In 1983 numerous young adults with a family history of Huntington's chorea attended genetics departments for information about a new genetic test. This provided the opportunity for a larger scale study than had previously been possible of subjects affected by the illness and their unaffected relatives, and in particular, of the incidence of functional psychiatric disorder of various types.
