and scientific basis
for understanding and building a comprehensive theory of reading
comprehension. The major focus is on understanding the processes
involved in the comprehension of written text. Underlying most of
the contributions is the assumption that skilled reading
comprehension requires a coordination of text with context in a way
that goes far beyond simply chaining together the meanings of a
string of decoded words. The topics discussed are divided into five
general areas: Global Issues; Text Structure; Language, Knowledge
of the World, and Inference; Effects of Prior Language Experience;
and Comprehension Strategies and Facilitators, and represent a
broad base of methodology and data that should be of interest not
only to those concerned with the reading process, but also to basic
science researchers in psychology, linguistics, artificial
intelligence, and related disciplines.

Albanian cinema truly represents a terra incognita for most of the
world. Decidedly Europe’s most isolated country during the Cold
War era, communist Albania had already been cut off from the West
for centuries as a one of the western-most outposts of the Ottoman
empire. Nonetheless, and unknown to most of the world, communist
Albania had a vibrant cinema tradition. Although bound by official
orthodoxy, the films of the state-run Kinostudio enterprise were
surprisingly innovative and, at times, daringly subversive. This
book opens with examinations of moving images in Albania from the
Ottoman period, through those captured under independence and the
Fascist occupation. It subsequently foregrounds transformations in
Kinostudio, from the early optimism of socialist realism through
the brooding social angst of the 1980s, which constitute a bridge
to the socioeconomic concerns of Albanian films of the
postcommunist period.
The cultures of Nubia built the earliest cities, states, and
empires of inner Africa, but they remain relatively poorly known
outside their modern descendants and the community of
archaeologists, historians, and art historians researching them.
The earliest archaeological work in Nubia was motivated by the
region's role as neighbor, trade partner, and enemy of ancient
Egypt. Increasingly, however, ancient Nile-based Nubian cultures
are recognized in their own right as the earliest complex societies
in inner Africa. As agro-pastoral cultures, Nubian settlement,
economy, political organization, and religious ideologies were
often organized differently from those of the urban, bureaucratic,
and predominantly agricultural states of Egypt and the ancient Near
East. Nubian societies are thus of great interest in comparative
study, and are also recognized for their broader impact on the
histories of the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East. The
Oxford Handbook of Ancient Nubia brings together chapters by an
international group of scholars on a wide variety of topics that
relate to the history and archaeology of the region. After
important introductory chapters on the history of research in Nubia
and on its climate and physical environment, the largest part of
the volume focuses on the sequence of cultures that lead almost to
the present day. Several cross-cutting themes are woven through
these chapters, including essays on desert cultures and on Nubians
in Egypt. Eleven final chapters synthesize subjects across all
historical phases, including gender and the body, economy and
trade, landscape archaeology, iron working, and stone quarrying.
Your domain is rich and interconnected, and your API should be too.
Upgrade your web API to GraphQL, leveraging its flexible queries to

In this Nutshell resource, the author presents an instructional
framework for the five Rs: relevance, richness, relatedness, rigor,
and recursiveness. The book shows K-12 teachers how instruction
based on the five Rs, across content areas, can develop critical
thinking skills (classifying, comparing/contrasting, and analyzing)
and creative thinking skills (inferring, predicting, and
visualizing).
'As a single source of ideas for facilitators and school leaders,
this book is excellent. The author very thoroughly covers the
material, and the procedures are easy to follow' - Stephen H. Laub,
Principal, Rolla Junior High School, MO Today's workplace is
increasingly shifting from top-down, authoritative leadership to
engendering participation from all the stakeholders in a team. In
response to this ever-growing trend, R. Bruce Williams provides
group facilitators with insights and research about teams working
together to reach consensus and accomplish their goals. This
revised edition presents current brain research and its
implications for team leaders and members, and explores the growing
importance of participative processes in collaborative working
environments. In a user-friendly format, Williams offers more than
50 practical, step-by-step activities and strategies for immediate
implementation, with real-life examples to assist in the
consensus-building process. The activities address the four main
components of full consensus: * Creating a purposeful vision *
Effecting participative processes * Fostering individual commitment
* Building strong collaborative teams Use this valuable "road map"
to set the stage for establishing consensus and effecting
successful collaborative teamwork!
Even before the No Child Left Behind Act, there was much
discouragement about educational institutions. Now, with a focus on
high-level accountability, the mood in schools has dropped even
further. Many schools are overcrowded and face the task of
educating students from varied and sometimes broken environments.
Test scores often stay low in spite of great effort expended to
improve them. Many teachers are in desperate need of retooling. All
of this can combine to produce a bleak atmosphere of failure. In
the midst of improving curriculum, instruction, and assessment--and
while working hard to improve students' test scores--attention
needs to be spent on nurturing the human spirit so that this
challenging task can continue with hope and confidence. This
resource helps educators learn successful ways to respond to
today's increasing diversity among both student body and faculty.
The author looks at what school leaders must do to invigorate and
sustain the spirits of members of their learning communities as
they drive toward achieving demanding goals. Practical tools and
strategies in every chapter help speed the translation from theory
to practice, and planning templates and completed samples offer
essential elements needed for change.
