During the American Civil War, an educated Black woman posed as an
illiterate slave in the home of the rebel President Jefferson
Davis. Spying on the war councils of Davis and his advisers, she
risked her life to send vital intelligence to the U.S. military.
This was Mary Richards’ one-woman fight in the ongoing battle to
end slavery. Born into slavery herself but freed to be educated in
the North, she was sent to Africa as a teenage missionary. On her
return to the American South in wartime, she was recruited as a
Union spy and sent on her dangerous mission to the ‘Confederate
White House’. She risked her life again after the war, teaching
freed former slaves in rural Georgia, in the face of growing
threats from the Ku Klux Klan. ‘She Spied for Freedom’ is about
those who shaped Richards’ world—among them, her benefactor and
spymaster, Elizabeth Van Lew; her fellow agents; her three
husbands; and those, like Jefferson Davis and his wife, she dealt
with in the camp of the enemy. 'She Spied for Freedom' is the story
of a lone warrior for justice who faced poverty, illness, brutal
racism, and life-threatening danger—but never surrendered.
Harrison P. Spader sat a little too close. Shook hands a little too
long. High-fived a little too hard. And hugged a little too much.
Harrison P. Spader was a personal space invader. But that all
changes when he learns the Space Saver rhyme: Arms out front, then
out real wide. Now place your arms back by your sides. Author
Christianne Jones uses humour and relatable situations to teach
early learners about self awareness. This entertaining picture book
in the Little Boost series will tackle a much-needed topic for
teachers, parents, and librarians.

In this collection, continental and diasporan African women
interrogate the concept "sacred text" and analyze ways oral and
written religious "texts" intersect with violence against
African-descended women and girls. While the sanctioned idea of a
sacred text is written literature, this project interrupts that
conception by drawing attention to speech and other embodied
practices that have sacral authority within the social imaginary.
As a volume focused on religion and violence, essays in this
collection analyze religions' authorization of violence against
women and girls; contest the legitimacy of some religious "texts";
and affirm other writing, especially memoir, as redemptive.
Unraveling and Reweaving Sacred Canon in Africana Womanhood arises
from three years of conversation of continental and diasporan
women, most recently continued in the July 6-10, 2014 Consultation
of African and African Disaporan Women in Religion and Theology and
privileges experiences and contexts of continental and diasporan
African women and girls. Interlocutors include African
traditionalists, Christian Protestants and Catholics, Muslims, and
women embodying hybrid practices of these and other traditions.
This handbook begins with the history of Supply Chain (SC)
Engineering, it goes on to explain how the SC is connected today,
and rounds out with future trends. The overall merit of the book is
that it introduces a framework similar to sundial that allows an
organization to determine where their company may fall on the SC
Technology Scale. The book will describe those who are using more
historic technologies, companies that are using current
collaboration tools for connecting their SC to other global SCs,
and the SCs that are moving more towards cutting edge technologies.
This book will be a handbook for practitioners, a teaching resource
for academics, and a guide for military contractors. Some figures
in the eBook will be in color. Presents a decision model for
choosing the best Supply Chain Engineering (SCE) strategies for
Service and Manufacturing Operations with respect to Industrial
Engineering and Operations Research techniques Offers an economic
comparison model for evaluating SCE strategies for manufacturing
outsourcing as opposed to keeping operations in-house Demonstrates
how to integrate automation techniques such as RFID into planning
and distribution operations Provides case studies of SC inventory
reductions using automation from AIT and RFID research Covers
planning and scheduling, as well as transportation and SC theory
and problems
Be Prepared to Face Any Medical Emergency With This Essential Guide
While many first aid manuals provide valuable instructions on how
to respond to various medical situations, they may not meet the
needs of the average citizen preparing to meet a broad range of
medical emergencies, with limited skills, limited supplies, and
limited or non-existent support from the Emergency Management
System and medical professionals. In this color-photo illustrated
manual, veteran survivalist and trained EMT James C. Jones did not
create "just another" first aid book. Instead, each subject is
approached from the perspective of equipping the untrained citizen
to provide care for family members and neighbors, under extremely
trying conditions, without expert help. Prepper's Medical Manual
includes basic first aid subjects, such as bandaging, splinting,
control of bleeding, and treatment of shock, along with those
subjects specifically associated with the needs of those responding
to true disaster emergencies. Complete with multiple step-by-step
response guides and checklists for stocking personal medical
emergency kits, Prepper's Medical Manual can ensure readiness for
even the worst-case scenario.
