This book introduces the reader to the management consultancy technique of Organizational Role Analysis--a technique with the immensely practical purpose of helping managers to stay "in role and on task." As such, it provides a coherent, superbly illustrated framework for in-depth coaching. The ORA method is grounded in a process of consultation that derives from the conjunction of open systems theory, and psychodynamic understandings of human behavior. It enables the collaborative resolution of the mental and emotional tensions represented in the client's work role as he/she strives to manage the dynamics between the organization-in-the-mind and the organization-in-reality.While the method of Organizational Role Analysis presented in this book has been evolving for three decades, published accounts of the work have been sparse, spasmodic, and relatively obscure. This book brings together the work of experienced practitioners from around the globe who illuminate the guiding concepts with lively, practical examples that illustrate the variety of ways in which managers can receive coaching in-depth. These accounts are complemented by an extensive bibliography for further reading.Contributors: John Bazalgette, Ullrich Beumer, Hanna Biran, Irving Borwick, Jane Chapman, Laurence J. Gould, W. The current global financial crisis has raised awareness of the impact the world of finance has on the economy and the future of democracy. Following the crisis, this book aims at a deep understanding of the human psycho-social dynamics beneath the surface of the financial industry, its markets and institutions. It seeks to understand why the seemingly rational world of economic behavior, with its calculated models and predictions, at times goes horribly wrong. This book uses the discipline of socio-analysis to explore the meaning of money, markets and the broad financial world that so strongly affects our daily lives. Socio-analysis contributes to an awareness and understanding of underlying unconscious desires, fantasies and illusions that bring about the irrational inflation of faith and trust in the world of money, finance and capital(ism). The insight that the financial crisis OCywas essentially psychological in originOCO (Robert Shiller) and that the world of finance is broadly shaped if not determined by irrational often unconscious factors is not yet broadly shared. This book appears to be one of the first, if not the first contribution that explicitly focuses on what is beneath the surface of money, finance and capital. It invites the reader to explore the financial world in depth. The aim of this book is to provide businesses, organizational consultants, students, researchers and interested persons more broadly with a detailed exploration of the psycho-social dynamics of the financial industry as it exists currently within the capitalist system. The contributors to this book come from Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Sweden, The Netherlands, UK, and USA."
Breathtaking photographs and deeply personal stories from a leading surfing and nature photographer, conservation advocate, and social media force Wayward is a collection of striking photographs and the revealing personal stories behind them by one of the leading surf, nature, and adventure photographers of our time. At remote beaches and locales in places like Russia, Norway, Iceland, and the Aleutian Islands, Chris Burkard succumbed to hypothermia, destroyed thousands of dollars' worth of camera gear, and spent a few nights in jail. But in the process, he captured amazing and iconic images that have defined his life’s work. And while millions have seen his photographs in magazines, marketing campaigns for Patagonia, Sony, and others, and via his social media, Burkard has never given a full account of these journeys--until now. With never-before-seen images and the stories behind them, Burkard crafts an original narrative that combines the page-turning drama of a great explorer’s adventure story and the immediacy and power of unforgettable photographs. Chronicling both the failures and the successes he has experienced in building a career, Burkard shares an infectious passion for photography, surfing, and chasing dreams in some of the world’s most awe-inspiring places.
From agriculture to sport and from climate change to indigenous rights, transnational regulatory regimes and actors are multiplying and interacting with poorly understood results. This interdisciplinary book investigates whether, how and by whom transnational business governance interactions (TBGIs) can be harnessed to improve the quality of transnational regulation and advance the interests of marginalized actors. Exploring multiple sectors and issue areas, Transnational Business Governance Interactions presents new empirical and theoretical research from leading and emerging scholars and identifies obstacles to, and opportunities for, mobilizing TBGIs to enhance regulatory capacities, outputs and outcomes and to advance marginalized actors in transnational business governance. The prime readership for this work is an interdisciplinary audience of academics including scholars of law, business, environmental studies, international relations, political science, political economy and sociology. Because of its attention to practical strategies to harness governance interactions to enhance regulatory quality and advance marginalized groups, the book will also be of interest to high-level participants in global business governance, including standards-setting bodies, certification bodies, auditors, trade associations, civil society organizations, social movement organizers, national regulators, overseas development agencies and international organizations. An alien army is crossing the astral planes of the quantum field, snapping up the souls of the recently dead and taking possession of the living. The only one who can stop them is Harry Neuman, a womanizing, alcoholic movie star with his career on the skids and a contract to die again and again. This is Eternal Life Inc., a different kind of science-fiction novel combining physics and metaphysics in a fast-paced adventure about an alien invasion that starts not in outer space but in the inner space of the human mind.
