Does God's existence make a difference to how we explain morality?
Mark C. Murphy critiques the two dominant theistic accounts of
morality--natural law theory and divine command theory--and
presents a novel third view. He argues that we can value natural
facts about humans and their good, while keeping God at the centre
of our moral explanations.
The characteristic methodology of theistic ethics is to proceed by
asking whether there are features of moral norms that can be
adequately explained only if we hold that such norms have some sort
of theistic foundation. But this methodology, fruitful as it has
been, is one-sided. God and Moral Law proceeds not from the side of
the moral norms, so to speak, but from the God side of things: what
sort of explanatory relationship should we expect between God and
moral norms given the existence of the God of orthodox theism? Mark
C. Murphy asks whether the conception of God in orthodox theism as
an absolutely perfect being militates in favor of a particular view
of the explanation of morality by appeal to theistic facts. He puts
this methodology to work and shows that, surprisingly, natural law
theory and divine command theory fail to offer the sort of
explanation of morality that we would expect given the existence of
the God of orthodox theism. Drawing on the discussion of a
structurally similar problem--that of the relationship between God
and the laws of nature--Murphy articulates his new account of the
relationship between God and morality, one in which facts about God
and facts about nature cooperate in the explanation of moral law.

Every version of the argument from evil requires a premise
concerning God's motivation - about the actions that God is
motivated to perform or the states of affairs that God is motivated
to bring about. The typical source of this premise is a conviction
that God is, obviously, morally perfect, where God's moral
perfection consists in God's being motivated to act in accordance
with the norms of morality by which both we and God are governed.
The aim of God's Own Ethics is to challenge this understanding by
giving arguments against this view of God as morally perfect and by
offering an alternative account of what God's own ethics is like.
According to this alternative account, God is in no way required to
promote the well-being of sentient creatures, though God may
rationally do so. Any norms of conduct that favor the promotion of
creaturely well-being that govern God's conduct are norms that are
contingently self-imposed by God. This revised understanding of
divine ethics should lead us to revise sharply downward our
assessment of the force of the argument from evil while leaving
intact our conception of God as an absolutely perfect being,
supremely worthy of worship.

Over the past thirty years, there has been a dramatic shift in the
way the legal system approaches and resolves family disputes.
Traditionally, family law dispute resolution was based on an
"adversary" system: two parties and their advocates stood before a
judge who determined which party was at fault in a divorce and who
would be awarded the rights in a custody dispute. Now, many family
courts are opting for a "problem-solving" model in which courts
attempt to resolve both legal and non-legal issues. At the same
time, American families have changed dramatically. Divorce rates
have leveled off and begun to drop, while the number of children
born and raised outside of marriage has increased sharply. Fathers
are more likely to seek an active role in their children's lives.
While this enhanced paternal involvement benefits children, it also
increases the likelihood of disputes between parents. As a result,
the families who seek legal dispute resolution have become more
diverse and their legal situations more complex. In Divorced from
Reality, Jane C. Murphy and Jana B. Singer argue that the current
"problem solving" model fails to address the realities of today's
families. The authors suggest that while today's dispute resolution
regime may represent an improvement over its more adversary
predecessor, it is built largely around the model of a divorcing
nuclear family with lawyers representing all parties-a model that
fits poorly with the realities of today's disputing families. To
serve the families it is meant to help, the legal system must adapt
and reshape itself.

