Openend Investment Fund (Paperback): D C Corner Openend Investment Fund (Paperback)
D C Corner
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With the entry of the United Kingdom into the European Economic Community on 1 January 1973, the opportunity presented itself for a study of open-end investment funds in the enlarged Community. The resulting book, which in a way is a natural sequel to the study Investment and Unit Trusts in Britain and America. (Elek: London, 1968), in which Dr Corner collaborated with Mr H. Burton, has been a long time in preparation, simply because of the sheer volume of statistical material- in particular, consistent sets of reports and accounts of all the EEC and Swiss investment funds - which has had to be collected. As a result, some of the analysis is based on what will inevitably be somewhat dated material at the time of publication. Unfortunately this is a handicap suffered by all such statistical work, unless one has large financial and manpower resources. We have done our best to update certain key statistics wherever this has been possible.

A Tale of Two Unions - The British Union and the European Union After Brexit (Paperback): Mark Corner A Tale of Two Unions - The British Union and the European Union After Brexit (Paperback)
Mark Corner
R822 Discovery Miles 8 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Brexit is a tale of two unions, not one: the British and the European unions. Their origins are different, but both struggle to maintain unity in diversity and both have to face the challenge of populism and claims of democratic deficit. Mark Corner suggests that the »four nations« that make up the UK can only survive as part of a single nation-state, if the country looks more sympathetically at the very European structures from which it has chosen to detach itself. This study addresses both academic and lay audiences interested in the current situation of the UK, particularly the strains raised by devolution and Brexit.

Signs of God - Miracles and their Interpretation (Paperback): Mark Corner Signs of God - Miracles and their Interpretation (Paperback)
Mark Corner
R465 Discovery Miles 4 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Signs of God reveals why discussion of the nature of miracles is of central rather than marginal importance where belief in God is concerned. Miracles cannot be shunted to one side as an embarrassing hangover from a 'pre-scientific age'. Miracles have played an important role in the history of all the major world religions, and many religious believers claim that they continue to do so. Yet they have also been criticized from a philosophical viewpoint as incompatible with a belief in laws of nature, and those who seek to have their religious beliefs properly attuned to the modern world often prefer to do without them. This accessible book examines the nature of miracles both in philosophical and historical terms, and concludes that, whether or not miracles happen, it is difficult to see how religious belief could survive without them.

International Media Research - A Critical Survey (Paperback, Revised): John R. Corner, Philip Schlesinger, Professor Philip R... International Media Research - A Critical Survey (Paperback, Revised)
John R. Corner, Philip Schlesinger, Professor Philip R Schlesinger, Roger Silverstone
R1,286 Discovery Miles 12 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This text offers a critical review of approaches and concerns that have recently defined the field of media research. The contributors to this volume analyze and reflect upon dominant themes and debates that have made media research an increasingly important element of political, social and cultural enquiry. Contributors drawn from the UK, USA, Canada and Belgium consider the relationships between media research and media policy in different national and international contexts. Focusing on the European Union, East-Central Europe, North America and Latin America, these chapters assess the impact of social, economic and political circumstances on policy debates and the shaping of a research agenda. The final chapter adopts a trans-atlantic perspective in tracing and analyzing the history of the medias role in reporting war. This survey firmly places media research in the wider context of political and social change and its analysis, and provides a defining but also questioning perspective on its achievements.

R4,595 Discovery Miles 45 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

International Media Research offers a rigorous and critical review of key approaches and concerns that have recently defined the field of media research. The contributors to this volume analyse and reflect upon dominant themes and debates that have made media research an increasingly important element of political, social and cultural enquiry. The book opens with an introduction which surveys the current state of the field, and continues with a critical evaluation of the work of the leading media scholar, Elihu Katz. It goes on to explore the relationship between media studies and adjacent fields: cultural studies and new work on gender and sexuality. Enterprise and Heritage - Crosscurrents of National Culture (Paperback, New): John Corner, Sylvia Harvey Enterprise and Heritage - Crosscurrents of National Culture (Paperback, New)
John Corner, Sylvia Harvey
R1,209 Discovery Miles 12 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The phenomena of `enterprise' and `heritage' might at first thought seem unrelated: this book sets out to show that the two concepts are not only related but deeply interdependent. If `enterprise' can be used to define the official encouragement of the values of the market society, then the growth of the heritage industry can be seen as a manifestation of the entrepreneurial spirit - marketing the past so that it is accessible to the man or woman in the street.
Using case studies, commentary and critique, the contributors to this lively volume discuss the importance of `enterprise' and `heritage' in British social and cultural life, with examples drawn from film, television, literature, urban planning, architecture, government advertising, information technology and tourism.

Summer of Caprice (Paperback): Vladislav Vancura Summer of Caprice (Paperback)
Vladislav Vancura; Translated by Mark Corner
R283 Discovery Miles 2 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Summer of Caprice, a captivating comic novel first published in 1926, is a classic of Czech literature, yet it is little known elsewhere. Commonly considered untranslatable due to the complexities of the text, which is characterized by a playful narrative and an exceptional mastery of language, and its profound cultural context, it is rendered here in English that beautifully captures Vladislav Vancura's experimental style or, as the author himself called it, his "poetism in prose." Mixing the archaic with the innovative, raw colloquialisms with biblical quotations, Summer of Caprice opens an uproarious window onto the Czech spirit, humor, and way of life.

We Were a Handful (Paperback, Classroom Ed.): Karel Polacek We Were a Handful (Paperback, Classroom Ed.)
Karel Polacek; Translated by Mark Corner
R289 Discovery Miles 2 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A favorite work of Czech humor, We Were a Handful depicts the adventures of five boys from a small Czech town through the diary of Petr Bajza, the grocer's son. Written by Karel Polacek at the height of World War II before his deportation to Auschwitz in 1944, this book draws on the happier years of Polacek's own childhood as inspiration. As we look upon the world through Petr's eyes, we, too, marvel at the incomprehensible world of grownups; join in fights between gangs of neighborhood kids; and laugh at the charming language of boys, a major source of the book's humor. This translation at last offers English-language readers the opportunity to share in Petr's (and Polacek's) childhood and reminds us that joy and laughter are possible even in the darkest times.

Talking Climate - From Research to Practice in Public Engagement (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017):... Talking Climate - From Research to Practice in Public Engagement (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Adam Corner, Jamie Clarke
R2,183 Discovery Miles 21 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes a fresh approach to climate change communication: five core principles for public engagement that can propel climate change discourse out of the margins and into the mainstream. The question of how to communicate about climate change, and build public engagement in high-consuming, carbon-intensive Western nations, has occupied researchers, practitioners, and campaigners for more than two decades. During this time, limited progress has been made. Socially and culturally, climate change remains the preserve of a committed but narrow band of activists. Public engagement is stuck in second gear. By spanning the full width of the space between primary academic research and campaign strategies, this book will be relevant for academics, educators, campaigners, communicators and practitioners.
