Ion Channels - From Structure to Function (Hardcover): James Kew, Ceri Davies Ion Channels - From Structure to Function (Hardcover)
James Kew, Ceri Davies
R7,163 Discovery Miles 71 630 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Ion channels are intimately involved in the everyday physiological functions that enable us to live a full and varied life. When disease strikes, malfunction of ion channels or their dependent is often involved, either as the cause or the effect of the illness. Thus, billions of dollars have been, and still are being, invested in research to understand the physiological and pathophysiological functions of ion channels in an attempt to develop novel therapeutic treatments for a wide range of diseases.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of ion channel structure and function. It comprises two major parts. Part one is an introductory overview of the ion channel superfamily and the generic aspects of ion channel function. This part also reviews the methodologies by which ion channel function can be studied from the perspective of performing detailed biophysical characterization through to the deployment of high throughput approaches for identifying novel ion channel ligands.
Part two of the book provides an in-depth review of the individual ion channel subfamilies and, as such, is subdivided into four broad sections: Voltage-Gated Ion Channels, Extracellular Ligand-Gated Ion Channels, Intracellular Ligand-Gated Ion Channels, and Polymodal-Gated Ion Channels, with each chapter focused on specific family members. These chapters have been written by world leading experts and provide a detailed overview of the structure, biophysics, localization, pharmacology, physiology, and disease relevance of each particular ion channel subfamily.
Reviewing both the basic principles of ion channel function and providing a detailed up-to-date review of the phsyiological and pharmacological aspects of individual ion channel sub-families, this book constitutes both an excellent introduction to the field for non-specialists, as well as a highly valuable reference text for experienced researchers already working in the ion channel area.

R3,513 Discovery Miles 35 130 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Cyber Litigation: The Legal Principles brings together the existing legal principles in this rapidly developing area of law whilst at the same time considering the latest challenges facing practitioners and corporate advisers. The authors have surveyed the legal landscape to identify bespoke approaches to the issues involved. The book looks at the most common causes of action in cyber litigation, including 'cybercrime', IP, data protection breaches, and conflict of laws considerations. It analyses the situations where cyber-related litigation requires a new approach and looks at the remedies available. It covers cyber litigation and regulatory enforcement action, as well as alternatives to litigation such as the NCA Prevent scheme, Deferred Prosecution Agreements and Civil Recovery. It describes situations where arbitration or mediation are mandated, as well as online dispute resolution and technology powered alternatives to traditional determination. Readers will benefit from the use of flowcharts, tables, checklists and case studies to provide a clear understanding of the processes involved, as well as legal analysis of significant cases, an insight into what constitutes 'data', and legal analysis and commentary on potential legal arguments that may arise in cyber litigation. Cyber Litigation: The Legal Principles is an essential title for all practitioners involved in commercial disputes, information technology professionals, data protection officers, compliance staff and technologists with a legal interest.

Gruffudd ap Cynan - A Collaborative Biography (Hardcover): K.L. Maund Gruffudd ap Cynan - A Collaborative Biography (Hardcover)
K.L. Maund; Contributions by Ceri Davies, Chris Lewis, David E. Thornton, David J. Moore, …
R2,350 Discovery Miles 23 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The life, career and medieval biography of Gruffudd ap Cynan, king of Gwynedd 1095-1137. The reign of the North Welsh king Gruffudd ap Cynan [1075-1135] marked the culmination of a century of rapid social and political change. A product of three cultures [Welsh, Irish and Scandinavian], Gruffudd faced a Wales dividedby Norman incursion and dynastic rivalry; his re-creation of his kingdom saw him acting on the wider (and often deadly) stage of Anglo-Norman politics, and surviving where more `traditional' Welsh rulers failed. His reign encouraged a new growth in Welsh literature and creativity, and is often looked upon as a literary `golden age'. This collaborative biography analyses key aspects of the career and context of this remarkable king. Dr K.L. MAUNDteaches in the School of History and Archaeology, University of Wales, Cardiff. Other contributors: DAVID MOORE, C.P. LEWIS, DAVID E. THORNTON, K.L. MAUND, JUDITH JESCH, NERYS ANN JONES, CERI DAVIES, J.E. CAERWYN WILLIAMS