All school districts have written statements of the educational
values and goals that members of the school community believe are
important and worth pursuing. They display these on the front page
of all school district public relations packets and on the walls of
school and district offices. While all segments of the school
community enthusiastically embrace the values and goals stated in
the documents, rarely, if ever, do they practice these goals and
values in classrooms or administrative offices. The gap between the
educational ideals spoken from auditorium stages and the
instructional regimes students experience in classrooms is the
result of schools designed to achieve institutional
goals-accountability, standardization, and efficiency-rather than
educational goals-thoughtfulness, deep knowledge, and
critically-informed citizens. This book is aimed at school
administrators whose goal is restoring the why of schooling to the
organizational structures and instructional routines that currently
govern public schooling in this nation.

"Creative Story Writing is the essential guide for all students
wanting to develop their literacy skills and improve their grades
in English assignments and examinations. It is the first in the
Teach Your Child to Write Good English series. Creative Writing has
been written by an experienced teacher and tutor and written with
the needs of children in mind. This book concentrates specifically
and in depth on Creative Writing required by the National
Curriculum, providing everything needed to stimulate a child to
write imaginatively. It is specifically targeted at Key Stage 2 and
3 (ages 8-14 years). However, it provides a useful aid for students
taking GCSE at foundation level. It contains material suitable for
SATS examinations, for those taking 11+ entrance examinations and
for students learning English as a foreign language. Creative Story
Writing will guide students through the story writing process, as
if they had a tutor by their side. This book is designed to help
the child with thinking up ideas, providing starting points for
writing, structuring and organizing their writing into paragraphs.
It features writing a good introduction with characters, setting
and plot, building up suspense and winding up the plot with a
suitable resolution. Attention is given to making writing more
interesting by varying sentence types, using punctuation and good
grammar. The student will investigate different narrative
structures for writing stories, exploring various viewpoints so
they can decide if they write in first or third person. They will
learn to evoke mood and atmosphere by using good vocabulary.
Creative Writing includes an exciting range of model answers and
sample texts written by children and provides practice questions to
test them. Common errors made by students are highlighted and
corrected. It is packed with vital hints and tips on gaining those
top grades. Creative Writing is ideal for working through at home,
supplementing school work. By working methodically through this
book the students will grow in confidence and will learn to enjoy
writing."
Food and the systems that produce, disrupt, prepare it are central
to all human life. Yet, scholarly analysis of the food systems that
support human life are highly fragmented across a variety of
disciplines. Public administration, with its focus on the doing of
public policy, would seem to be a logical home for analysis of food
systems in action. However, food is largely ignored by public
administration scholars, and scholars from other disciplines can
unintentionally draw up established public administration
literature. The chapters in this edited volume highlight where the
lenses and languages of public administration can and should be
used to analyze food systems. Viewed collectively, the editors
argue that the lenses and languages of public administration can
and should become a common ground for scholars and practitioners to
discuss food systems.
Now preppers can be ready for any possible emergency as James C.
Jones shares his fifty years of experience as an advocate for
survival, preparedness, and self-reliance. In Total Survival,
veteran survivalist James C. Jones delivers tips that cover the
most likely needs of readers and for which there is useful and
practical instruction. His goal is to share a variety of practical
survival skills, principles, and ideas in an easy-to read format
that will aid the reader in becoming stronger, safer, and more
self-reliant. The ten principles of survival that Jones sets out
are derived from analysis of true survival accounts. Studies of why
some people survived fires, plane crashes, assaults, and other
deadly situations while others in the same situations perished
confirm that these principles made the difference. His table of
contents includes: 1: Ten Principles of Survival (including
Anticipate and Stay Calm) 2: Ten Disasters to Prepare For
(including Home Fire While Asleep and Home Invasion by Intruder).
