In the modern era, sport has been an important agent, and symptom, of the political, cultural and commercial pressures for convergence and globalization. In this fascinating, inter-disciplinary study, leading international scholars explore the making of modern sport in Europe, illuminating sport and its cultural and economic impacts in the context of the supra-state formations and global markets that have re-shaped national and trans-national cultures in the later twentieth century. The book focuses on the emergence and expansion of media markets, high-performance sport's transformation by, and effects upon, Cold War dynamics and relations, and the implications of the Treaty of Rome for an emerging European identity in sport as in other areas (for example, the influence of soccer's governing body in Europe, UEFA, and its club and international competitions). It traces the connections between the forces of ideological division, economic growth, leisure consumption, European integration and the development of European sport, and examines the role of sport in the changing relationship between Europe and the US. Illuminating a key moment in global cultural history, this book is important reading for any student or scholar working in international studies, modern history or sport.

National Identity and Global Sports Events looks at the significance of international sporting events and why they generate enormous audiences worldwide. Focusing on the Olympic Games and the men's football (soccer) World Cup, the contributors examine the political, cultural, economic, and ideological influences that frame these events. Selected case studies include the 1936 Nazi Olympics in Berlin, the 1934 World Cup Finals in Italy, the unique case of the 1972 Munich Games, the transformative 1984 Games in Los Angeles, and the 2002 Asian World Cup Finals, among others. The case studies show how the Olympics and the World Cup Finals provide a basis for the articulation of entrenched and dominant political ideologies, encourage persisting senses of national identity, and act as barometers for the changing ideological climate of the modern and increasingly globalized contemporary world. Through rigorous scholarly analyses, the book's contributors help to illuminate the increasing significance of large-scale sporting events on the international stage.

Five films from the hugely popular sci-fi franchise. In 'The Fly' (1958), a scientist (David Hedison) is obsessed with developing a molecular matter transmitter. When he attempts to test the invention himself, he is unwittingly joined by a companion - a fly that has sneaked into the transportation pod with him. The consequences of the experiment soon become clear, as the scientist begins to take on fly-like characteristics. 'Return of the Fly' (1959) sees the original scientist's son reconstructing the matter transporter which turned his father into an insect, with the young man's experiments leading him down the same insectoid path. In 'Curse of the Fly' (1965) the plot again revolves around the Delambre family, although this time it is the scientist's grandson, Henri Delambre (Brian Donlevy), who becomes obsessed with transporter experiments to the dismay of his two sons, who want to live normal lives and forget about their grandfather's invention. Henri's oldest son, Martin (George Baker), marries a young woman who just escaped from a mental hospital. After Martin's new wife discovers a closet filled with deranged humans left over from failed teleportation experiments, the police are called and Henri attempts to flee using the infamous transporter. 'The Fly' (1986) is the Oscar-winning remake of the 1958 horror classic. Scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum), experimenting with transmitting matter uses himself as a guinea-pig, unaware that a fly has got into the machinery. As he embarks on a relationship with Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis), the journalist covering his project, his body slowly begins to take on fly-like characteristics. 'The Fly 2' (1989) is the sequel to the 1986 movie. Dr Seth Brundle is no more, but he has left behind a gruesome legacy: the teleportation device which transformed him into a human fly, and a son, Martin (Matthew Moore/Harley Cross). Infected with his father's insect metabolism, Martin's growth is hugely accelerated, and he is soon a fully grown man (Eric Stoltz). When he discovers the remains of his father's experiment, Martin decides to pick up where Seth left off.
In the Cold War era, the confrontation between capitalism and communism played out not only in military, diplomatic, and political contexts, but also in the realm of culture-and perhaps nowhere more so than the cultural phenomenon of sports, where the symbolic capital of athletic endeavor held up a mirror to the global contest for the sympathies of citizens worldwide. The Whole World Was Watching examines Cold War rivalries through the lens of sporting activities and competitions across Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the U.S. The essays in this volume consider sport as a vital sphere for understanding the complex geopolitics and cultural politics of the time, not just in terms of commerce and celebrity, but also with respect to shifting notions of race, class, and gender. Including contributions from an international lineup of historians, this volume suggests that the analysis of sport provides a valuable lens for understanding both how individuals experienced the Cold War in their daily lives, and how sports culture in turn influenced politics and diplomatic relations.
How did new literatures begin in the Middle Ages and what does it mean to ask about such beginnings? These are the questions this volume pursues across the regions and languages of medieval Europe, from Iceland, Scandinavia, and Iberia through Irish, Welsh, English, French, Dutch, Occitan, German, Italian, Czech, and Croatian to Medieval Greek and the East Slavonic of early Rus. Focusing on vernacular scripted cultures and their complicated relationships with the established literary cultures of Latin, Greek, and Church Slavonic, the volume's contributors describe the processes of emergence, consolidation, and institutionalization that make it possible to speak of a literary tradition in any given language. Moreover, by concentrating on beginnings, the volume avoids the pitfalls of viewing earlier phenomena through the lens of later, national developments; the result is a heightened sense of the historical contingency of categories of language, literature, and territory in the space we call 'Europe'.
Gain a practical prescription for both private and public organizations to remediate threats and maintain a competitive pace to lead and thrive in an ever-shifting environment. In today's hyper-connected, always-on era of pervasive mobility, cloud computing and intelligent connected devices, virtually every step we take, every transaction we initiate, and every interaction we have are supported in some way by this vast global infrastructure. This set of interconnected systems comprises the fundamental building blocks of the second economy - the very foundation of our first economy. And adversaries, whether motivated by profit, principle or province, are singularly focused on winning the race through a relentless portfolio of shifting attack vectors. Make no mistake about it, we are running a race. This is a race against a faceless, nameless adversary - one that dictates the starting line, the rules of the road, and what trophies are at stake. Established assumptions must be challenged, strategies must be revised, and long-held practices must be upended to run this race and effectively compete. The Second Economy highlights a second to none approach in this fight, as the effectiveness and ROI of security solutions are increasingly measured by the business outcomes they enable. What You Will Learn: Understand the value of time and trust in a cyber-warfare world Enable agile and intelligent organizations to minimize their risk of falling victim to the next attack Accelerate response time by adopting a holistic approach Eliminate friction across the threat defense lifecycle, from protection to detection to correction Gain a sustainable competitive advantage by seizing first mover advantage Deploy solutions across an open, integrated security framework Who This Book Is For: Senior-level IT decision makers concerned with ascribing business value to a robust security strategy. The book also addresses business decision makers who must be educated about the pervasive and growing cyber threatscape (including CXOs, board directors, and functional leaders) as well as general business employees to understand how they may become unwitting participants in a complex cyber war.
The view generally adopted in earlier German literary studies saw the 12th century as an undisputed age of ground-breaking innovation, whereas the 13th century was generally regarded as an age of 'decline', of political and literary 'downfall'. However, recent developments in literary theory and the history of tradition have increasingly queried this periodicity. In Germany there was in fact no appreciable upsurge of lay culture before 1170 and it was not until the 13th century that the vernacular found its way into almost all areas of literary communication. Foregrounding the innovative impetus of the 13th century over and against older periodicities was the aim of the Cambridge symposium. The papers given there are assembled in this volume.

