Demographers predict that by the end of the century
Spanish-speaking persons will constitute the largest minority group
in the United States--in this context, bilingual education must be
considered a crucial issue for educators and policymakers at the
state, national, and local levels. Professors Cafferty and
Rivera-Martinez analyze bilingual education policies and programs,
particularly as they affect the Puerto Rican child, and reach some
startling conclusions. They find that these programs do not,
despite the best intentions, offer the equal opportunity and social
mobility that has been their purpose. While the authors attempt to
neither examine nor define the general problem of bilingual
education methodology, they do address the problem of educating the
Puerto Rican child as one minority among many. They suggest
alternatives for solving the problem and recommend specific
policies for federal, state, and local governments attempting to
integrate Spanish-speaking minorities into the educational process.
This impressive volume reintroduces the importance of -- and the
contributions made by -- social psychology to school psychology. It
provides an overview of the basic areas of social psychology
(history, attitudes, attribution, attraction, and research methods)
as well as the traditional school psychology functions (assessment,
therapy, and consultation). To unite these two crucial areas, the
editors and their contributors provide detailed discussions of
specific educational and social issues such as substance abuse
prevention and treatment, loneliness, cooperative versus
competitive environments, and integration of handicapped and
culturally different children. Based on classical, contemporary,
and cutting-edge research and theory, this text should become an
essential reference tool for all school psychologists.

The essential sequel to Peter Clarke's companion book on Tal,
Mikhail Tal's Best Games of Chess. Cafferty takes us further on
Tal's career path, covering his loss to Botvinnik in the revenge
match, but also the triumphs of Bled 1961 and Tal's remarkable
sequence of tournament victories in 1973. Tal is the chess public's
favourite - a knight of the chessboard who knew no fear and
joyously sacrificed to fight at close quarters with the enemy king.
In the annals of chess, Tal ranks with Anderssen, Alekhine, Stein
and Kasparov as the undisputed archetypes of aggression on the 64
squares
Cafferty covers the career of the brilliantly aggressive and
stunningly speculative Soviet Grandmaster Boris Spassky through
where he conquers Petrosian, on to the celebrated match of the
century against the mercurial Bobby Fischer. Contains the very best
of Boris Spassky.
