Why is the scale moving in the wrong direction even though I haven’t changed my diet or exercise habits? Time and again, this is the question Dr. Mary Claire Haver’s patients asked. At first, a practicing OB/GYN, she’d dutifully advise what she’d been taught in medical school: eat less and work out more. But that standard advice didn’t solve the problems caused by perimenopause and menopause because back then she—and so many other doctors—hadn’t taken into account the physiological factors affecting women. They tend to store fat, they can have a hard time accessing that stored fat as active fuel, and their hormonal fluctuations in midlife exacerbate the situation.

Then, Dr. Haver found herself in this exact predicament with the added issues of low energy, hot flashes, and brain fog. So she set out to develop a nutrition program that would meet her own and her patients’ needs once and for all. Now, more than 100,000 women have found success in Dr. Haver’s unique plan for losing dangerous belly fat and reducing menopausal symptoms by following her three interconnected strategies:

  • Fuel Refocus: Starting in their thirties, women need a specific ratio of healthy fats, lean protein, and quality carbohydrates to optimize their overall health and efficiently burn fat as fuel.
  • Intermittent Fasting: 16 hours of fasting with a flexible 8-hour eating window coaxes the body to draw energy from stored fat and decreases inflammation.
  • Anti-inflammatory Nutrition: Limit added sugars, processed carbs, chemical additives and preservatives and layer in anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, olive oil, berries, nuts, and tomatoes.

With these three principles working together, women can lose the weight they tend to gain in middle age as well as enjoy newfound energy, better sleep, less brain fog, and fewer hot flashes. Featuring forty delicious recipes, six weeks of easy-to-follow meal plans, shopping lists, and success stories of women who have changed their lives on this lifestyle plan, The Galveston Diet—named for Dr. Haver’s hometown—will revolutionize the conversation around health and empowerment during menopause and perimenopause, with health benefits that last a lifetime.

Successful societies can only be built on a realistic understanding of people and their world. The call for African solutions to the continent’s problems demands an innovative pool of knowledgeable and skilled social researchers. With this vision in mind, the sixth edition of Fundamentals of Social Research Methods: An African Perspective has been transformed to include a far broader set of research skills, compared to previous editions.

This edition covers qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research, and includes an extensive new section on the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data. The new edition therefore offers a solid and comprehensive foundation for the practice of social research. Fundamentals of Social Research Methods: An African Perspective draws examples from a broad spectrum of fields including agriculture, public health, social welfare, community development and regional planning.

The material is compatible with social science research methodology courses in anthropology, public health, sociology, economics, political science, psychology and education. The textbook is suitable for students and non-professional researchers who are interested in conducting social research, whether they are practitioners, community activists, government administrators, policymakers or businesspeople. The fifth edition of this textbook is developed for a modern audience. As authors we believe the world is a different place. Knowledge is available to almost everyone, and competitive social media is accessible to even people in remote areas. The book is still focused upon a wide range of professions such as social work, psychology, sociology, criminology, nursing, business studies and other social contexts such as community development and governments. The book is still intended to be a practical book, for novice researchers, as well as for more experienced researchers.

The authors recognise the growing role of generative artificial intelligence, large language models and machine learning that increasingly play a disruptive role in people’s ways of negotiating the world. Within this unstable and dynamic social world context, we still believe in solid textbooks that teach the fundamentals of social research in a practical and applied manner. Africa, like the rest of the world is no exception. With increased internet accessibility and the opening of learning abilities for all, the world has become a smaller place, and most people now have the potential to tap into the vast resources and tools for social science researchers. We trust that this text remains a fundamentally essential text for Africa, for general social researchers, and those who aspire to master the skills of research.

The present revision not only updates the material but also introduces substantial additions. We follow a simple, narrative and illustrative manner of describing highly abstract concepts, with real-world examples and case studies to assist us in transferring the essentials of social science research methodologies. In this sense, this is a local work and an indigenous way of knowledge transfer. The chapters end with questions and tasks to be answered by the reader, intended to reinforce learning. Many of the questions can be used for assessment purposes, all to increase the excitement of learning about social research. The authors are passionate about research and eager to make available and unlock the complexities of the philosophy of research. We trust the reader will enjoy this text and gain from the many examples, case studies and situations that pose challenges to everyday researchers.

