Kevin is a sometimes-violent teenager with severe emotional disturbance in a family environment of poverty and stress. In this ethnography of a children's mental health care team, communication scholar Christine S. Davis delves deeply into how members of the team create hope for themselves, for Kevin, and for his family using a strengths orientation and future focus. A rich, evocative narrative that highlights multiple voices and interpretations, Davis provides a multilayered study of how social service workers can motivate and heal troubled families in challenging environments. The volume includes clinical and practice considerations for those working in the social welfare system

Topological defects have recently become of great interest in condensed matter physics, particle physics and cosmology. They are the unavoidable remnants of many symmetry breaking phase transitions. Topological defects can play an important role in describing the properties of many condensed matter systems (e.g. superfluids and superconduc tors); they can catalyze many unusual effects in particle physics models and they may be responsible for seeding the density perturbations in the early Universe which de velop into galaxies and the large-scale structure of the Universe. Topological defects are also of great interest in mathematics as nontrivial solutions of nonlinear differential equations stabilized by topological effects. The purpose of the Advanced Study Institute "Formation and Interactions of Topo logical Defects" was to bring together students and practitioners in condensed matter physics, particle physics and cosmology, to give a detailed exposition of the role of topo logical defects in these fields; to explore similarities and differences in the approaches; and to provide a common basis for discussion and future collaborative research on common problems.
"A Giant for Justice" tells the amazing true story of legendary educator and retired president of the Washington Teachers' Union, William H. "Bill" Simons. He accomplished dozens of great strides for teachers' rights and made a long and lasting impact on scores of educators, students, and parents during his twenty-five years of service. Compassionately told by one of the teachers who worked with him, this compelling biography showcases Bill's vision, efforts, and achievements, including strikes and walkouts to Congress, in which the author, herself, participated. The biography features reprints of official correspondence from Bills' desk, dozens of stunning photographs spanning Bill's life, and other archival documents. Also included at the end of the book are two chapters dedicated to tributes written to Bill by some of the many friends, family, former students, and colleagues whose lives he impacted. Not just a heartwarming account celebrating the life and accomplishments of a great man, "A Giant for Justice" serves as a prototype for other unions to expand and enhance their successes. Generations of union leaders to come can turn to this book for a concise statement of Bill's work and use it to guide them in their own pursuit of justice.
A guide to all aspects of leadership, for any student who wants to become a supervisor or manager in the tourism and hospitality industry. The main focus is on managing workplace operations. Emphasis is also placed on the management of staff, including job design, selection and training, and monitoring workplace performance. The book also deals with policies and procedures in detail, including occupational health and safety.
