Heidi Lee Schnackenberg, Christine Johnson
R4,723 Discovery Miles 47 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Generation Z views participatory technological interfaces as an integral part of their lives. Every experience in which they engage, particularly schooling, is viewed and experienced through that highly technological lens. At no other time in higher education has the nature of teaching and learning experiences been so defined by the technological interactivity of its student population. Thus, higher education needs to change to meet the needs of the incoming groups of students and expand upon ways in which they learn, communicate, and experience information. Preparing the Higher Education Space for Gen Z is an essential scholarly publication that delves into the specific challenges, issues, strategies, and solutions that are associated with using participatory social media, virtual communication, and other Web 2.0 innovations in higher education, and its particular implications for Generation Z. Including topics such as digital participation, learning environments, and mobile technologies, this book is ideally designed for higher education faculty, administrators, counselors, professionals, students, researchers, and academicians.

Curtis L Ivery, Christine Johnson Mcphail; Foreword by Cornel West
R1,958 R1,392 Discovery Miles 13 920 Save R566 (29%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is a collection of essays about urban community college leaders' experiences during the COVID-19 era and racial injustice protests of 2020. The result is a wide range of content from political commentary to leadership advice-all through the unique perspectives of African Americans leading some of the country's biggest educational institutions with the greatest potential for redressing a system of "interlocking injustices" that has evolved and persisted for more than 400 years. While our institutions and constituencies were disproportionately impacted by these events, we believe that urban community colleges are also at the forefront of transformative solutions for the underlying social-equity issues that are most pronounced in the nation's biggest cities.

Transformational Change in Community Colleges - Becoming an Equity-Centered Higher Education Institution (Paperback): McPhail,... Transformational Change in Community Colleges - Becoming an Equity-Centered Higher Education Institution (Paperback)
McPhail, Christine Johnson, Beatty, Kimberly; Foreword by Bumphus, Walter G.
R977 Discovery Miles 9 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

From the foreword by Walter G. Bumphus, President &CEO of AACC: "Becoming an Equity-Centered Higher Education Institution is a significant contribution to the on-going struggle to find practical approaches to implementing an equity agenda in higher education." The authors had three main goals for this text: Relevance: This book is the result of many years of teaching, leading, researching, and coaching individuals and institutions about equity inside higher education. The authors place a clear emphasis on awareness and teaching skills first, but also ensure that those skills are based on practical application in the field. Practical Application: To describe and explain equity and transformational change concepts, this book provides step-by-step implementation approaches that can be used to integrate equity-centered principles into practices and policies to implement or improve equity work into the organizational culture. A Purposeful Approach: The authors defined the act of becoming an equity-centered institution in terms of a transformational change approach using Kotter's Eight-Stage Process. Kotter's Model and AACC's Leadership Competencies for Community College Leaders are introduced in Chapter 1 and integrated throughout the book. This integrated framework allows practitioners to place the intersectionality of equity, transformational change, and requisite leadership competencies into the larger context of higher education. While using Kotter's 8-Step Change Model, the authors emphasize that operations and situations inside higher educational institutions are not linear as implied in Kotter's model. They show how the stages of change may occur at different times and different situations at different institutions, and demonstrate what leadership competencies are recommended for each stage in the change process.

Model on Child Abuse and Neglect (Paperback): Christine Johnson Model on Child Abuse and Neglect (Paperback)
Christine Johnson
R452 Discovery Miles 4 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Child abuse and neglect has been in an all time high in the state where Christine Johnson lives. Not only is it prevalent amongst civilian, but also within the military population. The children affected were from all races and all ages. Sometimes there were infants, a few hours old, found in the trashcans in alleys, on in a trash bags side the highway, or sometimes left at the police station, health department or the hospital. Most parents were teen mothers. These mothers were living at home with their parent(s). Even though some of the teen moms lived at home, majority lived in public housing communities. With these factors in mind, there were other siblings already in the home, with the mother receiving food stamps, TANF check, Medicaid, daycare and the complete benefit package that single and married parents receive. Having been a former recipient of services, Christine understood the complete system. The family's rent was based on household income and the number of family members. The format of this manual provides a complete program of training where everyone involved is held accountable for their training and for their attendance of the workshops. All barriers were removed to ensure that the parents could attend and carried the system in their communities. ii This manual gives supplies needed and resources for continued education in this area of child abuse and neglect. The development of this manual was created to inspire young parents to become social workers, case managers, or to become involved in their community in preventing child abuse and neglect. In viewing the prevention of child abuse and neglect, the family in this model is considered as unit captured holistically. Theparent(s), siblings, the system and the community all make up the social system. The system referred to here is the federal and state agencies(laws) Housing Urban Development (HUD) and Department of Social Services(DSS). T

The Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin (Hardcover, New): Kenneth S. Norris, Bernd Wursig, Randall S Wells, Melany Wursig The Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin (Hardcover, New)
Kenneth S. Norris, Bernd Wursig, Randall S Wells, Melany Wursig; Contributions by Shannon M. Brownlee, …
R2,142 Discovery Miles 21 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This absorbing book is the first comprehensive scientific natural history of a dolphin species ever written. From their research camp at Kealake'akua Bay in Hawaii, the authors followed a population of wild spinner dolphins for more than twenty years. They observed marked animals by ship, by air, from a cliffside observation post, by radiotracking their movements, and by studying the details of their underwater social life with the use of a windowed underwater vessel. Beginning with a description of the spinner dolphin species, including its morphology and systematics, the book examines the ocean environment and organization of dolphin populations and the way this school-based society of mammals uses shorelines for rest and instruction of the young. An analysis of the dolphins' reproductive patterns, which resemble those of other group-dwelling mammals such as certain primates, suggests a fission-fusion society. Vision, vocalization, hearing, breathing, feeding, predation, integration of the school, and school movement are all examined to give the fullest picture yet published of dolphin biological life. One of the most striking features of the species is the length of the period of juvenility and instruction of the young. The authors argue that dolphins may legitimately be called "cultural", and they turn in their conclusion to a comprehensive evolutionary analysis of this marine cultural system with its behavioral flexibility and high levels of cooperation. In a challenging new interpretation of how cultural organisms may evolve, they propose that spinner dolphin society be viewed as a set of nested levels of organization that influence one another by selectional biases. The resultingcooperative patterns support both the sociology and the cultural levels of organization, without being overridden by the supposed imperative of kin selection. Twenty years in the making by a renowned scientist and his associates, this absorbing book is the richest source available of new scientific insights about the lives of wild dolphins and how their societies evolved at sea.
