When George Wilson is struck by the tragic death of his childhood sweetheart and fiancee, he set off on an odyssey, which leads him to North Africa. During his stay, he is duped into being a 'mule' and finds himself sentenced in Spain for drug smuggling. George is released from prison and in a very unsettled frame of mind, he enlists in the French Foreign Legion. During his service he is posted to Algeria during the period of the Algerian War of Independence. He becomes disillusioned over the ethics of the hostilities and his indecision of thoughts makes him sympathetic towards the Algerian Cause. Fate makes up his mind for him when an act of gallantry to an Algerian girl and her brother, leads him to taking up arms with the Algerian Freedom Fighters. His love for the Algerian girl becomes his driving force and together they are involved in many escapades, some of a dangerous nature. George is finally caught by the Foreign Legion military police and during an incident in which shots are fired. His time in detention proves that the pen can be mightier than the sword, and each, in their own manner, are unique.
Poodle-fakers and propagandists, zealots and harlots, tabloid reporters, all foregather under the cosily affluent canopy of the Chelsea Cluster, a low-rise enclave in the heart of SW10. How on earth can the Meddles, the Alis, the Ficklesteins and the Vishnus get along, with only low garden walls - and religious mania - to separate them? Enter Jezebel, the Cluster's very own Goddess of Love... First, Millicent Meddle succumbs to her soothing charms. Then it's the turn of Nigel, Millicent's not-so-Reverend husband. Pretty soon, the benign facade of Britannia Variegata, with all its splendidly pluralistic blooms, is crumbling. Mayhem ensues. Hilarious set piece comedy, zany characters, and an acute eye for the manners of London's 'comfortable' classes, give Divine Combat a cutting satirical edge. With all the lurid detail of a Bosch masterpiece, this novel will plant unforgettable images in your mind. Don't miss it!
