Jorge D. Rios, Alma Y. Alanis, Nancy Arana-Daniel, Carlos Lopez-Franco; Series edited by Edgar N. Sanchez
R3,007 Discovery Miles 30 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Neural Networks Modelling and Control: Applications for Unknown Nonlinear Delayed Systems in Discrete Time focuses on modeling and control of discrete-time unknown nonlinear delayed systems under uncertainties based on Artificial Neural Networks. First, a Recurrent High Order Neural Network (RHONN) is used to identify discrete-time unknown nonlinear delayed systems under uncertainties, then a RHONN is used to design neural observers for the same class of systems. Therefore, both neural models are used to synthesize controllers for trajectory tracking based on two methodologies: sliding mode control and Inverse Optimal Neural Control. As well as considering the different neural control models and complications that are associated with them, this book also analyzes potential applications, prototypes and future trends.

Routledge Handbook of Social Futures (Hardcover): Emily Spiers, Carlos Lopez Galviz Routledge Handbook of Social Futures (Hardcover)
Emily Spiers, Carlos Lopez Galviz
R6,209 Discovery Miles 62 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Featuring chapters from an international range of leading and emerging scholars, this Handbook provides a collection of cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research that sheds new light on contemporary futures studies. Engaging with key defining questions of the early twenty-first century such as climate change, big data, AI, the future of economics, education, mental health, cities and more, the Handbook provides a review and synthesis of futures scholarship, highlighting the role that societies can and should play in their making. While the various chapters demonstrate how futures emerge and take shape in particular places at particular times, the distinctive insight provided by the volume overall is that futures thinking today must be social and contextual. By presenting a range of futures work from contexts around the globe, the Handbook contextualizes techniques - forecasting, backcasting, scenario planning, collaboration and co-production- to ask how different dimensions of the social are created and circulated in the process. Through its thirty chapters, the volume explores and interrogates narratives, anticipations, enactments, ecologies, collaborations, prospections and so on to highlight which versions of the social are legitimized and which are encouraged and foreclosed. This Handbook opens an important conversation about the centrality of the social in futures thinking. By bringing arts, humanities and social sciences scholars and practitioners into conversation with biologists, environmental, climate and computer scientists, this volume seeks to encourage new pathways across, between and within multiple disciplines to interrogate the futures we need and want. The social must be our starting point if we are to steer our planet in a direction that supports good lives for the many, everywhere.

Carlos Lopes, Abdalla Hamdok, Adam Elhiraika
R3,993 Discovery Miles 39 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The main objective of this book is to identify the key sources of growth which have played a significant role in Africa's recent robust growth as well as its efforts towards economic transformation. The book assesses to what extent the existing macroeconomic frameworks among African countries have been streamlined to the countries' development priorities in order to achieve long-term growth and economic transformation. Taking into account the diversity of African countries, the authors establish the economic linkages between relevant macroeconomic policy variables and the key sources of growth and development among the selected African economies, based on both theoretical and empirical underpinnings. Following this, an outline of a macroeconomic framework for Africa's long-term growth and economic transformation is suggested.

Cities, Railways, Modernities - London, Paris, and the Nineteenth Century (Paperback): Carlos Lopez Galviz Cities, Railways, Modernities - London, Paris, and the Nineteenth Century (Paperback)
Carlos Lopez Galviz
R1,384 Discovery Miles 13 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cities, Railways, Modernities chronicles the transformation that London and Paris experienced during the nineteenth century through the lens of the London Underground and the Paris Metro. By highlighting the multiple ways in which the future of the two cities was imagined and the role that railways played in that process, it challenges and refines two of the most dominant myths of urban modernity: A planned Paris and an unplanned London. The book recovers a significant body of work around the ideas, the plans, the context and the building of metropolitan railways in the two cities to provide new insights into the relationship of transport technologies and urban change during the nineteenth century.

Las Juderias (English, Spanish, Hardcover): Carlos Lopez Dzur Las Juderias (English, Spanish, Hardcover)
Carlos Lopez Dzur
R972 Discovery Miles 9 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

'The United Nations system was a pioneer in the field of technical cooperation, and capacity development is its central mandate. UNDP has long played an important leadership role in both, as a source of technical cooperation funds and advisory services and as the home of innovative intellectual research and analysis on how to make them more efficient and effective. This book presents] a vision that builds on new possibilities for knowledge-sharing, for which the revolution in information and communications technologies offers ample opportunities... a vision that is firmly founded on genuine ownership by the ultimate beneficiaries of development efforts: the government and citizens of developing countries' From the Foreword by MARK MALLOCH BROWN, Administrator, UNDP Capacity for Development brings together innovative and well-supported studies of technical cooperation along with its potential to build sustainable capacities in developing countries, by enhancing the knowledge, skills and productive aptitudes of their populations. A team of eminent development professionals and economists examine the achievements of technical cooperation and offer recommendations for reform in the context of globalization, democratisation, the information revolution and the growth of capacities in the South. They analyse the issues from three perspectives: ownership, capacity enablers and knowledge. The team show how the complex processes involved can be restructured to produce local involvement and empowerment, set out a normative framework for the input from society, and describe a new paradigm of knowledge for capacity building in the network age. This book will be essential reading for all development professionals and policy-makers, as well as providing an invaluable research and teaching resource.