Tom Burkard explores the central paradox of progressive education in this thought-provoking read. Schools in Britain and the United States helped lay the foundations for the greatest civilization the world has ever known. But for the last three decades, they have been in a state of perpetual crisis. Despite unprecedented increases in education spending, standards are plummeting and at least 20% of our children can't even read. Tom Burkard shows how an intellectually misguided elite, claiming to be experts in child development and psychology, have subverted the will of the people and used our children as guinea pigs in a grand experiment that has gone horribly wrong. In this book, Burkard highlights the central paradox of progressive education - despite the professed aim of creating a democratic society, it would be almost impossible to design a system better suited to perpetrating both class divisions and the gulf between the haves and have-nots. Provocative and outspoken, Burkard outlines his solutions to these problems, making this essential reading for everyone interested in the future of our schools, our country, and our culture.
This book samples the groundbreaking work that has been developed over the last twenty-five years by psychoanalysts, writers and practitioners associated with the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Studies of Organizations (ISPSO). What characterises this collection of original papers is an attempt to look at organizations, groups, teams
Quit your job, pack your boards, jump into the car, and surf your way down the California coast. Sound like a daydream? "The California Surf Project" is the fully illustrated travel diary of two surfers who actually did this. Professional photographer Chris Burkard and surfer and artist Eric Soderquist roadtripped in their beat up Volkswagen bus from the Oregon border to the Tiajuana Sloughs on a two-month quest to rediscover everything the Golden State's legendary waves have to offer. Along the way, they documented their experiences in photographs and diary entries, which were originally posted at heavily trafficked Website Surfline.com and are now collected in this beautiful coffee table book. Relive in more than 200 photographs their incredible adventure of crashing monster waves, sharing campfires with total strangers, and keeping the bus running with duct tape and prayers - in short, living the dream. Candid, dry, but often humorous text documents the inevitable ups and downs of a memorable journey. A professionally produced twenty-minute DVD tucked inside the back case features footage taken on a Super-8 camera during the roadtrip, too.

This book samples the groundbreaking work that has been developed over the last 25 years by psychoanalysts, writers and practitioners associated with the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Studies of Organizations (ISPSO).What characterizes this collection of original papers is an attempt to look at organizations, groups, teams and organizational role holders using psychoanalytic, systemic and psychodynamic perspectives that collectively eschew superficial, linear, prescriptive and mechanistic views of both the system and the individual within. These papers, delivered as presentations to the Society during the Annual Symposia of the ISPSO from its inception in 1983 to-date, collectively form an important commentary on the changing societal dynamics and current preoccupations facing the contemporary organizations, their leaders and their workforce. As such, these papers are representative of many that have contributed to and documented the development of the thought and praxis from a psychoanalytic perspective and systems thinking over the last quarter of century. While most of these papers have already been published elsewhere, the ISPSO as an organization wished to include them in this volume, recognizing their lasting influence and legacy as well as their ongoing impact upon the thinking and the practice of its membership and beyond.
This book reveals how conflicting worldviews are at the root of public controversies on policy and trade issues. It highlights the particularly controversial disputes at the level of the World Trade Organization in the case of regulating beef-hormones and GMOs, aiming to show how negotiators of international agreements, members of dispute settlement bodies, and policy makers in general could have recourse to concepts of other disciplines such as epistemology and philosophy in order to address deadlocked legal disputes. Ultimately, the book is a manifesto for independent and critical research.