3: Ten Items for the Prepared Home (including Emergency Plans and
Packs) 4: Ten Items You Should Always Carry (including a Miniature
LED flashlight and a Whistle) 5: Ten Things You Should Have in Your
Survival Pack(s) (including Water and Weapons) 6: Ten Ways to Avoid
and Survive Street Crime (including Carjacking and Active Shooter)
7: Ten Self-Defense Moves You Should Know (including Front Choke
Counter and Handgun Defenses) 8: Ten Medical Skills You Should Know
(including Cardiac Arrest and Shock) 9: Ten Ways to Gather and
Purify Water (including Boiling Water and Distillation) 10: Ten
Ways to Gather and Store Food (including Foraging and Trapping) 11:
Ten Ways to Start and Maintain a Fire (including Fire by Flit and
Steel and Fire by Solar Heat 12: Ten Shelters You Should Know How
to Build (including Fallout Shelters and Snow Shelters) 13:
Terrorism Although the data and concepts in Total Survival are
derived from accounts of acute disasters-such as tornadoes, floods,
earthquakes, and epidemics-they apply equally well to chronic
disasters, such as economic decline, shortages, unemployment,
climate change, and personal family or health issues. In reality,
all of life is a survival challenge, and a survival emergency is
just a high-intensity life test. These ten survival principles are
the key to success in everyday life, especially during an
emergency.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tagging is now mandated by

What Are the Three Decisions?
Each day we are bombarded with a seemingly endless stream of
choices, a nonstop barrage of options that must be weighed and
considered. When it comes right down to it, though, most of the
decisions that we make on a day-to-day basis are trivial ones. How
many choices will you make today that will have a measurable impact
on your life next week? Or a year from now? Ten years from now?
Charlie Jones shows us that, when we clear away the clutter
that fills our daily existence, we'll find that there are only
three decisions that determine the course of each of our lives.
What are they? Read The Three Decisions and find out
The contributors in this study examine the historical Harlem
community during its renaissance period as well as its present-day
community. A cursory investigation of the existent that focus on
the Harlem community during its renaissance of the early twentieth
century reveals that the compilations are primarily ones that
present the subjects' life stories through the lens of praise
songs. This book, however, presents the Harlem community through a
lens that reveals more grounded and researched analyses that bring
the influences and contributions of the Harlem Renaissance to a
level of relevance in the twenty-first century from one or more
critical vantage points. This study aims to move beyond the more
obvious and foregrounded artistic contributions towards analyses of
the Harlem Renaissance alongside analyses of a twenty-first century
Harlem community and its present day contributions.
Three hundred and fifty years ago, Roger Williams launched one of
the world's first great experiments in religious toleration.
Insisting that religion be separated from civil power, he founded
Rhode Island, a colony that welcomed people of many faiths. Though
stark forms of intolerance persisted, Williams' commitments to
faith and liberty of conscience came to define the nation and its
conception of itself. Through crisp essays that show how Americans
demolished old prejudices while inventing new ones, The Lively
Experiment offers a comprehensive account of America's boisterous
history of interreligious relations.

Throughout history, societies have had to decide whom to
"sacrifice" and whom to help in times of disaster. This volume
examines how elite groups attempt to maintain power through the use
of particular economic, political, and ideological instruments and
how both ruling elites and common people endeavor to create
meaningful traditions while enduring hardship. The Political Economy
of Hazards and Disasters demonstrates how vulnerability is
economically constructed, primary producers adapt their production
regimes, how traders and merchants adapt their practices, and how
political economic objectives play out in recovery efforts.
First published in 1997, this volume examines how Bulgaria has been
an early starter, but a slow and often erratic mover in the path of
stabilization and systemic transition. This book provides a most
useful account of the development to date, and of the costs
associated with Bulgarian strategy (or lack of), empirical analysis
and theoretical reflections, especially in comparison with other
transition economies. It will be of great interest to any scholar,
official or businessman involved not only with Bulgaria, but more
generally with post-communist countries.