Structural Change in Africa - Misperceptions, New Narratives and Development in the 21st Century (Paperback): Carlos Lopes,... Structural Change in Africa - Misperceptions, New Narratives and Development in the 21st Century (Paperback)
Carlos Lopes, George Kararach
R1,278 Discovery Miles 12 780 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Debates on African development continue to downplay the achievement of the continent: economic achievements are diminished and the perception of a conflict prone continent continues. Many of the policy prescriptions externally imposed on African countries have done little to transform the continent largely because they have been conceived and applied without context. Using literature from diverse origins, this book expands our knowledge about Africa and makes practical suggestions as to how successful development in a complex, yet dynamic continent can be achieved. Widening the policy dialogue and providing alternative thinking on the key elements and full extent of opportunities and challenges towards achieving the socio-economic transformation of Africa, the book moves the debate from the rhetoric to reality. As a considered reflection on the 'Africa's transformation' narrative, it outlines the practical pathways necessary for Africa's sustainable development, providing policy makers and researchers with tested solutions. It will be of interest to all scholars, students and policy professionals working in African development, public policy, international political economy, economic policy and politics.

Africa's Contemporary Challenges - The Legacy of Amilcar Cabral (Hardcover, New): Carlos Lopes Africa's Contemporary Challenges - The Legacy of Amilcar Cabral (Hardcover, New)
Carlos Lopes
R4,204 Discovery Miles 42 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book reviews Cabral s intellectual contribution to current debates on race, identity, nation building, democracy, leadership and ethics. The key leader of the national liberation movements of former Portuguese African colonies is considered to be one of their foremost intellectuals the continent has produced. This rare combination of freedom fighter, operational campaigner and astute political scientist justifies the academic interest in his contribution.

Africa's Contemporary Challenges reviews the impact of Amilcar Cabral s thinking, and its relationship with contemporary debates about race, identity, nation building, democracy, leadership or ethics. The complexity of Cabral s vision and hopes for Africa continues to incite curiosity and interest. Cabral's tragic assassination in 1973 has removed the possibility of analysing his impact on post-independent Lusophone Africa, but his thoughts continue to be the most important reference.

This book was published as a special issue of African Identities.

R1,549 Discovery Miles 15 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The third and final in a series, this text bridges the conceptual foundations of capacity development and the difficulties and practical realities in the field. It demystifies the process of capacity development to make it more "user-friendly".;The book has two parts. The first shows how long-standing development dilemmas can be turned into opportunities for capacity development and societal transformation. It proposes a set of principles to guide the search for context-specific approaches as the norm, and based on these default principles the authors explore relevant issues in comprehensible stages through a capacity lens.;The second part is a compilation of experiences and lessons from around the world, to showcase promising initiatives and innovative solutions. It forms a casebook of insights and good (rather than best) practices on how development stakeholders can turn development dilemmas into opportunities tailored to the needs of their societies.

Molecular Mechanisms of Spondyloarthropathies (Paperback, 2009 ed.): Carlos Lopez-Larrea, Roberto Diaz-Pena Molecular Mechanisms of Spondyloarthropathies (Paperback, 2009 ed.)
Carlos Lopez-Larrea, Roberto Diaz-Pena
R5,156 Discovery Miles 51 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

It is now over ten years since we edited the first edition of HLA-B27 in the Development of Spondyloarthropathies (SpA). It is obvious that over this period an enormous amount of information concerning SpA and HLA-B27 has accumulated, and this has been reflected in the knowledge of molecular mechanism of the spondyloarthropathies. Discussion for such a book took initial form at the outstanding 4th Gent Symposium on SpA in October 2006, but was not formally commissioned by Landes Bioscience until early 2007. Molecular Mechanisms of Spondyloarthropathies aims to synthesize this growing knowledge and present all the current studies concerning the basic research of SpA. Over the last decade, enormous progress has been made in the understanding of the molecular and cellular processes that lead to disease pathology. Recognition of the pathways involved in the pathogenic mechanisms of disease and the potential to target specific immune effector functions have opened the door to a wide range of innovative treatment opportunities for the SpA. Thus, we believe that the understanding of the specific molecular mechanisms involved would help to design highly specific drugs in the future. The contributors are among the best in their field and reflect the state of the art of research and current opinion of rheumatologists and immunologists.

Carlos Lopez, Bernard Roizman
R1,480 Discovery Miles 14 800 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

'You damn sadist/said mr cummings 'you try to make people think. ' -Ezra Pound (Canto 89) What makes herpesviruses unique? It is certainly not the size of their genomes or the individual features of their reproductive cycle, although in toto striking features that are exclusive to the herpesviruses abound. Unquestionably, the pre-eminent feature is the relationship of herpes viruses with their natural hosts. As described in preceding volumes, all herpesviruses seem to be able to colonize and to remain in a latent, nonproductive form for life of their hosts. Once established in the host, the relationship is best described as that of an armed truce. What happens when this truce breaks down or when the host encounters the virus for the first time is the subject of this volume. We have focused primarily on the five human herpesviruses herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-l), herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella zoster virus (VZV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)] because much more is known about them than about any other herpesviruses, and because it is of interest to compare both the diversity of manifestations of infections with human herpesviruses and the spectrum of human responses to these viruses. This volume summarizes the current knowledge of the pathogenesis and immunobiology of herpesvirus infections in man and describes new and developing approaches to prophylaxis and treatment. It contains con tributions from distinguished research scientists presently engaged at the forefront of these scientific investigations."
