Different Childhoods: Non/Normative Development and Transgressive
Trajectories opens up new avenues for exploring children's
development as contextual, provisional and locally produced, rather
than a unitary, universal and consistent process. This edited
collection frames a critical exploration of the trajectory against
which children are seen to be 'different' within three key themes:
deconstructing 'developmental tasks', locating development and the
limits of childhood. Examining the particular kinds of
'transgressive' development, contributors discuss instances of
'difference' including migration, work, assumptions of
vulnerability, trans childhoods, friendships and involvement in
crime. Including both empirical and theoretical discussions, the
book builds on existing debates as part of the interrogation of
'different childhoods'. This book provides essential reading for
students wishing to explore notions of development while also being
of interest to both academics and practitioners working across a
broad area of disciplines such as developmental psychology,
sociology, childhood studies and critical criminology.
There are some things that many of us take for granted - such as
knowing when we are hot or cold, feel hungry, or need to go to the
toilet. But how do we know these things, and why do some people
struggle to recognise them? Interoception - the ability to identify
and act on physical sensations inside the body - is crucial to
human well-being. It underpins physical developmental milestones,
such as toilet-training, as well emotional ones, such as the
ability to self-regulate. Research shows that Autism often
co-occurs with poor interoceptive sense. This practical and
informative book demystifies interoception and provides tools to
help boost interoceptive abilities. It summarises the latest
research, explores how interoceptive difficulties can be
identified, suggests strategies to manage feelings and emotions,
and explains how to support individuals in 'tuning in' to
themselves.
This book explores social media and technology across the lifespan.
The authors argue that those of different ages and life stages have
very diverse experiences with these types of media and demonstrate
the importance of analysing the entire lifespan in the context of
technology use. They acknowledge and celebrate social media for the
positives that it can bring to our lives but also recognise that
there may be challenges for particular developmental stages.
This edited volume highlights relevant issues and solutions for
diversity groups within the workplace. It explores issues of
identity as they relate to attributes of gender, age, migrant
labor, disability, and power in social spaces. Identity is rarely
well-defined in many social spaces, and understandings that define
belonging are often developed through the normative expectations of
others. Having an evidence-based approach in addressing these
relevant issues, this book will appeal to academics and
practitioners alike looking for practical and theoretical solutions
to improving the situations of these groups in paid employment.