Four centuries ago, English explorer Henry Hudson (1570-1611),
commanding the yacht Halve Maen for the Dutch East India Company,
sailed into a New World tidal estuary near the landmass the local
Lenape Indians called the "island of many hills." The island was
Manhattan, and though Hudson was unlikely the first European to see
the river, it has been forever after that known by his name.
American politician and historian HENRY CRUSE MURPHY (1810-1882)
was serving as United States Minister at The Hague when he
privately published this 1859 monograph. A significant early
treatise on Hudson's voyages, it collects all the original
documents known to exist about Hudson's third voyage-the one in
which he sailed up what is now called the Hudson River-and explores
the "motives, purposes, and character" of the Dutch East India
Company and "the designs of the navigator himself at the time he
sailed upon that expedition," the author says in his preface. Hard
to find in print, this replica volume is an important new edition
of an essential work of documentation of one of the most
inadvertently profound incidents of global history: the beginnings
of the city that is arguably the capital of the world today.
Many new antileukotriene drugs are now marketed as antiasthma drugs
and represent the first new drugs in this field since the 1970s.
This book covers the steps that have led to the discovery and
development of these new drugs and offers detailed descriptions of
their clinical applications. The review chapters on the main
aspects of basic and applied leukotriene research are written by
leading specialists in the field, and the volume takes a new
approach in presenting information of particular interest to both
scientists and clinicians in the fields of asthma, inflammation and
allergic diseases.
The coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty has provided the EU with
new powers in the fields of criminal law and security law while
reinforcing existing powers in immigration and asylum law. The
Stockholm Programme is the latest framework for EU action in the
field of justice and home affairs. It includes a range of new
legislation in the fields of immigration and asylum, substantive
criminal law, criminal procedure and co-operation between national
criminal justice systems. The combination of the new treaty and
programme have made security and justice key areas of legislative
growth in the EU. This volume brings together a range of leading
scholars, as well as some of the most interesting new voices in the
debate, to examine the state of EU security and justice law after
the Lisbon Treaty and the Stockholm Programme. It provides a
critical examination of EU law in the fields of immigration,
asylum, counter-terrorism, citizenship, fundamental rights and
external relations. The book also examines the evolving roles of
the EU institutions and criminal justice agencies. It provides a
critical account of EU law in this field under the developing
constitutional and institutional settlement.
This book examines closely the structure of various lipids through
specific examples of mass spectral data obtained by different
ionization techniques-including electron ionization, chemical
ionization, and fast atom bombardment. Including over 80 complete
mass spectra of lipids as well as over 120 detailed mechanistic
schemes of their ion chemistry, this work will provide the advanced
student and experienced mass spectroscopist with a fundamental base
of information on fatty acyl-type lipids.
Security and Special Operations offers the first comprehensive
history of the Security Section of the Special Operations Executive
and its relationship with MI5 during the Second World War. The book
makes extensive use of recently declassified files in order to
examine the development of liaison between the two organizations.
It explores SOE's involvement with MI5's double cross operations
and offers a fresh perspective on both the 'Englandspiel' disaster
in Holland and the case of the notorious agent Henri Dericourt.
This pioneering book is the first comprehensive study of the Red
Sea as a sub-region of the international system in its own right.
Examining the international politics of the Red Sea region from the
Cold War to the present day, it argues that the Red Sea area
demonstrates the characteristics of a sub-regional system, given
its increasing economic and social interdependence, greater
regional integration, and flows of resources across it. It details
how stronger regional powers - Egypt, Israel and Saudi Arabia -
which co-habit the sub-region with much weaker, vulnerable and
fragile states, are seeking to stamp their own authority on this
dynamic sub-region. They have attempted to do so, the authors show,
through extension of their military and economic influence where
ever possible, while also forging regional partnerships aimed at
protecting their interests or to fend off possible encroachment of
others. The book discusses in great detail the security and
military dynamics of the sub-region; land and maritime borders; as
well as economic issues, including trade, migration, capital flows
and transport. It covers developments across the Red Sea and also
within all the states of this newly-forming sub-region.

This edited book examines English-Medium Instruction (EMI) language
policy and practice in higher education around the world,
highlighting how English language usage affects the
internationalization of universities, the way that disciplines are
taught and learned, and questioning whether internationalization
through EMI achieves the values of global citizenship and
inclusivity/diversity to which it aspires. Written by experts in
the field, the book includes data-based research from universities
around the globe, with three chapters on Asia and the Far East
(Malaysia, Japan and China), four on Europe (Denmark, the
Netherlands and Italy) and one each on Africa (Ethiopia) and
Central America (Mexico). Sources include policy documents,
questionnaire surveys, focus groups and semi-structured interviews
involving university policymakers, lecturers, students, and
administrative staff. This book will be of interest to students and
scholars of language and education policy, internationalization and
applied linguistics, particularly English-Medium Instruction (EMI),
academic English and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF).

