Focusing on a burgeoning area of interest, this new study
illustrates relations between legal and theatrical discourses in a
range of plays. The essays focus on four general areas of interest
to establish the vital connections between early modern drama and
law during this seminal period in their professionalization: legal
language and its construction of social norms and realities,
positive law and the status of nature; the concept of property and
its contractual guarantees; and the creation of power and authority
under the law.
The objective of this meeting was to bring together collea gues
from different branches of observational astronomy and theoretical
astrophysics to discuss and analyse the rapid progress in our
knowledge and understanding of the matter surrounding stars,
streaming off stellar surfaces, or fall ing onto stars. The meeting
was sponsored by IAU Commis sions 36 (Theory of Stellar
Atmospheres), 29 (Stellar Spec tra), and 34 (Interstellar Matter).
There were two special reasons for organizing this meeting at
Heidelberg in 1986: During this year the University of Heidelberg
celebrated its 600th anniversary and the IAU symposium joined the
many scientific events accompanying this celebration. Secondly, the
year 1986 also marked the conclusion of a special co operative
research project ("Sonderforschungsbereich") in astrophysics at
Heidelberg, a major part of which had been devoted to the physics
of circumstellar matter. The main topics discussed at this meeting
were: (1) circumstellar matter, bipolar flows, and jets from young
stars and protostars; (2) circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars;
(3) stellar coronae; (4) stellar winds from hot and cool stars; (5)
dust formation and circumstellar chemistry. Many exciting new
results were presented in 21 invited or review papers, 26
contributed papers, and 127 poster papers. This symposium would not
have been possible without the generous financial assistance of the
International Astronomical Union, the German Science Foundation
(DFG), and the State Government of Baden-Wurttemberg. The practi
cal support of the University of Heidelberq and the Max
Planck-Society was also very valuable."
There has been much speculation about Castro and Cuba's future and
the state of U.S.oCuban relations in the post Cold War environment.
This study analyzes the forces which brought Castro to power and
sustained his control. Jordan discusses Cuba's historic nationalist
and dependency problems, the unique Castro personality, Soviet
strategy, and U.S. policy in reaction to these issues. With the
demise of the Soviet Union, one main pillar of the Castro regime
has been removed but he still continues to maintain control. This
book discusses the current situation and argues that the objective
of U.S. policy toward Cuba should be to assist and encourage a
regime transition which would allow Cuban people to exercise
political and economic freedom. Jordan examines the prospects for
assisting a Cuban transition to a constitutional democracy and
requirements for a healthy and competitive economy.
GeoffGoldspink and I edited a book, Mechanics and Energetics of
Animal Locomotion, which was published by Chapman and Hall in 1977.
It dealt at an advanced level with all aspects of animal
locomotion, emphasizing particularly the topics of then current
research. Since then there have been more elementary books on the
subject, including my own Locomotion of Animals (Blackie 1982), and
specialized books on such topics as swimming and flight, but
(despite very substantial progress in research) there has been no
advanced book covering the whole range of animal locomotion. It
seemed to me and to Professor Gilles (editor ofthis series) that a
new book was needed. Plainly, a book of this length cannot contain
everything that is known about animal locomotion. We have not
attempted to make it encyclopedic, but have tried to show where the
study of animal locomotion stands now, and where it is going. Older
books remain useful as sources of long-established information.
Leading scholars in the field analyze Shakespeare's plays to show
how their dramatic content shapes issues debated in conflicts
arising from the creation and application of law. Individual essays
focus on such topics such as slander, revenge, and royal
prerogative; these studies reveal the problems confronting early
modern English men and women.

Drug Politics is an enlightening new book by a man who knows this
disturbing and dangerous subject. A former United States ambassador
to Peru, David C. Jordan has testified before the U.S. Senate and
House Foreign Relations committees and has consulted with various
government security organizations. His account of government
protection of the criminal elements intertwined with local and
global politics challenges many of the assumptions of current drug
policies. Using examples from South America, Mexico, Russia, and
the United States, Jordan shows that the narcotics problem is not
merely one of supply and demand. Jordan argues that many national
and international financial systems are dependent on cash from
money laundering, and some governments are far more involved in
protecting than in combating criminal cartels.
