"Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! have nothing on Rose, at home in a thicket of menacing creatures."—Choice
We have always conjured up creatures never seen in nature, from flying horses and two-headed birds to fire-breathing dragons and enormous killer skunks, as well as fantastic distortions of our own image, from giants to nubile maidens. In these pages you will meet extraordinary beings from Hindu and Navajo religions, Scandinavian tales, Russian folklore, Lithuanian stories, Irish oral history, American tall tales, and Aztec myth. Just some of the monstrous entourage: • Baku, a benevolent Japanese monster with the body of a horse, the head of a lion, and the legs of a tiger, who helps people by devouring their nightmares. • Kurma, the giant tortoise of Hindu myth, whose upper shell forms the heavens and lower part the earth. • Missipissy, the feared fish serpent of North America's Great Lakes region.
This illustrated encyclopedia not only identifies and describes individual beasts in their cultural context but also groups them together across cultures and discusses common mythological strands and conceits. 60 b/w illustrations.
By bridging the gap between conventional medical interventions and
complementary approaches using aromatherapy, palliative care nurse
and clinical aromatherapist, Carol Rose, demonstrates how an
integrated and evidence-based approach can have the most
significant impact on quality-of-life in patients with
life-limiting illness. Aromatherapy is already a fundamental
practice in many palliative care settings but its benefits remain
under-researched and under-represented. Each chapter of this book
incorporates a person-centred focus to consider the integration of
various aromatherapy approaches for a range of end-of-life
symptoms, alongside conventional medical options. The specificity
of this approach and the emphasis of empowering patients to be
involved in the process of choosing oils and applications, allows
for improved results in the palliation of common symptoms.
Integrating Clinical Aromatherapy in Palliative Care has a
foundation in research from the patient's point of view. The result
is a fresh perspective that prioritises support of patient choices,
skilful communication and individualised care, alongside the
judicious use of essential oils and other botanical products.
Collectively, aromatherapy can completely reframe holistic care to
allow for greater emotional, social and spiritual expression.
Unlike her first book of poetry, Behind the Blue Gate (l997), which
used place to access reality, Carol Rose's From the Dream invites
us to draw upon memory, loss, death, friendship and love in an
attempt to give shape to our lives. Dreams, like the spiritual
realm, shift perspective, urging us to move between the worlds of
waking and imaginal realities. In this strangely familiar terrain,
perceptions are challenged. We sense the power of images, believing
that if we can grab hold of them, wrest meaning from them, then
(regardless of how bewildering they may seem) we can be blessed by
them. "Carol Rose calls up her spiritual lineages, and dares the
reader to go travelling with her, through dream, memory, spirit,
and the landed body, toward the wisdom of self-understanding. Her
poetic journey spirals back and forth through time, from the
ancient path of priestess, to home and family, to her own Jewish
heritage and identity." - Katherine Bitney, author of The Boreal
Dragon: Encounters with a Northern Land and Firewalk "In From the
Dream, Carol Rose views her life from a mystical perspective. Here
there are angels to interact with, the Shekhinah to guide her, and
fate and meaning in everything that occurs. Drawing on
'words/waiting to be exhumed, ' she creates poems that fulfill
their ancient role as spells, prophecies, and 'ancient utterances.'
" - Howard Schwartz, author of The Library of Dreams: New and
Selected Poems 1965-2013
Desperate to repair the damage her boss' dog did to the woman's
home while Addison Montgomery was dog- and house-sitting, Addy
calls on Roy's Rent-A-Hubby. But the man who meets her at Miriam's
front door is nothing like the tool-belt schlepping Roy she'd
expected. Sardonic, opinionated and melt-in-your-mouth sexy, her
Mr. Fix-it both annoys and arouses Addy. Unbeknownst to her, Mr.
Fix-it's name isn't really Roy and he's only picked up his
woodworking tools recently. He's Noah Pierce, a burned-out
stockbroker, who's gone back to the simple life and he thinks Addy
is crazy to chase after the hollow goal of success.