Spinal Cord Injury Pain (Hardcover): Christine N. Sang, Claire E. Hulsebosch Spinal Cord Injury Pain (Hardcover)

R3,538 Discovery Miles 35 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Spinal Cord Injury Pain presents the basis for preclinical and clinical investigations, along with strategies for new approaches in the treatment of central neuropathic pain. Contributors from the private sector and academia provide a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art research in this challenging space. Topics include Epidemiology of Chronic Pain Following SCI, experimental models and mechanisms of chronic pain in SCI, and new targets and technologies. This book serves as a resource for continued translational research that will result in novel approaches and treatments that improve function and quality of life for individuals with CNP/SCI. Despite a better understanding of the complexity of mechanisms of CNP/SCI, improved medical and surgical management of SCI, and the subsequent acceleration of the identification of new targets and the development of novel analgesics, there is still a great unmet clinical need in the area of CNP following SCI. Hence, this book is a welcomed addition to current research and developments.

Scandals and Abstraction - Financial Fiction of the Long 1980s (Hardcover): Leigh Claire La Berge Scandals and Abstraction - Financial Fiction of the Long 1980s (Hardcover)
Leigh Claire La Berge
R2,726 Discovery Miles 27 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The greed, excess, and decadence of the long 1980s has been famously chronicled, critiqued, and satirized in epochal works like White Noise by Don DeLillo, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, and Tom Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities. Leigh Claire La Berge offers an in-depth study of these fictions alongside the key moments of financial history that inform them, contending that throughout the 1980s, novelists, journalists, and filmmakers began to reimagine the capitalist economy as one that was newly personal, masculine, and anxiety producing. The study's first half links the linguistic to the technological by exploring the arrival of ATMs and their ubiquity in postmodern American literature. In transformative readings of novels such as White Noise and American Psycho, La Berge traces how the ATM serves as a symbol of anxious isolation and the erosion of interpersonal communication. A subsequent chapter on Ellis' novel and Jane Smiley's Good Faith explores how male protagonists in each develop unique associations between money and masculinity. The second half of the monograph features chapters that attend to works-most notably Oliver Stone's Wall Street and Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities-that capture aspects of the arrogance and recklessness that led to the savings-and-loan crisis and the 1987 stock market crash. Concluding with a coda on the recent Occupy Wall Street Movement and four short stories written in its wake, Scandals and Abstraction demonstrates how economic forces continue to remain a powerful presence in today's fiction.

Palliative Care: A Practical Guide for the Health Professional - Finding Meaning and Purpose in Life and Death (Paperback):... Palliative Care: A Practical Guide for the Health Professional - Finding Meaning and Purpose in Life and Death (Paperback)
Kathryn Boog, Claire Tester
R1,049 Discovery Miles 10 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book encourages health professionals to reconceptualise their practice in the light of the fact that their patients are deteriorating and dying, supporting them in their dichotomous role which involves affirming that person's life whilst acknowledging that that life is ending. Professionals are encouraged to think laterally, to be creative in their use of their core skills, and to use their life skills and experience to change the focus of their interventions. By making these changes, those involved with caring for the dying will be able to address issues related to burnout and feeling de-skilled. The authors share their considerable experience with the reader - what works for both patient and carer/professional when working in this field. By providing workable solutions, they empower those in disempowering situations, such as when working with terminally ill children and adults. The book is truly holistic and client-centred in its approach, upholding the philosophy of palliative care. Aimed at all who interact with children and adults who have a life-limiting condition or who are dying Offers practical examples of approaches to dilemmas and emotional issues commonly face by those working in palliative care Encourages professionals to think laterally, to be creative in their use of core skills, and to use their life skills and experience to change the focus of their interventions Moves the emphasis away from the medical model to the emotional and spiritual influences on quality of life Offers clear, workable guidelines and demonstrates practical solutions, based on proven theory and experience, to problems encountered on a day-to-day basis by patients and those coming into contact with them

