Investigating how markets are becoming increasingly similar across
countries while simultaneously becoming more diverse and
heterogeneous within countries, this timely Handbook explores novel
and under-researched sub-cultural marketing segments. Contributions
from a diverse group of established and emerging marketing scholars
examine how we might better understand and serve new generations of
consumers from a variety of generational, ethnic, and religiously
diverse market segments. Cognisant of the cultural diversity within
cultures, the Handbook considers the ethical ramifications of
culture- and race-based targeting and segmentation, advancing a
culture-based marketing approach that addresses the similarities
and differences across groups while recognising the variety that
exists within them. Chapters explore a compelling array of topics,
from advocating for a departure from the white, Eurocentric, and
heteronormative ideals that dominate the global beauty industry and
investigating how Hip Hop's move into the mainstream raises
questions about authenticity and cultural appropriation, to
addressing the role played by religion in consumer behaviour and
mapping the diverse and complex markets of Latin America and Asia.
Featuring multidisciplinary research which builds towards a more
vibrant ethnic and sub-cultural marketing literature, this
compelling Handbook will inform and inspire the work of current and
future marketing scholars. It will also be an essential resource
for corporations interested in targeting ethnic and religious
marketing segments.
Disillusionment with globalization, along with a rise in
nationalist sentiment, may lead us to ask whether cross-cultural or
international research will be necessary in the coming years and,
if it is, what form it will take. While all international marketing
is cross-cultural, not all cross-cultural marketing is
international. Cultures are defined as groups of people who share a
common language, set of norms, institutions, beliefs and values.
There are many ways such groups can be defined - only one of which
is country. Regardless of the definition parameters, one thing
remains clear: cross-cultural marketing is a broad topic in today's
technological, always-connected world. This Handbook suggests
future directions for cross-cultural marketing research in a
rapidly evolving global environment. It builds upon existing models
and topics, addresses the methodological challenges of
cross-cultural research, and provides applied examples spanning
various methodologies as well as industry sectors and country
settings. In addition, contributors present new paradigms for
future research. Cross-cultural marketing research scholars, Ph.D.
students and cross-cultural and international marketing
practitioners will benefit from this thorough examination of
current trends as well as forward thinking concepts from some of
the field's foremost experts.
This timely book explores the relationship between Japan and the
European Union as they work increasingly closely together in many
areas of global governance. It discusses the most salient areas of
such cooperation from a range of perspectives, while examining not
just convergences but also differences. Written by experts from
both Europe and Japan, interdisciplinary chapters investigate both
actors' current approaches to global governance and multilateralism
as well as providing a historical perspective on their bilateral
relations. The book explores their cooperation in areas stretching
from trade and finance to security in light of the recent EU-Japan
Economic Partnership Agreement and Strategic Partnership Agreement.
Offering insights into their current relationship, it outlines
challenges for the future, and draws relevant lessons from the
history of global governance in Asia and Europe. Scholars of Asian
and European law with an interest in international governance and
regulation, and particularly those working in EU-Japan affairs,
will find this a significant and stimulating read. It will also be
useful for policy-makers in the EU and Japan working in
international security, trade, and economic, monetary and financial
policy.
This extraordinary debut heralds the arrival of a major new talent.
In After You Were, I Am, charged moments from history collide with
our own godless modern world. The book's three sections - ingenious
rewritings of canonical prayers, dramatic monologues from the
Pendle witch trials of 1612, and the divine tragedy of the
Elizabethan magus John Dee - obsess over individual human
characters and how our past informs (and informs on) our present.
Ralphs's style is utterly distinctive; she is a modern
metaphysical, tapping into a haunting, era-spanning utterance
enlivened by the electric pulse of wordplay and imaginative
conceit. This is poetry that in comprehending the past manages to
make of it something utterly original and contemporary.

An awkward young woman. A haunted young man. A forbidden
instrument. Can the love of music bring them together . . . or will
it tear them apart? Bath, England---1810 At twenty-eight, Alethea
Sutherton is past her prime for courtship; but social mores have
never been her forte. She might be a lady, but she is first and
foremost a musician. In Regency England, however, the violin is
considered an inappropriate instrument for a lady. Ostracized by
society for her passion, Alethea practices in secret and waits for
her chance to flee to the Continent, where she can play without
scandal. But when a thief s interest in her violin endangers her
and her family, Alethea is determined to discover the enigmatic
origins of her instrument . . . with the help of the dark, brooding
Lord Dommick. Scarred by war, Dommick finds solace only in playing
his violin. He is persuaded to help Alethea, and discovers an
entirely new yearning in his soul. Alethea finds her reluctant
heart drawn to Dommick in the sweetest of duets . . . just as the
thief s desperation builds to a tragic crescendo . . ."
