Durs Grunbein is the most significant poet and essayist in German today. No other modern German poet has written from such an emphatically European and global perspective, and this volume seeks to present the poet and his work to the English-speaking world in all their significance and breadth. Written by a line-up of international scholars and critics, the volume offers highly readable and wide-ranging essays on Grunbein's substantial oeuvre, complemented by specially commissioned material and an interview with the poet. It covers the German and European traditions, and engages with Grunbein's works in the context of a number of relevant topics, such as 'memory', 'urban life', 'mortality', 'love', and 'presence'; it also probes Grunbein's sustained dialogue with the natural sciences and the visual arts.

The view generally adopted in earlier German literary studies saw the 12th century as an undisputed age of ground-breaking innovation, whereas the 13th century was generally regarded as an age of 'decline', of political and literary 'downfall'. However, recent developments in literary theory and the history of tradition have increasingly queried this periodicity. In Germany there was in fact no appreciable upsurge of lay culture before 1170 and it was not until the 13th century that the vernacular found its way into almost all areas of literary communication. Foregrounding the innovative impetus of the 13th century over and against older periodicities was the aim of the Cambridge symposium. The papers given there are assembled in this volume.

This study picks up current debates about perspective and meaning in Wolfram von Eschenbach's AWillehalmA. Adapting Mika Bal's model of narratology, it concentrates on two major complexes - characters and narrator - which it treats as fluid, intersecting entities. The former, uniquely for German narrative genres of the period, emerge as three-dimensional characters whose voices converse with that of a subjective narrator moulded in an era of developing fictionality. The result is a narrative dynamic which represents a vibrant new literary hermeneutic for the vernacular.

This Festschrift has been written by 26 friends, colleagues and former pupils to honour a medieval Germanist whose work has illuminated the linguistic and literary achievements and courtly culture of the classical Middle High German period with humour and elegance. His recently published history of the medieval BlA1/4tezeit (Golden Age), the monumental pinnacle of his contribution to the field, is set to remain a seminal work in this most important area for many years to come. The contributors to the Festschrift give their response to the works, authors and themes dealt with in Johnson's history.
