Too often we see reality in black and white, overlooking nuances
that require the discernment of tensions between the brokenness of
our world and our desires for reconciliation. Yet the gap between
wounding words and actions and the hope for acts of reconciliation
can lead to even more violence and despair. The authors of this
volume explore these tensions and the valences of 'brokenness' and
'reconciliation' in Paul Tillich's thought. Together, they
contribute to a richer understanding of the thought of the German
American theologian and philosopher, his commitments, and the
constructive interpretations his work can induce for us today.
Think of the ruptures and efforts of dialogue among divided
Christian churches, or the commitment of the social worker; reflect
on how love as agape, or the courage to be, can be at the heart of
this constructive work; or consider the reconciliation processes of
peoples torn apart by violence, to mention a few contributions from
this volume. Collectively, these contributions raise the hope of a
Tillichian creative justice, a hope that can stimulate a broad
audience to go beyond the superficiality and instantaneity of
social media to something deeper, more enduring, and
transformative.
Rudolf Otto grounded his concept of religion in the experience of
the sacred. His perspective offered and continues to offer a major
impetus for contemporary debates in theology, the philosophy of
religion, religious aesthetics, and religious studies. This volume
documents important insights from contemporary readings of Otto in
an international perspective.
In this volume, the author presents a comprehensive account of Paul
Tillich's theology. Starting from the concept of freedom, Tillich's
theology is interpreted as a structural theory of the finite
implementation of freedom. Within this perspective of the problem,
its systematic structures and particular form of rationality are
reconstructed, together with the historical background to the
problem.
This volume examines the complex intersections between religion and
enlightenment from a historical and systematic perspective, and for
the first time, shows the profound implications of the works of
Schleiermacher, Troeltsch, and Tillich for understanding
religious-cultural pluralism in our times. The authors use these
sources to discuss the difficulties and challenges facing
contemporary enlightened religion as well as the limitations of
religious enlightenment.
vorliegende Band diskutiert Tillichs Kulturtheologie erstmals in
einer umfassenden werk- und problemgeschichtlichen Perspektive.
The volume contains ten historical theological studies tracing the
significance of Luther for Protestant religious culture (mainly in
the German-speaking world) since the Reformation. The approach
taken is one of the history of reception: selected positions in
modern Protestantism are identified as different forms of reception
of Luther's theology. In the background is the view that at present
a productive systematic theological approach to Luther's theology
primarily requires a detailed consideration of a new Protestant
religious culture.
One of the major trends in the psychology of religion is the
growing interest in religious and spiritual meaning making in
relation to religious and spiritual transformation processes,
notably as the aftermath of traumatic experiences and in situations
of crisis, stress or disease when personal well-being is at stake
and coping activities and skills are enhanced. This volume covers
this broad and complex area of interrelated issues. The
contributions focus on religious and spiritual meaning making and
transformation. They do not compose an integrated perspective on
religious meaning making and transformation processes. Rather, this
volume assembles and presents the current state of research on this
complex of issues. Thus it not only provides an excellent overview
of the psychological study of constructs of meaning and religious
transformation, but also contributes to our knowledge of
contemporary religious life in the context of socio-cultural
transformation processes (pluralisation, globalization).
wollen.