This book presents a state-of-the art collection of original contributions on democracy, addressing three related themes: the complexity of modern democracies and their structural diversity; coping strategies of democracies in times of crises; and current and potential trajectories and transformations of democracy. The first part of the book maps the democratic landscape by revealing the diversity of democratic political systems, through either comparative analysis or case studies on the specific nature of political and administrative systems in interest intermediation and identity construction. The second part presents articles that investigate the response of democracies to times of crisis, with an emphasis on political economies and policy processes within the European Union. The third part offers studies on democracies that explore their adaptive potential in the context of globalization and in that of broader technical, institutional or cultural changes.
Putting Two and Two Together is a humorous and quirky collection of unusual, ingenious, and beautiful morsels of mathematics. Authors Burkard Polster (YouTube's Mathologer) and Marty Ross delve into mathematical puzzles and phenomena in engaging stories featuring current events, sports, and history, many flavored with a distinctive bit of Australiana. Each chapter ends with ""puzzles to ponder"" that will spur further reflection. These stories were written for a general audience, and originally appeared in the Maths Masters column in The Age newspaper. The book offers mathematical entertainment for curious readers of all ages, and assumes a minimum of mathematical background.

How do you convey to your students, colleagues and friends some of the beauty of the kind of mathematics you are obsessed with? If you are a mathematician interested in finite or topological geometry and combinatorial designs, you could start by showing them some of the (400+) pictures in the "picture book". Pictures are what this book is all about; original pictures of everybody's favorite geometries such as configurations, projective planes and spaces, circle planes, generalized polygons, mathematical biplanes and other designs which capture much of the beauty, construction principles, particularities, substructures and interconnections of these geometries. The level of the text is suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Even if you are a mathematician who just wants some interesting reading you will enjoy the author's very original and comprehensive guided tour of small finite geometries and geometries on surfaces This guided tour includes lots of sterograms of the spatial models, games and puzzles and instructions on how to construct your own pictures and build some of the spatial models yourself.
One century after Hilbert constructed the first example of a non-classical affine plane, this book aims to summarize all the major results about geometries on surfaces. Acting both as a reference and a monograph, the authors have included detailed sections on what is known as well as outlining problems that remain to be solved. There are sections on classical geometries, methods for constructing non-classical geometries and classifications and characterizations of geometries. This work is related to a host of other fields including approximation, convexity, differential geometry topology and many more. This book will appeal to students, researchers and lecturers working in geometry or any one of the many associated areas outlined above.
The safety of vehicle traffic depends on how well automotive lighting supports the visual perception of the driver. This book explains the fundamentals of visual perception, like e.g. physiology of eye and brain, as well as those of automotive lighting technology, like e.g. design of headlamps and signal lights. It is an interdisciplinary approach to a rapidly evolving field of science and technology written by a team of authors who are experts in their fields.

There are many ways to describe the gap, which a lean company has to jump to become innovative. Some people see the gap between research and design for production, where people with different mindsets find it hard to communicate and work for the same goal. Other people feel that the gap is the schism between effectiveness and efficiency, i.e. trying to do the right thing is not compatible with trying always to doing things right. Other people believe the gap to be caused by the different paradigms of exploitation and exploration. The financial constraints of globally compet ing companies striving to become more and more lean are leaving fewer and fewer resources for the necessary experimentation to find successful innovations. Whatever the explanation one thing is certain: globally acting companies have to marry short term success with long term sustainability. They have to be at the same time competitive with current products and services and innovative to prepare future products and services. This book offers a novel view for management to address and imple ment innovation. It shows that innovation can not be ordered but has to be lived. It illustrates with real life examples, how innovation requires cour age to do the right thing and not always just the safe thing. And it shows that courage can be its own reward. I wish you stimulating reading."
This second volume of the book on spin dynamics in confined magnetic structures covers central aspects of spin dynamic phenomena, so that researchers can find a comprehensive compilation of the current work in the field. Introductory chapters help newcomers to understand the basic concepts, and the more advanced chapters give the current state of the art for most spin dynamic issues in the milliseconds to femtoseconds range. Both experimental techniques and theoretical work are discussed. The comprehensive presentation of these developments makes this volume very timely and valuable for every researcher working in the field of magnetism. It describes the new experimental techniques which have advanced this field very rapidly. Among the techniques covered, particular attention is given to those involving high temporal, elemental and spatial resolution as well as to techniques involving magnetic field pulses with very short rise times and durations. |
