The USA PATRIOT Act, the actions and free speech of the Ku Klux Klan, and the use of privately owned devices with GPS by law enforcement are all highly controversial topics that fall under the blanket of civil liberties and federal or state authority—subjects that are important to most Americans. This book provides a comprehensive examination of arbitrary state action post-September 11, 2001, combining detailed examinations of specific legislation with watershed coverage of issues such as freedom of speech, press, and religion as well as various aspects of criminal law and procedure. This text presents documents from Britain, the American colonial period, the Founding period, and the modern era, including recent Supreme Court cases. Applying a diverse set of methodological strategies, the authors map the dividing lines in and between memory cultures across the globe, paying special attention to the impact the crisis-driven age of our present has on images of the past. Authors analysing educational media point to ambivalence, vagueness and contradictions in textbook narratives understood to be echoes of societal and academic controversies. Others focus on teachers and the history classroom, showing how unresolved political issues create tensions in history education. They render visible how teachers struggle to handle these challenges by pretending that what they do is 'just history'. The contributions to this book unveil how teachers, backgrounding the political inherent in all memory practices, often nourish the illusion that the history in which they are engaged is all about addressing the past with a reflexive and disciplined approach.

Die Grundungsvertrage Internationaler Organisationen unterliegen im Lauf der Zeit erheblichem Wandel, auch wenn ihr Wortlaut nicht geandert wird. With over 100 works from 20 years of interventions in urban space, the Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte in Dortmund has dedicated a large overview exhibition to René Schoemakers (*1972). From the very beginning, he has rejected any appropriation of the individual. As a direct reflex, examining the extremisms of the present has become central to his work, whether Christian or Islamic, left-wing autonomist or right-wing radical: the latter, however, in particular, since one of the attempted murders by the Nationalist Socialist Underground (NSU) in Dortmund was committed with the backing of a very active right-wing scene. Dieser bautechnischen Entwicklung entspricht die Tendenz der zeit- genossischen Architektur, plastische, durch das Studium der Formen erhaltene Losungen zu verwenden. Obschon sich das Interesse fiir die Verwendung von Flachentrag- werken auch im Stahlbau zeigt, riickt die Anwendung von Tragelemen- ten, deren Tragfahigkeit hauptsachlich in der Form der Mittelflache begriindet ist, bei den Konstruktionen aus Stahlbeton in immer ent- scheidenderer Weise in den Vordergrund. Mannigfaltig sind die Griinde fUr die zunehmende Verbreitung der Flachentragwerke, indessen liegt zweifellos einer der wichtigsten in der besseren Kenntnis, die wir heute von den Moglichkeiten haben, die sich durch diese Tragwerke ergeben, wobei diese Kenntnis die Frucht reif- licher Erfahrung und ausgiebiger theoretischer und experimenteller Untersuchungen ist. This work tracks an investigation in to the forces inherent in landscapes. An increased attentiveness to these can enhance design thinking and help design processes become more dynamic. Examples of landscape forces include dynamic systems such as ecosystems, and the mobile patterns that are deeply embedded in landscapes as a result of seasonality and diurnal change. These forces are patterns of organisation whose specific, locational qualities are investigated through my research by design. The purpose of this research, then, is to identify, unravel, and utilise the often overlooked and unseen forces operating in landscapes. My investigation is intended to allow for the elaboration of rich and intricate patterns of organisation in order to enable the deployment of these by landscape students and professionals. This involves thinking of landscape architecture as an operator and regulator of rhythmic moments occurring in the landscape, rather than as a tool with which to configure bounded terrains containing objects.

Die folgende Forschungsarbeit beschaftigt sich mit moglichen Einwirkungen auf Rundfunkfreiheit, im Speziellen durch die Finanzierungssituation des Medienunternehmens, als auch die Einflussnahme durch die Eigentumer. So ist es wichtig, auf welcher Rechtsform ein Medienunternehmen aufgebaut ist, da dies die Einflussnahme von bspw. der Politik betrachtlich steigern oder auch verringern kann. Ein Medienunternehmen, das finanziell von anderen Institutionen abhangig ist, kann oft nicht eigenstandig uber das eigene Programmangebot entscheiden. Ob das ein Nachteil oder Vorteil ist, soll in dieser Arbeit ebenfalls behandelt werden.