Towards Identity in the Psychoanalytic Encounter addresses the
theme of identification and identity in the psychoanalytic clinic
as elaborated by Jacques Lacan over the course of his teaching. In
psychoanalysis the subject who is summoned “to speak himselfâ€,
is by definition lacking in identity. His question is “What am
I?†but, as he is only represented by his words, his being is
“always elsewhereâ€, within other words that are yet to come.
Thus a paradox: one seeks via speech the identity of a being who,
through his speech, is not identifiable. Yet the fact remains, he
has a body, and he is riveted to sufferings that psychoanalysis,
from Freud to Lacan, identified, which are not accidental, which we
call repetition and symptom, and which shift the question of
identity, because a One, real, is at play in them. Towards Identity
in the Psychoanalytic Encounter will be key reading for the study
and research of Lacanian psychoanalysis and all practitioners
interested in Lacan’s teaching, as well as other discourses such
as philosophy, art, literature and history.
As artists, they were self-taught and created a cosmos of images
that still captivates us today with its sensual immediacy and has
made a lasting mark in art history on the work of non-academically
trained artists: Henri Rousseau (1844-1910), Camille Bombois
(1883-1970), Andre Bauchant (1873-1958), Louis Vivin (1861-1939)
and Seraphine Louis (1864-1942). They are counted among the
so-called circle of the "painters of the sacred heart"; their
scenarios, often borrowed from nature, especially flowers and
fruits, but also people in parks and landscapes, indicate a
closeness to nature, a sensitive approach to the things of the
immediate environment, with which they apparently sought to escape
the coldness of uprising modernism. These French pioneers of
authentic art were discovered by the German art historian Wilhelm
Uhde (1874-1947), who organized their first joint exhibition in
Paris in 1928.

The Way of Mary, Maryam, Beloved of God is a weaving of strands
from ancient sources, traditional stories, poetry, and prayers of
Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, and beyond (with full colour
illustrations), to reveal, through the illuminated being and twelve
life stations of Beloved Mary, the palpable Oneness of all
Creation, our Oneness in Spirit. Drawing on passages from the
Quran, the Bible, poetry of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi and
inspirations of other mystics (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim),
classical Islamic sources and ancient Biblical texts, oral
traditions recorded by hearts across the centuries such as the
Protoevangelium of James and the Lives of the Prophets of
al-Tha‘labi, and Biblical apocrypha such as the Infancy Gospel of
Thomas, with awareness of all the elements of nature that rose up
in support of Beloved Mary through the stages of her journey,
Camille Helminski weaves together a fabric of love to embrace us
with healing and new life.
Located within the field of environmental humanities, this volume
engages with one of the most pressing contemporary environmental
challenges of our time: how can we shift our understanding and
realign what water means to us? Water is increasingly at the centre
of scientific and public debates about climate change. In these
debates, rising sea levels compete against desertification;
hurricanes and floods follow periods of prolonged drought. As we
continue to pollute, canalise and desalinate waters, the ambiguous
nature of our relationship with these entities becomes visible.
From the paradisiac and pristine scenery of holiday postcards
through to the devastated landscapes of post-tsunami news reports,
images of waters surround us. And while we continue to damage what
most sustains us, collective precarity grows. Breaking down
disciplinary boundaries, with contributions from scholars in the
visual arts, history, earth systems, anthropology, architecture,
literature and creative writing, archaeology and music, this edited
collection creates space for less-prominent perspectives, with many
authors coming from female, Indigenous and LGBTQIA+ contexts.
Combining established and emerging voices, and practice-led
research and critical scholarship, the book explores water across
its scientific, symbolic, material, imaginary, practical and
aesthetic dimensions. It examines and interrogates our cultural
construction and representation of water and, through original
research and theory, suggests ways in which we can reframe the
dialogue to create a better relationship with water sources in
diverse contexts and geographies. This expansive book brings
together key emerging scholarship on water persona and agency and
would be an ideal supplementary text for discussions on the blue
humanities, climate change, environmental anthropology and
environmental history.
