The Adirondacks have been written about since they were first spied by Europeans more than five hundred years ago. Yet for most of the intervening centuries, few of those writers lived in the region of which they wrote--they were not part of the landscape. That has changed in recent years as writers have moved to the Adirondacks and formed a literary community. Perhaps inspired by these writers, longtime residents have discovered that they, too, could be part of such a community. From scratching out a living in the harsh landscape to the wonders of a moonlit cross-country ski, these writers celebrate life in the Adirondacks. In this remarkable collection of essays, the experiences of Adirondack natives are interwoven with the land in a part of America that is both demanding and rewarding.

At the Crossroads of Pedagogical Change in Higher Education - Exploring the Work of Faculty Developers (Paperback): Melanie N.... At the Crossroads of Pedagogical Change in Higher Education - Exploring the Work of Faculty Developers (Paperback)
Melanie N. Burdick, Heidi L. Hallman
R1,154 Discovery Miles 11 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores pedagogical change and innovation in US colleges and universities, and how faculty are prepared to adapt to such changes. Drawing from interviews with faculty developers at Centers for Teaching and Learning at research and teaching-focused institutions across the United States, this book explores how traditional forms of pedagogy are shifting toward student-centered and student-directed forms of learning. The book unpacks the historical development of changes in teaching, drawing from research in teaching within particular domains such as diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education, community-based teaching and learning, online and hybrid teaching and learning, course design, interdisciplinary teaching and learning, assessment of teaching, and the scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). This is an invaluable resource for faculty, graduate students, and scholars of Higher Education, and faculty developers looking to promote a culture of continual renewal and innovation at their institutions.

Legacies of Liberation - The Progressive Catholic Church in Brazil at the Start of a New Millennium (Paperback): John Burdick Legacies of Liberation - The Progressive Catholic Church in Brazil at the Start of a New Millennium (Paperback)
John Burdick
R984 Discovery Miles 9 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 2004. In Brazil the liberationist reading of the Bible was once supposed to be an unstoppable force for social change, yet many observers now say that in the era of neo-liberalism the liberationist project may be counted all but dead. In Legacies of Liberation, John Burdick offers a bold new interpretation of the state of the Catholic liberationism. Challenging the claim that it is dead, Burdick carefully builds the case that it continues to exert a major influence on Brazilian society and culture, through its penetration of a broad range of grassroots struggles, especially those having to do with race, gender, and land. Burdick brings to bear on his analysis an understanding of Brazil rooted in twenty years of fieldwork, and a perspective shaped by anthropology, theology and history.

Community Fieldwork in Teacher Education - Theory and Practice (Paperback): Heidi L. Hallman, Melanie Burdick Community Fieldwork in Teacher Education - Theory and Practice (Paperback)
Heidi L. Hallman, Melanie Burdick
R1,293 Discovery Miles 12 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In teacher education, field work in community-based spaces (including foster homes and programs for homeless youth) is frequently contrasted with "traditional" field experiences in classroom settings, where beginning teachers are immediately introduced to teacher-centered models of instruction. This volume works against such a model, presenting a counter-narrative of new teachers' understanding of the act of teaching. By exploring their work with at risk youth in community-based sites, the authors uncover how non-traditional spaces for teaching and learning have the potential to open new doors for reimagining the teaching act and teacher identity. This volume examines how prospective teachers have used writing within unconventional spaces as catalysts for considering what it means to become a teacher, as well as how the work of teaching can be conceptualized. It unites the practical aspects of field work and with theoretical conceptions of teaching, and envisions how the work and the definition of "teaching" can be broadened.

Jake Burdick, Jennifer A. Sandlin, Michael P. O'Malley
R1,561 Discovery Miles 15 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The term 'public pedagogy' is given a variety of definitions and meanings by those who employ it. It is often used without adequately explicating its meaning, its context, or its location within differing and contested articulations of the construct. Problematizing Public Pedagogy brings together renowned and emerging scholars in the field of education to provide a theoretical, methodological, ethical, and practical ground from which other scholars and activists can explore these forms of education. At the same time it increases the viability of the concept of public pedagogy itself. Beyond adding a multifaceted set of critical lenses to the genre of public pedagogy inquiry and theorizing, this volume adds nuance to the broader field of education research overall.

