This book takes a strategic approach and provides a comprehensive review of books and papers about human resource management (HRM) and labor relations management in China, especially since China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001. In particular, the book evaluates the development of HRM under China's changing institutional environment, particularly since President Xi Jinping has taken dominant control of the Chinese Community Party (CCP) from 2010 onwards. This book provides a comprehensive examination of the many factors that influence the internationalisation of SMEs into China. SMEs represent more than 50 percent of the economic activity and employment in China. This book explores the experiences of SMEs that have internationalised to China from Australia. Australian SMEs are at the forefront of foreign SMEs in China with over 5000 Australian SMEs currently operating in China and a long history of association. The book is unique in that it presents a multidisciplinary perspective of the subject, considering seven different discipline perspectives (internationalisation, innovation, entrepreneurship, networks, resources, human resource management and barriers and liabilities). This makes the book one of the most comprehensive treatments of internationalisation to China so far. Each chapter in the book deals with a different perspective and includes own separate analysis. This book discusses the contextual factors such as cultural and institutional settings that impact on effective people management practices in Asia. The challenges of multinational companies (MNCs) in the particular areas of attraction and retention, training and career development of the local skilled labour workforce are analysed using the data of 529 MNCs in six Asian countries (namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand). The degree of challenges varies by country and sector. This book draws conclusions from the empirical research stating that cultural and institutional theories, as well as the convergence and divergence theses can explain at best, partially, reasons behind the different outcomes of people management or human resource management (HRM) practices across MNCs in different operations in the region.