The strikingly unrestricted syntactic distribution of nouns in many Bantu languages often leads to proposals that syntactic case does not play an active role in the grammar of Bantu. This book offers a different conclusion that the basis of Zulu that Bantu languages have not only a system of structural case, but also a complex system of morphological case that is comparable to systems found in languages like Icelandic. By comparing the system of argument licensing found in Zulu to those found in more familiar languages, Halpert introduces a number of insights onto the organization of the grammar. First, while this book argues in favor of a case-licensing analysis of Zulu, it locates the positions where case is assigned lower in the clause than what is found in nominative-accusative languages. In addition, Zulu shows evidence that case and agreement are two distinct operations in the language, located on different heads and operating independently of each other. Despite these unfamiliarities, there is evidence that the timing relationships between operations mirror those found in other languages. Second, this book proposes a novel type of morphological case that serves to mask many structural licensing effects in Zulu; the effects of this case are unfamiliar, Halpert argues that its existence is expected given the current typological picture of case. Finally, this book explores the consequences of case and agreement as dissociated operations, showing that given this situation, other unusual properties of Bantu languages, such as hyper-raising, are a natural result. This exploration yields the conclusion that some of the more unusual properties of Bantu languages in fact result from small amounts of variation to deeply familiar syntactic principles such as case, agreement, and the EPP.

Children's Rights in Intercountry Adoption - A European Perspective (Paperback): Claire Fenton-Glynn Children's Rights in Intercountry Adoption - A European Perspective (Paperback)
Claire Fenton-Glynn
R2,069 Discovery Miles 20 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

European jurisdictions play a central role in intercountry adoption, both as countries of origin for children being placed, and as receiving countries. In 2010, 50 per cent of all children involved in intercountry adoption worldwide were sent to countries within Europe, while three European states - France, Spain and Italy - have been in the top five receiving states in the world for the past 15 years. In addition, of the approximately 30,000 children involved in intercountry adoption per year worldwide, around one-third come from European jurisdictions. The question that this book aims to answer is very simple: how can we best protect the rights of these children? Using the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption as the foundation for analysis, this book provides an examination of the application of children's rights in the field of intercountry adoption. It uses European jurisdictions as examples of both good and bad practice in order to illustrate the issues that arise in the practical implementation of these principles. In doing so, the book proposes normative guidelines within which intercountry adoption can be effected in a manner that protects the rights of children in Europe. This book argues that children involved in intercountry adoption should be afforded the same safeguards, the same protection, as children in domestic placements, in a system that focuses on the welfare of the child as the paramount consideration. The book covers in detail the following issues: - the place of intercountry adoption within the domestic system - the applicability of intercountry adoption as a child protection mechanism, and the impact it can have on other forms of alternative care - the conditions for parental consent to intercountry adoption; including the identity of those who must give consent, and how it can be dispensed with - the mechanisms used to prevent consent being obtained improperly, and to prevent the illegal trafficking of children - the participation of the adopted child in the decision-making process - the right of the child to obtain information concerning his or her biological parents - the eligibility of prospective adopters - the support necessary for a successful adoptive placement

The Psychoimmunology of Cancer (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Claire Lewis, Rosalind O'Brien, Jennifer Barraclough The Psychoimmunology of Cancer (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Claire Lewis, Rosalind O'Brien, Jennifer Barraclough
R7,014 Discovery Miles 70 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When the first edition of this book published in 1994, the psychoimmunology of cancer was still emerging as a topic for serious scientific study. Now, less than ten years later, there is a huge quantity of academic literature about the relationships between psychological variables, the immune system and cancer growth, accompanied by a lively popular interest.