In 1791, the French femme de lettres Olympe de Gouges wrote that
'as women have the right to take their places on the scaffold, they
must also have the right to take their seats in government'. This
book explores the issues of female emancipation through the history
of female execution, from the burning of Joan of Arc in 1431 to the
events of the French revolution. Concentrating on individual
victims, the author addresses the sexual attitudes and prejudices
encountered by women condemned to death. She examines the horrific
treatment of those denounced as witches and reveals the gruesome
reality of death by hanging, burning or the guillotine. In an
attempt to uncover the historical truth behind such figures as Joan
of Arc, Anne Boleyn, Manon Roland and Charlotte Corday, she goes
beyond biography to consider their deaths in symbolic terms. She
also considers writers such as Genet, Yourcenar and Brecht and
their treatment of the tragic, sacrificial and erotic aspects of
female execution.

Affirming Methodologies: Research and Education in the Caribbean
centres local and indigenous ways of knowing in research and
education praxis in the Caribbean. The research methodologies and
pedagogies are presented in this book within an Affirming
Methodologies framework. They bring forward localized
epistemologies whereby Caribbean ways of being and knowing are
affirmed, and the expected western hierarchies between researcher
and researched are removed. The chapters present approaches to
knowledge construction and knowledge sharing based on practices,
lived experiences, traditions, language patterns, and rituals of
Caribbean communities. The importance of an Affirming Methodologies
approach is demonstrated, and the characteristics of culturally
affirming research methodologies and pedagogies in diverse
environments including Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the
Caribbean diaspora in Aotearoa New Zealand and Canada are explored
and presented. Grounded on an understanding of the authors'
Caribbean positionality, ontological distinctions within the
Caribbean research context are considered. This book moves forward
from a decolonizing methodology approach, and, as such, the
chapters are written, not in opposition to, or tested against
Eurocentric approaches to research, but deeply rooted in a
Caribbean ethos. This book will engage researchers (both
qualitative and quantitative), postgraduate students, academics,
practitioners, policymakers, community workers, and lay persons who
seek to employ culturally relevant local and indigenous research
approaches in their work. Each chapter offers practical suggestions
on the 'how' of research practice, making them accessible,
relevant, and flexible for novice and seasoned researchers alike.
The customer is the only one who can fire all of us. -Sam Walton
Doing business in today's economy and surviving requires a new
paradigm. Who are at the center of this new approach to doing
business? CONSUMERS. Historically, power struggles have raged
between suppliers and distributors. Recently, both parties awakened
to the fact that neither of them has the ultimate power . . . it
now resides solely with the consumer. This valuable book describes
what demassification of the consumer market means and will show you
howand whybusinesses must adapt to succeed. Handy charts, tables,
and illustrations make the information easy to understand, and
fascinating sidebar quotations from well-known leaders of various
industriesSam Walton, Jack Welch, and many moregive the book a
unique and memorable flavor. Consumers, say the authors, not only
demand higher quality and lower prices, but also expect convenient,
quick, customized service. They expect in-stock conditions and
quality. They demand value and respect. Global markets mean large
numbers of consumers, but these consumers want to be treated as
individuals, and the mass market no longer exists. Companies in
industries from financial services to groceries to consumer goods
to health care to hardware to automobiles are adopting these new
business processes and winning in the marketplace. Their
competitors are falling by the wayside. This essential book:
examines the factors that are shaping the current business
environment and looks at the re-orientation of today's consumer,
presenting global perspectives on these vital issues explores this
new consumer-centric approach from the perspectives of suppliers,
intermediaries, and retailers, as well as the business processes
being used to create more efficient supply chains and more
effective demand fulfillment processes shows you the tools that can
be used to implement this new business paradigm in the areas of
technology, internal business processes, and collaboration answers
frequently asked questions shares the success stories of Rite Aid,
Southwest Airlines, Starbucks, Snap-On Tools, National
Semiconductor, and others! After addressing the issues of why
business must change and examining the significance of a global
business environment, The Consumer . . . or Else! addresses each
element of the new business paradigm: the new role of consumers
major players, including the shift in the business processes of
retailers and manufacturers and the role of intermediaries new
business processes, with a focus on technology, internal
coordination, and collaboration Companies from Dell Computer to Del
Monte are putting consumers first and reaping the sales benefits.
General Mills will soon provide consumers with the opportunity to
create and name their own custom cereal. As the authors point out,
The business process is changing-changing the way product flows,
the way information flows, and the way cash flows. Companies that
recognize this need to change will hold huge competitive
advantages, and the companies that fail to adapt will simply not be
here in the future. Let The Consumer . . . or Else!:
Consumer-Centric Business Paradigms be your guidebook to this
challenging new business climate.
