Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not

"Nurse, what is the name of that pretty creature you have in your
hand? What bright eyes it has! What a soft tail - just like a gray
feather! Is it a little beaver?" asked the Governor's little
daughter, as her nurse came into the room where her young charge,
whom we shall call Lady Mary, was playing with her doll. Carefully
sheltered against her breast, its velvet nose just peeping from
beneath her muslin neckerchief, the nurse held a small gray-furred
animal, of the most delicate form and colour.
Catharine Parr Traill (1802 99) was a writer, botanist and settler
who emigrated from England to Canada with her husband in 1832. Both
she and her sister, Susanna Moodie, became well known for their
writing on settler life: Traill is also the author of The Backwoods
of Canada and The Canadian Settler's Guide. This 1885 publication
is the most comprehensive of her botanical works. Plants are
grouped together by family and the book is divided into four
sections: native flowers, flowering shrubs, forest trees and native
ferns. Written to inspire the Canadian public to share her passion
for the plant life of their country, the book has an engaging style
where anecdotes and literary quotations appear alongside detailed
descriptions and classification information. Traill's niece, Agnes
Chamberlin, is the book's illustrator. A beautiful example of
nineteenth-century popular botany, this book will appeal to anyone
interested in the history of the subject.

Comprising a substantial part of living biomass on earth, ants are
integral to the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. More than
12,500 species have been described to date, and it is estimated
that perhaps as many still await classification.
Ant Ecology explores key ecological issues and new developments in
myrmecology across a range of scales. The book begins with a global
perspective on species diversity in time and space, and examines
interactions at the community level before describing the
population ecology of these social insects. The final section
covers the recent ecological phenomenon of invasive ants: how they
move across the globe, invade, affect ecosystems, and are managed
by humans. Each chapter links ant ecology to broader ecological
principles, provides a succinct summary, and discusses future
research directions. Practical aspects of myrmecology, applications
of ant ecology, debates, and novel discoveries are highlighted in
text boxes throughout the volume. The book concludes with a
synthesis of the current state of the field and a look at exciting
future research directions. The extensive reference list and full
glossary are invaluable for researchers, and those new to the
field.
