In this publication the sinologist Rupprecht Mayer presents 143 Chinese reverse glass paintings from a private collection in southern Germany. Traditional motifs of happiness, scenes from plays and novels, landscapes, Chi na's entrance into modernity, and the changing image of the Chinese woman define the central motifs. Production of reverse glass paintings began in Canton in the 18th century, of which only those that found their way to the West are known today. After th e end of exports in the middle of the 19th century this decorative art continued to enjoy popularity in China, but only very few of the many fragile paintings in Chinese households have survived the turmoil of wars and disruptions of the 19th and 20th cent uries. Reverse glass painting fell into oblivion in China, with no collections in museums and very few private collectors. This first study in the West presents the beauty of this traditional art in all of its facets.

This inventory catalogue presents reverse glass paintings offering outstanding documentation of the history of European reverse glass art from the 16th to the 19th century. The broad technical and artistic spectrum of this art form is shown, as well as its European significance. A documentation of all 153 newly acquired reverse paintings on glass from the internationally important private collection of Gisela and Prof. Wolfgang Steiner is also included. The catalogue section compares the works to their graphic templates. The publication also contains articles on the significance of reverse glass painting and the collecting profile of the world's largest private reverse glass art collection. Die Kunst der Hinterglasmalerei hatte ihre Blutezeit in den Jahren von 1550 bis 1850. In den kunsthandwerklichen Zentren - so unter anderem in Venetien, Tirol und Augsburg - entstanden damals zahlreiche Gemalde in dieser besonderen Technik, deren Vorlagen im Bereich der Druckgrafik zu finden sind. Wahrend Hinterglasmalerei heute oft mit naiver Volkskunst in Ver-bindung gebracht wird, ist weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten, dass sie in ihrer Hochzeit sehr qualitatvolle und von Kennern geschatzte Kunstwerke hervorgebracht hat, fur die hohe Preise bezahlt wurden. Ihre thematische Vielfalt reicht von religioesen Darstellungen uber mythologi-sche und allegorische Motive bis hin zu Genre, Portrat und Landschaftsmalerei. Der Band prasentiert weit uber 150 Hinterglasgemalde, die erstmals in direkter Gegenuberstel-lung mit ihren grafischen Vorlagen veroeffentlicht werden. Grossformatige farbige Abbildungen aller Hinterglasbilder und Vorlagen ermoeglichen, beide Kunste unmittelbar zu vergleichen.

Zar Peter der Grosse legte 1714 nahe St. Petersburg den Grundstein zu Schloss Peterhof, dem "russischen Versailles", das zwei Jahrhunderte lang als Sommerresidenz der Zaren diente. Wahrend die Schlossbauten im Zweiten Weltkrieg beinahe vollstandig zerstoert wurden und bis heute aufwendig rekonstruiert werden, gelang es, viele der Kunst- und Ausstattungsgegenstande des Palastkomplexes zu evakuieren. Der Katalog stellt mit zahlreichen Abbildungen und Textbeitragen die im Augsburger Schaezlerpalais erstmals in Deutschland gezeigte Auswahl von weit uber 100 original erhaltenen Objekten russischer und westeuropaischer Provenienz aus Schloss Peterhof vor. Sie umfasst samtliche Gattungen der Kunst und des Kunsthandwerks und spiegelt damit die hoefische Kunst und Wohnkultur des 18. Jahrhunderts.
