This book is focused on the impact of ocean transport logistics on global supply chains. It is the first book solely dedicated to the topic, linking the interaction of parties along this chain, including shippers, terminal operators and line carriers. While ocean container transport logistics has been greatly studied, there are many important issues that have yet to receive the attention they deserve. The editors and contributing authors of Ocean Container Transport Logistics: Making Global Supply Chain Effective seek to address these topics and shed new light on the subject. The book is divided into three parts. Part I examines the innovation, trends, competition and business model of container terminal operations. In Part II, the book looks at how tactical and operational management is used in shipping liners. The chapters cover topics such as empty container repositioning, slow steaming, routing, network design and disruption management. Finally Part III explores at shippers and global supply chain management, with chapters on transportation service procurement, hinterland transportation, green corridors, as well as competition and co-operation in maritime logistics operations. The eighteen chapters of the book all highlight the immediate effect of ocean transport logistics on global supply chain.
The rapidly developing new economies in China, India, Hungary, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, etc., are at the crossroads of almost all major supply chains. In fact, these emerging economies are growing faster than the established industrial economies of the world. However, given the physical, social and cultural characteristics of the emerging economies, managing supply chains there could be even more challenging than in developed economies. How can we manage supply chains well in emerging economies, coordinate information flows with multiple partners, tackle challenges such as unexpected disruptions, diversify the risks and increase flexibilities, be efficient but at the same time contribute to the social and environmental developments of these economies, and use supply chain concepts and practices to improve the economic welfare of these countries, such as basic infrastructure developments and disaster relief, are the topics and issues of the book. insights on the answers to the above questions and will enable practitioners to gain insights on the developments, challenges and opportunities when operating supply chains in emerging economies. Innovative approaches are outlined and illustrated with examples of real-world experiences by progressive companies and thought leaders. We also hope that this collection will stimulate researchers to gain deeper understanding and develop methods in operating supply chains in emerging economies. We have organized the book in three key sections. overall framework in managing global supply chains and developing strategies; Supply Chain Management in Emerging Economies: where 'Challenges and Opportunities' describes the challenges and opportunities in supply chain management of emerging economies - the infrastructure constraints, the logistics inefficiencies, and limitations in service operations, and discusses how to create opportunities in such adverse conditions; and, Building Supply Chain Excellence: where 'Innovations and Success Cases' is devoted to a number of industrial cases that showcase innovative approaches to gain excellence, and share insights and lessons from such experiences.
The purpose of Business Process Engineering: Advancing the State of the Art is to outline the structure of Business Process Engineering (BPE), its practices, methods, and theory for implementing successful organization restructuring. BPE is the design and implementation of efficient and effective business processes, and the corresponding alignment of enabling information technologies and systems. The editors have assembled the best research on BPE and recreated a structured volume that provides academic researchers and practitioners with a theoretical and practical framework for implementing specific BPE solutions for business and government. Hence, the book covers theoretical efforts towards the creation of new methods in BPE and practical issues that relate to its actual implementation in the real world of business and government. Due to growing concern about the competitiveness of industry in the international marketplace and the efficiency ofgovernment enterprises, widespread initiatives are currently underway to enhance thecompetitive posture offirms and to streamline government operations. Nearly all enterprises are engaged in assessing ways in which their productivity, product quality and operations can be improved. These efforts canbe described as Business Process Engineering (BPE). BPE had its roots in industry under differing titIes: Process Improvement, Process Simplification, Process Innovation, Reengineering, etc. It has matured to be an important ingredient of successful enterprises in the private and public sectors. After extensive exploitation by industrial and governmental practitioners and consultants, it is attracting increasing attention from academics in the fields of engineering and business.
