They wish to replace the primacy of meeting academic demands with meeting the needs and values of those outside the field who may benefit most from our work. They insist that we employ both rigorous scientific methods and an equally rigorous critique of those practices to ensure that our work addresses real-world social, environmental, and political problems. A transformed archaeology requires both personal engagement and a new toolkit. Thus, in addition to the theoretical grounding and case materials from around the world, each contributor offers a personal statement of their goals and an outline of collaborative methods that can be adopted by other archaeologists.

This book addresses the linear and nonlinear two-phase stability of the one-dimensional Two-Fluid Model (TFM) material waves and the numerical methods used to solve it. The TFM fluid dynamic stability is a problem that remains open since its inception more than forty years ago. The difficulty is formidable because it involves the combined challenges of two-phase topological structure and turbulence, both nonlinear phenomena. The one dimensional approach permits the separation of the former from the latter.The authors first analyze the kinematic and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities with the simplified one-dimensional Fixed-Flux Model (FFM). They then analyze the density wave instability with the well-known Drift-Flux Model. They demonstrate that the Fixed-Flux and Drift-Flux assumptions are two complementary TFM simplifications that address two-phase local and global linear instabilities separately. Furthermore, they demonstrate with a well-posed FFM and a DFM two cases of nonlinear two-phase behavior that are chaotic and Lyapunov stable. On the practical side, they also assess the regularization of an ill-posed one-dimensional TFM industrial code. Furthermore, the one-dimensional stability analyses are applied to obtain well-posed CFD TFMs that are either stable (RANS) or Lyapunov stable (URANS), with the focus on numerical convergence.

This updated translation from the original German edition provides general background information on oceanology and ocean engineering is given, along with descriptions of drilling techniques, offshore structures and hydrocarbon production at sea. The main part of the book is concerned with the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic analysis of marine structures, followed by an evaluation of marine structure reliability. Environmental conditions affecting marine structures, wave statistics, and the application of reliability theory to code development are also discussed. Studies on the colon not only serve medical interest or clinical purposes, but are also a highly interesting subject of comparative physiology, from which we can learn much about the basic principles in physiology. Presented here are examples of research on colonic ion transport of each vertebrate group, including the classical models of epithelia, rat and rabbit, and also on the special and unique features in fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and selected mammals such as the guinea pig. Physiology and pathophysiology of ion transport in the human large intestine are as well covered as the use of colonic cell cultures as model systems for crypt cell properties.
In January 1995, 300 participants from Asia, USA, and Europe lively discussed the "State of the Art and Future Aspects of CT" in Peking, China. The workshop was designed to cover all essential aspects of modern CT imaging including the historical development, different techniques, contrast agents, organ systems, and indications. The comparative evaluation of CT versus MRI and ultrasound was a central topic. Additionally, a special session was dedicated to "Angiography Tomorrow." This book summarizes the state of the art in both conventional and spiral CT imaging and provides some suggestions as for the future role of the method.

The translated material is a reviewed and updated version of the German text. Wheras the first volume concentrates on general and external factors, this one focuses on factors affecting the design and analysis of offshore structures themselves. Therefore it introduces students and practising engineers to the field of marine technology and, at the same time, serves as a reference book for experts. Offshore Structures, Vol. 2 is based on the authors' lectures and design practice in offshore structures and their components. Is it advisable to go back from bedside to the bench? During the last decade, few topics encountered such a broad interest in bio- gy and medicine as angiogenesis. The amazing ability of the body to restore blood flow by induction of blood vessel growth as part of an adaptive process has alarmed physicians dealing with diseases in which angiogenesis is either exaggerated (as in tumors) or too slow (as in ischemic diseases of heart and brain). Not surprisingly, pro- and antiangiogenic strategies have found their way into clinical trials. For instance, for the USA, the NIH website in early 2004 displayed 38 clinical studies involving either pro- or antiangiogenic th- apies. Given the expected overwhelming wealth of clinical data, the question may be asked whether further exploration of biological mechanisms is required or whether results from the bedside are instructive enough to proceed. This question depends also on the progress of pro- and antiangiogenic clinical trials. In the following, I give a short overview about some of the progress that has been made in this field. Since Judah Folkman proposed antiangiogenic tumor therapy thirty years ago, it has become increasingly evident that agents which interfere with blood vessel formation also block tumor progression. Accordingly, antiangiogenic therapy has gained much attention as a potential adjunct to conventional c- cer therapy.

In this small volume experts provide succinct answers to freuqently asked questions about the properties and handling of X-ray contrast media. It is an excellent reference source for all using these agents. Basic information is given on the development, toxicology, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and clinical testing of contrast agents and in question and answer form on the problems and adverse events which may be associated with them. Most of the book is concerned with the most frequently used iodinated X-ray agents but there are useful sections on the magnetic resonance and ultrasound echo enhancing agents which are assuming greater and increasing importance.
