The Air Force relies on the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test
(AFOQT) as part of its officer selection process. Despite concerns
about the test, the authors conclude that it is a good selection
test that predicts important Air Force outcomes and is not biased
against minorities or women. The Air Force would not benefit by
replacing the AFOQT with the SAT, although other valid selection
tools could be used to complement the AFOQT.
The Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) is a measure of how much
students' critical thinking improves after attending college or
university. This report illustrates how institutions can set their
own standards on the CLA using a method that is appropriate for the
CLA's unique characteristics.
Air Force members who do not routinely cross a defended perimeter
when deployed may not have received sufficient training for doing
so when they need to. The authors conducted surveys and interviews
to determine the kinds of experiences airmen have had "outside the
wire," worked with subject-matter experts to categorize them and
suggest training levels, and developed a series of recommendations
for course content and further areas for study.