'Found footage' horror film starring Ethan Hawke. Ellison (Hawke) is a true crime author, in search of a new story, who moves with his unsuspecting wife, Tracy (Juliet Rylance), and two young children into a house in which a horrifying quadruple murder recently took place. However, when Ellison opens a box of Super-8 film reels he finds in the attic, even the inquisitive author gets more than he had bargained for...
This Festschrift has been written by 26 friends, colleagues and former pupils to honour a medieval Germanist whose work has illuminated the linguistic and literary achievements and courtly culture of the classical Middle High German period with humour and elegance. His recently published history of the medieval BlA1/4tezeit (Golden Age), the monumental pinnacle of his contribution to the field, is set to remain a seminal work in this most important area for many years to come. The contributors to the Festschrift give their response to the works, authors and themes dealt with in Johnson's history. Central to the volume, therefore, are the great literary works which remained influential well beyond the Middle Ages and today enjoy a firm place within the canon of world literature: Walther von der Vogelweide's lyrics and Spruchdichtung, the Nibelungenlied, and the epics of Wolfram von Eschenbach.
This study picks up current debates about perspective and meaning in Wolfram von Eschenbach's AWillehalmA. Adapting Mika Bal's model of narratology, it concentrates on two major complexes - characters and narrator - which it treats as fluid, intersecting entities. The former, uniquely for German narrative genres of the period, emerge as three-dimensional characters whose voices converse with that of a subjective narrator moulded in an era of developing fictionality. The result is a narrative dynamic which represents a vibrant new literary hermeneutic for the vernacular.
Double bill of supernatural horrors. In 'Sinister' (2012) Ellison (Ethan Hawke) is a true crime author, in search of a new story, who moves with his unsuspecting wife, Tracy (Juliet Rylance), and two young children into a house in which a horrifying quadruple murder recently took place. However, when Ellison opens a box of Super-8 film reels he finds in the attic, even the inquisitive author gets more than he had bargained for. In the sequel 'Sinister 2' (2015) Courtney Collins (Shannyn Sossamon) moves with her nine-year-old twin sons (Robert Daniel and Dartanian Sloan) to a remote house full of unknown evils after fleeing from her abusive husband. As the family are terrorised by the soul-seeking Pagan spirit Bughuul, Deputy So and So (James Ransone) continues his investigation into the area's historical killings and tries to warn the family of his findings before it's too late...
Marc Price, Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne star in this horror. When he learns of the death of rock star Sammi Curr (Tony Fields), high school student Eddie Weinbauer (Price) is given one of his idol's records by local radio DJ Nuke (Simmons), who knew the heavy metal musician personally. But the spirit of Sammi lives on in the record and he uses the connection to order Eddie to carry out his bidding from beyond the grave. As his demands grow increasingly sinister and violent, Sammi is forced to break free and only Eddie can stop him from taking his revenge on the pupils of Lakeridge High School.
This book is my testimony. I pray that it will be a blessing to you. It will help you get delivered from you past. In this book you will see how God delivered me from my past experiences.
