Complementary and Alternative Medicine - Knowledge Production and Social Transformation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Caragh... Complementary and Alternative Medicine - Knowledge Production and Social Transformation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Caragh Brosnan, Pia Vuolanto, Jenny-Ann Brodin Danell
R3,947 Discovery Miles 39 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines how complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) - as knowledge, philosophy and practice - is constituted by, and transformed through, broader social developments. Shifting the sociological focus away from CAM as a stable entity that elicits perceptions and experiences, chapters explore the forms that CAM takes in different settings, how global social transformations elicit varieties of CAM, and how CAM philosophies and practices are co-produced in the context of social change. Through engagement with frameworks from Science and Technology Studies (STS), CAM is reconceptualised as a set of practices and knowledge-making processes, and opened up to new forms of analysis. Part 1 of the book explores how and why boundaries within CAM and between CAM and other health practices, are being constructed, challenged and changed. Part 2 asks how CAM as material practice is shaped by politics and regulation in a range of national settings. Part 3 examines how evidence is being produced and used in CAM research and practice. Including studies of CAM in Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, and North and South America, the volume will appeal to postgraduate students, researchers and health practitioners.

Handbook of the Sociology of Medical Education (Paperback): Caragh Brosnan, Bryan S. Turner Handbook of the Sociology of Medical Education (Paperback)
Caragh Brosnan, Bryan S. Turner
R1,338 Discovery Miles 13 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Handbook of the Sociology of Medical Education provides a contemporary introduction to this classic area of sociology by examining the social origin and implications of the epistemological, organizational and demographic challenges facing medical education in the twenty-first century.

Beginning with reflections on the historical and theoretical foundations of the sociology of medical education, the collection then focuses on current issues affecting medical students, the profession and the faculty, before exploring medical education in different national contexts.

Leading sociologists analyze: the intersection of medical education and social structures such as gender, ethnicity and disability; the effect of changes in medical practice, such as the emergence of evidence-based medicine, on medical education; and the ongoing debates surrounding the form and content of medical curricula. By examining applied problems within a framework which draws from social theorists such as Pierre Bourdieu, this new collection suggests future directions for the sociological study of medical education and for medical education itself.

Bourdieusian Prospects (Paperback): Lisa Adkins, Caragh Brosnan, Steven Threadgold Bourdieusian Prospects (Paperback)
Lisa Adkins, Caragh Brosnan, Steven Threadgold
R1,262 Discovery Miles 12 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bourdieusian Prospects considers the ongoing relevance of Bourdieu's social theory for contemporary social science. Breaking with the tendency to reflect on Bourdieu's legacies, it brings established and emergent scholars together to debate the futures of a specifically Bourdieusian sociology. Driven by a central leitmotif in Bourdieu's oeuvre, namely, that his work not be blindly appropriated but actively interpreted, contributors to this volume set out to map the potentials of Bourdieusian inflected social science. While for many social scientists the empirical and theoretical developments of the twenty-first century mark a limit point of Bourdieusian social theory, this collection charts both how and why a Bourdieusian sociology has a future, which is crucial for the ongoing development and roll out of an engaged, relevant and critical social science.