Morality and religion: intimately wed, violently opposed, or
something else? Discussion of this issue appears in pop culture,
the academy, and the media_often generating radically opposed
views. At one end of the spectrum are those who think that unless
God exists, ethics is unfounded and the moral life is unmotivated.
At the other end are those who think that religious belief is
unnecessary for_and even a threat to_ethical knowledge and the
moral life. This volume provides an accessible, charitable
discussion that represents a range of views along this spectrum.
The book begins with a lively debate between Paul Kurtz and William
Lane Craig on the question, Is goodness without God good enough?
Kurtz defends the affirmative position and Craig the negative.
Following the debate are new essays by prominent scholars. These
essays comment on the debate and advance the broader discussion of
religion and morality. The book closes with final responses from
Kurtz and Craig.
The question, "Why should I obey the law?" introduces a
contemporary puzzle that is as old as philosophy itself. The puzzle
is especially troublesome if we think of cases in which breaking
the law is not otherwise wrongful, and in which the chances of
getting caught are negligible. Philosophers from Socrates to H.L.A.
Hart have struggled to give reasoned support to the idea that we do
have a general moral duty to obey the law but, more recently, the
greater number of learned voices has expressed doubt that there is
any such duty, at least as traditionally conceived. The thought
that there is no such duty poses a challenge to our ordinary
understanding of political authority and its legitimacy. In what
sense can political officials have a right to rule us if there is
no duty to obey the laws they lay down? Some thinkers, concluding
that a general duty to obey the law cannot be defended, have gone
so far as to embrace philosophical anarchism, the view that the
state is necessarily illegitimate. Others argue that the duty to
obey the law can be grounded on the idea of consent, or on
fairness, or on other ideas, such as community.
The emerging field of lipidomics has been made possible because of
advances in mass spectrometry, and in particular tandem mass
spectrometry of lipid ions generated by electrospray ionization.
The ability to carry out basic biochemical studies of lipids using
electrospray ionization is predicated upon understanding the
behaviour of lipid derived ions following collision induced
decomposition and mechanisms of product ion formation. During the
past 20 years, a wealth of information has been generated about
lipid molecules that are now analysed by mass spectrometry, however
there is no central source where one can obtain basic information
about how these very diverse biomolecules behave following
collisional activation. This book brings together, in one volume,
this information so that investigators considering using tandem
mass spectrometry to structurally characterize lipids or to
quantitate their occurrence in a biological matrix, will have a
convenient source to review mechanism of decomposition reactions
related to the diversity of lipid structures. A separate chapter is
devoted to each of seven major lipid classes including fatty acids,
eicosanoids and bioactive lipid mediators, fatty acyl esters and
amides, glycerol esters, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, and
steroids. Mechanistic details are provided for understanding the
pathways of formation of major product ions and ions used for
structural characterization. In most cases specific ancillary
information has been critical to understand the pathways, including
isotope labeling and high resolution analysis of precursor and
product ions. For a few specific examples such data is missing and
pathways are proposed as a means to initiate further mass spectral
experiments to prove or disprove pathway hypotheses. While this
work largely centres on the lipid biochemistry of animal
(mammalian) systems, general principles can be taken from the
specific examples and applied to lipid biochemistry found in
plants, fungi, prokaryotes and archeal organisms.
For two weeks during the spring of 1942, the horror of the Bataan
Death March - one of the most widely condemned atrocities of World
War II - unfolded. The prevailing interpretation of this event is
simple: American prisoners of war suffered cruel treatment at the
hands of their Japanese captors while Filipinos, sympathetic to the
Americans, looked on. This book questions that interpretation and
reconsiders the actions of all three groups in their cultural
contexts. A greater complexity is revealed: the violent nature of
the March was largely the result of culture clash - undisciplined,
individualistic Americans encountered Japanese who valued order and
form. Filipinos are shown to have been active, even ambitious
participants in the drama. Attention is paid to the crucial aspect
of memory, how it is constructed, by whom and for what purpose.
Most survivors wrote their accounts of the March decades after the
war and a number of factors distorted their stories.
