The book opens by tracing the events which led up to the creation of the BBFC and goes on to cover the Board's theoretical censorship principles concerning such matters as crime, religion and sex and to discuss how these principles were applied in practice to silent films. The advent of the talkies in the late 1920s caused a minor revolution in the Board's work during the 1930s and 1940s, when the cinema rose to the peak of its popularity. This era of the Board's history is examined in detail, with extensive use of the Board's surviving records and a whole chapter devoted to the special circumstances of the Second World War. The final chapter delves into the Board's work up to 1950, and investigates the connection between film censorship in Britain and the USA. To the vast majority of academic psychologists in the 1980s, the study of cognition referred to that area of psychology known as 'cognitive psychology'. The major basis of this area had been the computer metaphor with its accompanying notion of the individual as an information-processing system. Spatial analysis is the archaeology of space and place and is concerned with the creation of a cultural landscape focusing on archaeoastronomy, geoarchaeology, and ancient landscapes. Incorporating emerging technology such as GPS positioning and new forms of diagnostic imaging, spatial analysis can enable scientists to study the wider landscape of ancient human settlements. The ability to peer through time and clearly view the distribution of settlements and particular landforms and to determine resource areas provides researchers with invaluable information regarding the social relations, economy, and ecology of any community in the distant past.