In this new edition leading specialists have provided broad critical reviews of the different aspects. Part I, which presents the biological background, will be of particular interest to those with technical knowledge of the relevant laboratory based disciplines. It covers mechanisms mediating the effects of psychological status in the immune system, and anti-cancer mechanisms involving the immune system. Part II is clinically orientated, and accessible to a wide audience. Whether psychotherapeutic interventions can help patients live longer, as well as coping better, is obviously the key question and several contributors consider the clinical evidence for this. A new, speculative chapter on the spiritual context of immunity and cancer has also been added.

The psychoimmunology of cancer involves many complex issues, understanding of which remains far from complete. However, the contributors, besides reviewing the current state of knowledge and the implications for cancer patients, offer predictions for the future and ideas about further research.

From reviews of the first edition:

'The chief quality of this book is its presentation of an excellent but critical overview of the entire range of what is today called 'psychoimmunology', and it is to be recommended to all who are interested in the subject.' Annals of Oncology

Divine Flesh, Embodied Word - Incarnation as a Hermeneutical Key to a Feminist Theologian's Reading of Luce... Divine Flesh, Embodied Word - Incarnation as a Hermeneutical Key to a Feminist Theologian's Reading of Luce Irigaray's Work (Paperback)
Anne-Claire Mulder
R2,027 Discovery Miles 20 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What has Luce Irigaray's statement that women need a God to do with her thoughts on the relation between body and mind, or the sensible and the intelligible?
Using the theological notion 'incarnation' as a hermeneutical key, Anne-Claire Mulder brings together and illuminates the interrelations between these different themes in Luce Irigaray's work. Seesawing between Luce Irigaray's critique of philosophical discourse and her constructive philosophy, Mulder elucidates Irigaray's thoughts on the relations between 'becoming woman' and 'becoming divine'. She shows that Luce Irigaray's restaging of the relation between the sensible and the intelligible, between flesh and Word, is key to her reinterpretation of the relation between woman and God. In and through her interpretation of Luce Irigaray's thoughts on the flesh she argues that the relation between flesh and Word must be seen as a dialectical one, instead of as a dualistic relation. This means that 'incarnation' is no longer seen as a one-way process of Word becoming flesh, but as a continuing process of flesh becoming word and word becoming flesh. For all images and thoughts - including those of 'God' - are produced by the flesh, divine in its creativity inexhaustibility, in response to the touch of the other. And these images, thoughts, words in turn become embodied, by touching and moving the flesh of the subject.

Relabeling in Language Genesis (Hardcover): Claire Lefebvre Relabeling in Language Genesis (Hardcover)
Claire Lefebvre
R3,843 Discovery Miles 38 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Relabeling is a process that assigns a lexical entry of language-x a new label derived from a phonetic string drawn from language-y. This process plays a central role in the formation of contact languages such as mixed languages, pidgins and creoles, and New Englishes. In this book, Claire Lefebrve offers a coherent picture of research on relabeling over the last 15 years, and replies to the questions that have been directed at the relabeling-based theory of creole genesis presented in Lefebvre (1998) and related work. It addresses such questions as: how does relabeling apply across language contact situations and across lexicons, and what constraints act upon it? What other processes apply in language genesis and how do they interact with relabeling? Can a relabeling-based theory of creole genesis really account for all of the features that a theory of creole genesis must be able to account for?
Since relabeling applies to the lexical component of the grammar, different theories of the lexicon should make different predictions as to the nature of the lexical items to which the process can apply. Lefebvre discusses the predictions of a Construction Grammar framework and how they compare to those of the Principles and Parameters framework, and how each framework accounts for data. She analyzes how word order is established within a relabeling-based account of creole genesis, and the role that relabeling plays in accounting for the differences between creoles. Other topics discussed include the contribution of the superstrate language to a creole within a relabeling-based account of creole genesis, and the predictions of relabeling in terms of the typological classification of creoles. Lefebvre ultimately demonstrates how the relabeling-based theory of creole genesis constitutes a strong alternative to the Bioprogram Hypothesis.