Blessed Anastacia - Women, Race and Popular Christianity in Brazil (Hardcover): John Burdick Blessed Anastacia - Women, Race and Popular Christianity in Brazil (Hardcover)
John Burdick
R4,525 Discovery Miles 45 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The weakness of Brazil's black consciousness movement is commonly attributed to the fragility of Afro-Brazilian ethnic identity. In a major account, John Burdick challenges this view by revealing the many-layered reality of popular black consciousness and identity in an arena that is usually overlooked: that of popular Christianity.
"Blessed Anastacia" describes how popular Christianity confronts everyday racism and contributes to the formation of racial identity. The author concludes that if organizers of the black consciousness movement were to recognize the profound racial meaning inherent in this area of popular religiosity, they might be more successful in bridging the gap with its poor and working-class constituency.

The Color of Sound - Race, Religion, and Music in Brazil (Paperback): John Burdick The Color of Sound - Race, Religion, and Music in Brazil (Paperback)
John Burdick
R744 Discovery Miles 7 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Throughout Brazil, Afro-Brazilians face widespread racial prejudice. Many turn to religion, with Afro-Brazilians disproportionately represented among Protestants, the fastest-growing religious group in the country. Officially, Brazilian Protestants do not involve themselves in racial politics. Behind the scenes, however, the community is deeply involved in the formation of different kinds of blackness-and its engagement in racial politics is rooted in the major new cultural movement of black music. In this highly original account, anthropologist John Burdick explores the complex ideas about race, racism, and racial identity that have grown up among Afro-Brazilians in the black music scene. By immersing himself for nearly a year in the vibrant worlds of black gospel, gospel rap, and gospel samba, Burdick pushes our understanding of racial identity and the social effects of music in new directions. Delving into the everyday music-making practices of these scenes, Burdick shows how the creative process itself shapes how Afro-Brazilian artists experience and understand their racial identities. This deeply detailed, engaging portrait challenges much of what we thought we knew about Brazil's Protestants, provoking us to think in new ways about their role in their country's struggle to combat racism.

Richard K. Burdick, David J Leblond, Lori B Pfahler, Jorge Quiroz, Leslie Sidor, …
R2,479 Discovery Miles 24 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines statistical techniques that are critically important to Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control (CMC) activities. Statistical methods are presented with a focus on applications unique to the CMC in the pharmaceutical industry. The target audience consists of statisticians and other scientists who are responsible for performing statistical analyses within a CMC environment. Basic statistical concepts are addressed in Chapter 2 followed by applications to specific topics related to development and manufacturing. The mathematical level assumes an elementary understanding of statistical methods. The ability to use Excel or statistical packages such as Minitab, JMP, SAS, or R will provide more value to the reader. The motivation for this book came from an American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) short course on statistical methods applied to CMC applications presented by four of the authors. One of the course participants asked us for a good reference book, and the only book recommended was written over 20 years ago by Chow and Liu (1995). We agreed that a more recent book would serve a need in our industry. Since we began this project, an edited book has been published on the same topic by Zhang (2016). The chapters in Zhang discuss statistical methods for CMC as well as drug discovery and nonclinical development. We believe our book complements Zhang by providing more detailed statistical analyses and examples.

Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering Applications - A Review of the Past and Future Trends (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Jason A.... Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering Applications - A Review of the Past and Future Trends (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Jason A. Burdick, Robert L. Mauck
R5,847 Discovery Miles 58 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A concise overview of tissue engineering technologies and materials towards specific applications, both past and potential growth areas in this unique discipline is provided to the reader. The specific area of the biomaterial component used within the paradigm of tissue engineering is examined in detail. This is the first work to specifically covers topics of interest with regards to the biomaterial component. The book is divided into 2 sections: (i) general materials technology (e.g., fibrous tissue scaffolds) and (ii) applications in the engineering of specific tissues (e.g., materials for cartilage tissue engineering). Each chapter covers the fundamentals and reflects not only a review of the literature, but also addresses the future of the topic. The book is intended for an audience of researchers in both industry and academia that are interested in a concise overview regarding the biomaterials component of tissue engineering, a topic that is timely and only growing as a field.

Jennifer A. Sandlin, Brian D. Schultz, Jake Burdick
R7,940 Discovery Miles 79 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bringing together scholars, public intellectuals, and activists from across the field of education, the Handbook of Public Pedagogy explores and maps the terrain of this burgeoning field. For the first time in one comprehensive volume, readers will be able to learn about the history and scope of the concept and practices of public pedagogy.

  • What is 'public pedagogy'?
  • What theories, research, aims, and values inform it?
  • What does it look like in practice?

Offering a wide range of differing, even diverging, perspectives on how the 'public' might operate as a pedagogical agent, this Handbook provides new ways of understanding educational practice, both within and without schools. It implores teachers, researchers, and theorists to reconsider their foundational understanding of what counts as pedagogy and of how and where the process of education occurs. The questions it raises and the critical analyses they require provide curriculum and educational workers and scholars at large with new ways of understanding educational practice, both within and without schools.
