Weighted Down: The Complicated Life of Skip Spence is scholar Cam
Cobb's biography on the legendary '60s cult musician. As a member
of era-defining bands Moby Grape, Quicksilver Messenger Service,
and Jefferson Airplane, Spence played a large part in setting the
agenda and aesthetic for many other groups of the era. His only
solo album, the hugely psychedelic and occasionally challenging
'Oar', cemented his reputation, and he has since gone on to be
celebrated by the likes of Tom Waits, Beck, and Robert Plant.
However, the musician's life was aggrieved by substance abuse,
erratic behaviour, and poor mental health. Cobb regards Spence's
life as a whole, warts and all, from his visionary recordings, to
his idiosyncratic personality and untimely death at the age of 52.
Moby Grape are a genuine cult phenomenon. Their story, a mixture of
myth and truth, is a cautionary tale, a triumph, and a tragedy all
at once. Though they are seen as a symbol of 1960s San Francisco,
Moby Grape were never actually a part of the city s counterculture
movement. Yet they were immersed in it, sharing stages with the
likes of Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, and many more.
Moby Grape s five members came together from very different
backgrounds, bursting onto the San Francisco scene in the fall of
1966. With their diverse pedigree, they were nothing less than
musical alchemists, yet they were also rebels. Their blending of
genres within a tight songwriting framework contrasted sharply with
that of many of their SF peers. Following the release of the band s
debut album in 1967, you could see everyone from Ringo Starr to
Jimi Hendrix sporting a `Moby Grape Now! button. But in the months
that followed, they were dogged by mismanagement, bad marketing, a
scandalous drug bust, and general rock n roll mayhem. It seemed
like it was all over in 1969, but in 1971 Moby Grape staged rock s
first full-on reunion. Since then, they have fought to retain
ownership of their own name, while two members of the band
struggled with homelessness and mental illness. Despite all of
this, they produced one of the best albums of the era, and today
they are heralded by countless luminaries of rock music and rock
criticism, from Robert Plant to Robert Christgau, Tom Waits to
Greil Marcus. Drawing on extensive interviews with the surviving
members of the band, What s Big and Purple and Lives in the Ocean?
finally tells the full story of one of the great cult bands of the
60s.
titularisation. Publie en Anglais.
The Academic Gateway: Understanding the Journey to Tenure
investigates the experiences of professors employed in tenure-track
positions who are starting their career within a university
environment, but have not yet attained the affirmation and
permanence that tenure offers. The role that they have taken on
entails the preparation of students within a professional school.
Some of them have very limited professional experience, while
others bring multiple years of experience with them in their
transition to a faculty of education. The contributors speak to the
three key components of their faculty role: teaching, service, and
research. Addressing organizational structures and differences
relative to prior roles, they examine how these changes have
assisted, confused or altered the way they conduct their day-to-day
work. They speak about relevant prior experiences, the preparation
they received through graduate school, and the details of the
learning curve as they entered into their tenure track role. Have
they been successful? The reader will experience the same
uncertainty and anticipation every professor goes through during
their journey to tenure. This approach amplifies the realism of not
knowing whether issues that are spoken about will ultimately be
overcome and enhances the validity of their experiences by not
biasing the contributions towards those who expect success.

For generations the elements of humor, poignancy, fantasy, and
unfettered morality found within acclaimed children s author Roald
Dahl s most famous tales have captivated both children and adults.
Classics like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the
Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Matilda, and The BFG may initially
appear to be yarns spun for the amusement of the adolescent mind,
however, upon digging deeper one uncovers a treasure trove of
philosophical richness that is anything but childish, but in fact
reveals the true existential weight, and multi-layered meaning of
some of our favorite children s stories. Editor Jacob M. Held has
collected the insights of today s leading philosophers into the
significances, messages, and greater truths at which Dahl s
rhythmic writing winks, revealing a whole new way to appreciate the
creation of a man and mind to which readers of all ages are still
drawn."
